WANDONG PRIMARY SCHOOL IS PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY

Wallan & Kilmore Community Bank® branches

Dear Families

Covid 19 - What are we pondering?

With the restrictions we have in place at the moment our normal activities cannot continue as normal. At this

stage camps and excursions have been cancelled. Alterations may occur later in the year but we don’t want

to plan any changes before we know when restrictions are to be lifted. Please ensure you are reading our

updates on Compass as well as the newsletter, so you are aware of what is happening at Wandong. We are

still creating scenarios for how we will be managing reports, as well as our planned Three Way Conferences

at the end of this term. This will obviously be in line with DET advice and this will be communicated to you as

we know more. We have also just been advised that the student Attitudes to School Survey will now proceed

in Term Three, rather than Term Two, in a modified format.

Reminder – Social Media Policy

On our official Facebook Page and our closed Facebook Group, you will see our Social Media policy pinned

to the top. In our current climate with so much happening online and people communicating on different

platforms more than ever, it’s important to acknowledge and understand what it means to be part of our

Wandong Primary School community and our obligations. It is important as a society that we hold the same

ethical standards in social networking as we do face to face. The age old saying goes, “If you wouldn’t say it

to their face, don’t write it down”. Some points to note:

Be mindful that, by posting your comments and having online conversations etc. on social media sites

you are broadcasting/publishing to the world. Even with the strictest or maximum privacy settings be

aware that comments expressed via social networking pages under the impression of a ‘private

conversation’ may still end up being shared into a more public domain

If you come across positive or negative remarks about the school and/ or its operations online that you

believe are important, you may pass those posts to the schools leadership team who will consider such

comments on a case by case basis.

The Department of Education and Training have also published “Social Media and Your School”. This

document outlines expectations around being a positive role model by demonstrating respectful and

responsible behaviour when communicating with and about your child’s school online. Before you post

something online about your child’s school ask yourself:

Is this information helpful and positive?

Will this information upset or embarrass the school community or an individual?

This document can be found at the below address. Remember that our school has a wonderful reputation

and our staff work tirelessly to ensure that their professional reputation is also of good standing and it is

important to ensure that our staff are supported in their work and content online does not diminish that. https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/about/programs/bullystoppers/parentsocialmediaschoolcommunity.pdf

Remote and Flexible Learning – have you taken the pressure down?

We do understand that it may be difficult for families to balance their own work commitments with the

supervision of their children and wanted to remind everyone that although Victoria has commenced remote

learning for Term Two, we do consider that learning to be flexible. This means that a child does not have to

log onto their computer at 9:00am for a regular school day. It is entirely up to each family how and when they

will engage in the learning content. We do ask that you maintain communications with the school but

understand that family dynamics vary and what is successful for one group will not work for others. Take this

time to get to know what works for you and implement a program that is manageable. We all understand that

planning for remote learning is very different to what and how our staff do this when in a ‘normal’ setting at

school. We are also acutely aware that we are not going to be able to hit the mark with every single family

and the learning for every single student in this environment, as hard and as much we try and would dearly

love to. As teachers, this is our heartfelt desire and this struggle is real for our teachers every single day.

Thank you again for your support and recognition of this. We are altering our practice each week as we learn

more. We thank you for the feedback that allows us to improve.
