Examsuccess

In 2014, progress measures soaredhigher than ever before and in allsubjects large numbers of studentsreceived a final grade higher thanexpected based on past performance.The GCSE results in 2013 were ourbest ever in terms of the progressstudents made when measuredagainst similar students in otherschools across the country. This year,our students have performed as wellas those record breakers, with Maths,English Literature and the Humanitiessubjects recording particularly highprogress across all ability groups.

This resulted in more than 1,000 A* or A grades being awarded and61% of our GCSE students achievingan A* or A grade. Our core subjects of Maths, English and Science areamongst the highest performing in the school. In Science, A* and Agrades have increased across all three subjects and in English, thenumbers of students makingexceptional progress has risen which has seen the number of A* and A grades rise. Maths also hadanother exceptional year and haveproduced another outstanding set of results.

There were some outstandingindividual performances with 35students receiving 10 or more A* andA grades and some students making5 levels of progress in their subjects.

Our results give you a real indication of the enjoyment andpassion our students develop for the subjects they studyand every year we are proud to celebrate our students’achievements as they receive their GCSE results.

TheHouse System

Each house has its own distinctivecharacter which captures what it means tobe a member of the South Hunsleycommunity. We hope that all students feelproud to belong to their house and willstrive for the best, not only for themselvesbut also for their fellow house members.

We also have a new rewards structurewhich aims to encourage teamwork and toensure all students aspire to achieve as fullyrounded young people, both inside andoutside school. A wide range of eventstake place throughout the school year topromote community spirit and healthycompetition between the houses.

As the school grows in size,our priority is for all studentsto continue accessing highquality pastoral care andsupport. Our six new housesensure students feel part of asmaller group in a growingschool community.

Each house has twomembers of staffjointly leading it: a Head of House and a House Leader.The roles have two distinct areas of responsibility; the Head of House is availablethroughout the day as the firstpoint of call for parents, and the House Leader deals with the monitoring of students’academic progress. Any studentwho has problems or concerns,whether academic or pastoral, can access the help and support they need.

Over the last ten years, we have made a significant investment in our buildingsto ensure we can deliver a first classlearning experience which will equip our students with the skills required forwork in the 21st Century.

Our community sports centre ensuresstudents have access to some of thebest school sporting facilities in the East Riding. We have well equippedcomputer rooms and WiFi accessacross the site, a modern Media Music Suite with state of the artrecording and filming equipment and our most recent developmenthas seen a new languages block built with eight classrooms, including a computer room.

At leasteighteen different sports areoffered to students and nearly350 fixtures are played eachyear, as well as our termlyInterform competitions. We alsoorganise a Festival of Sporteach year to aid the transitionfrom Year 6 to Year 7.

> ClubsWe have a real variety of lunchtime and after school activities and clubs to give our students the freedom toexplore their interests beyond theclassroom whilst remaining in afriendly, supportive and familiarenvironment. Astronomy Club,Journalism Club, Creative Writing andLego Club are just some examples ofwhat students can take part in.

Throughout the school year we runpersonal development days and apersonal development week toprovide students with differentlearning experiences and toencourage independence, self-confidence and teamwork. Studentshave the chance to take part inenrichment activities, workshops andtrips, and in previous years these haveincluded a Robotics workshop,wheelchair basketball and ‘Prison Me! No-Way’ events.

Wider Opportunitiesand Extra CurricularActivitiesWe are proud of the wide range of schoolopportunities our students enjoy. Wewant all students to flourish during theirtime with us and we feel that theirexperiences outside the classroom arejust as important and support bothacademic and personal development tohelp our students thrive as individuals.

> Creative ArtsStudents can join a number of different musicalgroups including orchestra, wind band and choirs andeach year there are several musical events rangingfrom workshops to Christmas and Summer concerts.Drama Club and the Star Shakespeare Company arealso popular and help students develop and improvetheir performing skills. They take part in theShakespeare Schools Festival every year and performto an audience at Hull Truck Theatre.

“Erin WhincupYear 9 student

I visited my great greatGrandfather’s grave and itwas heart breaking.Visiting his grave was suchan inspiration to me andthe rest of the group as itrepresented the braveryand resilience of all thosewho fought in the war. Ifeel really fortunate to havevisited the battlefields.

We offer a wide range offoreign and UK tripsincluding languageexchanges, sport and ski trips and othereducational visits tosupport the curriculum.

Two of our most popular overseas trips arerun by our History and Languagesdepartments. The annual battlefields trip toFrance and Belgium is a memorableexperience for our Year 9 students, providingthem with the chance to see first hand whatthey have learnt in the classroom.

The languages trip to Paris has also meant our Year 10 students experiencedFrench culture and customs to support their GCSE studies.

Students can also take part in sports toursboth abroad and in the UK. These toursenable students to participate in tournamentsand build on teamwork skills in a fun andexciting environment. Recent examples ofthese have taken place in Holland, Wales and Shropshire.

We also run countless educational visits to awide variety of places here in the UK such asmuseums, art exhibitions, theatres and theever popular residential trip to Ribblesdale forour Year 8 students.

Our learning support teams deliver a range ofinterventions including: literacy and numeracybooster groups, in class support, supportedreading programmes, dyslexia programmes, the Successmaker programme for comprehensionand spelling support and social skills work.

For students with a physical or sensory disability,specialist toilet and shower facilities, sound proofingand the laying of non-slip surfaces all help usmaintain our excellent record of integrating andsupporting students with physical or sensory needs.

We provide ramps, adjustable furniture and subjectspecialist equipment to support wheelchair users

We offer a range of interventions and adaptations toensure every student’s individual needs are takeninto consideration and appropriately catered for.

Applications for admission to South Hunsley Schoolfor students with special needs are assessedcarefully to ensure we have the necessary facilitiesand support in place to be able to deliver a highquality programme for the student concerned.

This assessment process is carried out inconjunction with parents or carers and anyappropriate external agencies who are involved with the student. Wherever possible, we try to make reasonable adjustments to ensure the besteducational experience possible. 

The primary aim of our inclusion services is towork closely with students, parents and staff tofacilitate personalised programmes of supportand create an enjoyable and successfuleducational experience. 

We have specialist staff working across this areato ensure that the needs of every child are met. Our support ranges from help with organisationand life skills to literacy and numeracy skills toalternative curriculum arrangements for giftedand talented students who need a differenttimetable to pursue their specific interest. 

We also have access to a wide variety ofprofessional agencies outside school and athorough understanding of the specialist support and guidance available.

The inclusion and pastoral teams work togetherto ensure every student receives the right level ofsupport and that their academic and personalprogress is regularly reviewed so that they cangrow and flourish as individuals.

Sixth Form College

Students have a wide variety of courses to choose from and we continue to offer a varied and challenging curriculum to stretch our students and help them develop the skills that they will require for success in later life.

In the sixth form, we know that our students are getting closer to realising their ambitions and we continue to provide specialistsubject staff and focus on inclusion and pastoral support toensure that every student has the brightest future possible.

We encourage all of our sixth form students to develop intoindependent and enquiring learners with clear goals and a will to succeed and we remain very proud of the wide range of achievements of both current and former students.

South Hunsley has a thriving sixth form and the vast majority of ourschool students choose to continue their Post 16 education with us.
