For the first half of this week’s studio, we again focused on the various building details of each of our sites that were given to us. We were asked to label each detail on various sections (full sheet included in appendix).

In the second half of this week’s studio we were able to re-visit the Oval Pavilion site, in order to see how the building works at this site have progressed since the beginning of the semester.

To the left we can see a photo of a particular section of the Oval Pavilion construction site taken in week 3 of this semester. At this stage of works the builders were in the process of installing the floor system of the main building, including the drainage channels, the water proof membranes and the concrete slabs on the very top.

On the right we can see a picture of the same section of the Oval Pavilion construction site as it is at the present moment, taken in the week 10 site visit. Here it can be seen that the project has progressed quite far, in that there is now a clear framework structure on top of the initial floor system, as well as the beginnings of some of the cladding and veneers and also of the roof system.

Constructing Environments - Sem2

- Much of the external structure is being made with off-form concrete.- Parts are also being constructed as a block work wall, with a reinforcing bar placed every 400 or so blocks.- Wing on top of roof (as can be seen in top left photo) is most likely the skylight as well as being used as ventilation.

- Extra insulation and support has had to be added to the roof system of the structure, therefore making the roof now roughly 35mm higher than specified in the plans.- Particularly for the lower floor sections and the roof builders are now waterproofing each surface before installing insulation

- As can be seen from the picture here to the left, the plan of the Oval Pavilion also includes an indoor/outdoor fireplace.- This fireplace includes timber cladding that is joined together using a tongue and groove joint.

- Much of the framework in the main section of the Oval Pavilion project consists of steel beams with timber columns (as can be seen from the bottom right picture).- For the ceiling, much of the cross braces are rod braces which take any movement from the roof and ceiling under tension.- As well as this, Z purlins are used so they are able to overlap across the roof/ceiling beams.

- The structure is required to have drainage lines throughout the building process as well as for the future (once the building is complete), which can be seen in the picture to the left.- Behind the drainage lines is a 200mm retaining wall, designed to keep out any water or land mass and stop it from infiltrating and creating faults in the finalised structure.

- For the walls, the usual bracing system is in the form of a fixed brace which must be welded on (as can be seen from the picture to the left).- LVL timber is used as this is termite proof due to the glue used to stick each peel of timber together, as well as the fact that this process makes the wood stronger than regular timber.
