How to Make Your Scholarship Application Competitive
Essay writing is a process. Use multiple drafts. Ask advisors, friends, writing center, to help edit.
Use excellent grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, content, etc. Be unique and highlight your talents, accomplishments, hopes, dreams,
goalsBe realistic, thoughtful, meaningful, genuine, reflectiveConnect the essay to a bigger picture idea Explain how the experience will impact your life
Using Student Loans to Fund Study Abroad
Students often use loans to cover some or all of their study abroad costs.
A loan is borrowed money students need to pay back, with interest Federal student loans require students and/or parents to complete
the FAFSA Non-governmental loans or private bank student loans are an
option too. Different interest rates than government loans. Talk with your Financial Aid Office about these options.
Budgeting
In addition to the Program Fee, you need to budget for: Food & Fun money – what can
your lifestyle or budget afford? College tuition is an additional
cost, except for Taiwan program General personal expenses: local
transportation, laundry, food, SIM card (phone), books, etc.
Talk with your family about what’s possible or within your limits
General Budget Expectations for a student traveler: Plan for what you need to spend. Food is an essential need. $300-500 a
month. Plan for what you might want to do. Plan for the unexpected. Some experiences might only be a once
in a lifetime opportunity.
Apply to Study Abroad @ GRC Need a valid passport
Must be 17 years old by the time you go. 18 years old for the Spain program.
Need to complete the application – email program staff, get the online application or
visit your International Programs office
Need 2 Letters of Recommendation (one from a professor/teacher)
Must submit an unofficial copy of transcript
Write a 1 page essay – describe the reasons you would like to study aboard, and
what you hope to accomplish on your adventure, and how you can use the experience
in your academic or career plans
