The Gospel:Not According to Man

CHAPTER

11

Introductory ThoughtsIntroductory Thoughts

• Paul’s battle with the Judaizers– Denied that Paul was an apostle– Denied that Paul’s preaching was the

gospel

• This necessitated repeated defenses of self and office– Acts 9:26-27; 15:1-2– 2 Corinthians 11:26-27– 1 Corinthians 9:1-2– Philippians 3:2-3

Acts 9:26 - 27Acts 9:26 - 27

And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.

Acts 15:1 - 2Acts 15:1 - 2

And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2 Therefore, when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders, about this question.

2 Corinthians 11:26 - 272 Corinthians 11:26 - 27

In journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 27 in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

1 Corinthians 9:1 - 21 Corinthians 9:1 - 2

Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? 2 If I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

Philippians 3:2 - 3Philippians 3:2 - 3

Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation! 3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Paul’s Preaching Not According to Men

Paul’s Preaching Not According to Men

• What He Preached was By Revelation– Our Text: Galatians 1:11-12– Romans 16:25-27; Ephesians 3:2-5

Romans 16:25 - 27Romans 16:25 - 27

Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began 26 but now made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for obedience to the faith— 27 to God, alone wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.

Ephesians 3:2 - 5Ephesians 3:2 - 5

If indeed you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which was given to me for you, 3 how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, 4 by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 5 which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets.

Paul’s Preaching Not According to Men

Paul’s Preaching Not According to Men

• What He Preached was By Revelation– Our Text: Galatians 1:11-12– Romans 16:25-27; Ephesians 3:2-5

• Paul was chosen by God to be an apostle to the Gentiles– Our Text: Galatians 1:15-19– Acts 9:15-16; 22:14-15– 1 Corinthians 15:8-11

Acts 9:15 - 16Acts 9:15 - 16

But the Lord said to him [Ananias], “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.”

Acts 22: 14 - 15Acts 22: 14 - 15

Then he [Ananias] said, ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth. 15 For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.

1 Corinthians 15:8 - 111 Corinthians 15:8 - 11

Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 11 Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

Our Preaching is Not to be According to Men

Our Preaching is Not to be According to Men

• Unfortunately, too many are quickly attracted by false gospels– Our Text: Galatians 1:6-7– Ephesians 4:14-15– 2 Timothy 4:2-4

Ephesians 4:14 - 15Ephesians 4:14 - 15

That we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head — Christ.

Paul’s stated purpose for gifts, and offices in the church

2 Timothy 4:2 - 42 Timothy 4:2 - 4

Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

• Unfortunately, too many are quickly attracted by false gospels– Our Text: Galatians 1:6-7– Ephesians 4:14-15– 2 Timothy 4:2-4

• To preach something other than truth is to bring about condemnation– Our Text: Galatians 1:8-9– Jude 3– 2 John 9-11

Jude 3Jude 3

Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

We must contend for truth, because error condemns!

2 John 9 - 112 John 9 - 11

Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

Concluding Thoughts

Concluding Thoughts

• The Word of God is complete, and revelation is finished

• God gave the apostles, and inspired men of the Bible, to supply for us what is needed for salvation (The Gospel)

• We must respect God’s Word. Teach it. Contend for it. Study it. Trust in it alone. Obey it.
