Greetings Storm Students and Families!

On behalf of our staff and administrative team, it is my pleasure to share with you what a positive and

encouraging group of students we have here at Squalicum High School! We feel that we have had a great

start to the school year and that has been possible because of how well your students have conducted and

committed themselves to a positive school year. Our students continue to be respectful, courteous and

engaged – which is vital to our school culture and important in their ability to do well here at Squalicum.

Whenever I have a group of parents in front of me, I mention our desire – as a school – to partner with

parents when it comes to behavior and academic issues. It is no secret that grades mean different things to

different people. For us, grades are a way to measure content learning and communicate a level of

understanding of the content back to students and families through their measured progress. To do that

well, parents need some assurances. Please know I’ve requested all teachers to update grades frequently. If

you aren’t seeing grades updated regularly and wonder about progress for any one class, please contact

your students’ teacher(s).

October 4th marks the last day for the first 6 weeks of this school year. We will share progress grades for all

9th grade students the following week via School Messenger (or by mail if we don’t have your email address)

and alert parents of 10-12 grade students who are struggling academically. You do not need to wait for our

progress reporting, however. Please reach out to any teacher if you have questions or wonder about how

grades are being calculated and reported.

Finally, you should know that Homecoming Week is fast approaching! We look forward to huge participa-

tion in our activities and athletic events, as well as the dress up days and lunchtime competitions. We’ll start

things off with our Homecoming Kick-Off Assembly next Friday, October 6th at 10:00am.

Storm Pride is State Wide!

Sincerely,

James Everett, Principal

“SUPER WEDNESDAY”

OCTOBER 11

We are looking forward to Super Wednesday on October 11! It will be filled with career and college preparation activities for all students and grade lev-els.

• Grade 9 students will spend the first hour at SQHS engaged in team and culture

building activities followed by a trip up to Western Washington University. At WWU’s Performing Arts Center, Bellingham Superintendent Greg Baker and Nick Sanchez, Director of Equity and Diversity at WWU, will speak to our students about creating more inclusive learning spaces within our classrooms, campuses, and com-munities. Students will get the opportunity to know each other better and build re-lationships, while developing tolerance, acceptance and increased understanding that we share more similarities than differences. Please have your student return his/her permission slip if they have not yet done so. Students will not be able to attend if they do not have a permission slip.

• All students in grade 10 will take the Pre-ACT (Pre American College Test). This

is a free opportunity for students to gauge their readiness for the coming ACT exam they may choose to take for college entrance.

• All students in grade 11 will take the PSAT (Pre Scholastic Aptitude Test). This is

also a free opportunity to prepare for the SAT exams they may begin taking in the Spring.

• Grade 12 students will have an event-filled morning, with Jostens hosting a

presentation and the opportunity for Seniors to be fitted and place their order for

graduation supplies including caps and gowns. The group picture for the Senior

Class will occur this morning and also conference-style sessions to attend regarding

career and college preparation.

“Family” y seleccione “Health Information”.

15 September Hitch-Hikers

As we welcome back students, sometimes they have less-than-welcome hitch-hikers coming along with

them. Head lice show up on students more often after a long break like summer vacation. This is because

they spread from head to head contact during play or sleep-overs which happen more often in the summer

time. Then they first get noticed in the classroom when students are sitting still and being observed as they

do their classroom tasks.

About head lice:

Anyone with clean or dirty hair can get head lice.

Head lice are common and live on a head for about month before the itching starts, usually the first sign

that gets them noticed. Chances of transferring them to another person are not any higher just

because of discovery. An itchy scalp may continue after treatment.

It is less likely for head lice to be passed between students during school time because of the precau-

tions in place to reduce this possibility. Studies indicate that most (about 90%) head lice cases

originate somewhere other than at school.

Head lice need to feed frequently and cannot live long if they fall off a head.

They do not hop, jump or fly. They can only crawl, and have unique curved feet for grasping hairs. They

cannot stick or climb up smooth surfaces like other insects.

Nits (eggs) are laid within ¼” of the scalp and will hatch in about 7 days. Lice treatment products help

kill and remove lice but you still must physically remove lice and nits by combing or picking them out.

Nits on hairs that fall off can’t hatch as the warmth of the scalp is needed.

What you can do:

Check your child about once a month for signs of lice or nits in the hair.

Teach them not to share hats, scarves, or hair items and to avoid head-to-head contact.

Long hair can be braided or pulled back to reduce accidently brushing against others.

If you find head lice or are notified that your child is suspected of having them, do not panic. They do

not carry disease and there are effective ways to get rid of this pest.

What we do if head lice are suspected on a student:

Parents/Guardians of the student are called and treatment options are discussed. The student will be

reminded not to share hair items or have head to head contact and can go home as usual at the end

of the day. They should be treated that evening and can return to school the next day, once treated.

In most situations, a student will not need to be absent because of head lice.

For communication purposes, if a classroom has two or more students with infestations, other parents

at that grade level will be notified that head lice have been an identified at school. Identities of

students are never disclosed in this notification.

If your family is having difficulty getting rid of head lice, or cost of treatment is a problem, please contact

your school nurse for help and support.

For more information on how to treat, please see visit the school’s website. Click on the Family’s tab and

scroll down to health information. More information about head lice and treatment can also be found

on the website at www.cdc.gov/lice .
