    Dear First-Round Finalists:

    The Pacifichem 2010 Organizing Committee and the Scientific Program Subcommitteeonce again extend congratulations to all of you on being selected as the 240 First-RoundFinalists of the Student Poster Competition. As already announced, the OrganizingCommittee now invites you to the Special Poster Session, your final step to the StudentPoster Award, to be held as part of Pacifichem 2010 in Honolulu.

    This is the final notice of the Special Poster Session, and the First-Round Finalists arekindly requested to follow and observe the important information and instructions givenbelow.

    SPECIAL POSTER SESSIONDate and Time: Thursday, December 16, 2010

    12:00 Noon 14:00 (2:00 PM)

    Venue: Kamehameha Exhibition Hall II,Level 1, Hawaiian Convention Center[http://www.hawaiiconvention.com/index.cfm?page=space]

    [IMPORTANT]Registration: 11:30 AM; the Operations Office of the Student Poster Competition,

    Kamehameha Exhibition Hall III (next to Kamehameha Hall II)Please visit the Operations Office for check-in with:Your poster (the same one displayed in your regular poster session);Pacifichem 2010 Admission Badge (your nametag);Photo ID (passport, driver's license, etc.)

    Preparation: A SHORT ORAL SUMMARY (5 minutes or shorter)that summarizes the essence of your poster to be orally presentedto official Judges at the Special Poster Session.

    We suggest you carefully prepare this oral summary BEFOREcoming to Honolulu.

    A. RegistrationAs indicated above, First-Round Finalists are requested to come to the Operations Officeat the Kamehameha Exhibition Hall III (next to the Kamehameha Hall II, the venue of theSpecial Poster Session) in the Convention Center at 11:30 AM, Thursday, December 16,2010 for registration to the Special Poster Session, with their Pacifichem Admission

    Badge and photo ID (passport, driver's license, etc.) for identification.After registration, presenters will mount their posters onto the poster boards designatedwith the poster ID.

    Pins, adhesive tapes, and other stationary items will be available at the OperationsOffice.

    [IMPORTANT]Under no circumstance will someone other than yourself be allowed to present yourposter at the Special Poster Session.

    First-Round Finalists who do not register by 1:30 PM (13:30), Thursday, December 16,2010 will be disqualified from the Student Poster Competition.

    B. Selection Rate (Final Selection)Approximately 40 Final Award Winners will be selected from the 240 First-RoundFinalists (ca. one winner per six First-Round Finalists), in proportion to the total numberof initial applications per Topical Area.

    C. Selection ProceduresFinal Award Winners will be selected during the Special Poster Session. Each posterwill be attended by TWO Judges (identified by special nametags) who will separately visitthe poster and independently evaluate it.

    The presenters (First-Round Finalists) will be requested to first present a short ORALSUMMARY (< 5 min; see above), followed by a DISCUSSION with the two Judges.Each Judge's visit will be ~10 minutes. The presenters will therefore be required torepeat the short presentation to each of the two Judges.

    All discussion should be in English, regardless of the mother tongues of students andJudges. No intervention or attendance of the presenting students mentor(s) orsupervisor(s) is allowed.

    When the poster presentation to the two Judges has been completed, the students maydismount posters and are required to REPORT their leave to the Operations Office.

    D. Selection CriteriaOn the basis of the best and fair judgment of two independent Judges, posters will beevaluated and graded (full score: 20 points) in accordance with the following weightedcriteria:

    a) Poster Quality(0-4 points)Is the poster well organized?Is the material clearly presented?Is the disclosure complete?

    b) Significance of the Reported Work(0-6 points)

    Does the work address a clearly stated objective(s)?Does the work represent a clear advance in research?Is the work of sufficient originality and merit to warrant publication?

    c) Students Understanding of the Work(0-6 points)Is the student able to deliver a concise oral summary of the work?Is the student knowledgeable of the background and the methodology used?Is the student able to discuss future steps or implications of the work?

    d) Students Enthusiasm(0-4 points)Is the student enthusiastic and passionate about the work?Does the student conduct him- or herself professionally?

    In these criteria, therefore, considerable emphasis is placed not only on the quality ofresearch but the enthusiasm, understanding, and positive commitment of presentingstudents.

    E. Announcement of Final Award WinnersAt approximately 5 PM (17:00), Final Award Winners (names and poster ID #) areofficially announced to public via:

    a) A poster in front of Kamehameha Hall II in the Hawaiian Convention Center;b) A poster in front of the Pacifichem Operations Office in the Convention Center;c) The Pacifichem 2010 official website;

    d) E-mail to all the First-Round Finalists.

    F. Regular Poster SessionAll the First-Round Finalists are expected to participate in the Regular Poster Sessionbefore or after the Special Poster Session, also to be held in the Kamehameha ExibitionHalls II and III. Please double-check the schedule of the Regular Poster Session.
