Field Supervisor Availability

Just because a school district appears on the drop down list does not mean we have a field supervisor available

during the quarter you want to student teach.

Placement

Step OneThe Field Supervisor submits the student teacher’s application materials to the student teacher’s preferred school districts indicated on the application.

Step TwoThe school districts send out a district-wide email asking for experienced teachers to volunteer to be a cooperating (mentor) teacher.

Step ThreeThe school district waits to see if any teachers step forward to take on a student teacher.

Note: If no teacher is willing to serve as a cooperating (mentor) teacher, there is nothing more either the school district or the university can do.

Step FourThe Field Supervisor submits the student teacher’s application materials to the second and third choice school districts, and the process begins all over again.

Placement  Step FiveYou will hear from your Field Supervisor when your Field Supervisor hears from a school district about a possible placement.  Step SixYOU contact the CT IMMEDIATELY to arrange to interview with the teacher. The building Principal may also want to interview you. Note: This is an interview…just like a job interview. Dress and act appropriately. This is your chance to secure a student teaching placement. DO NOT leave the interview without a confirmation that you can do your student teaching with that teacher. Step SevenYOU contact your Field Supervisor immediately after the interview to confirm that you have been accepted as a student teacher at the school.

Placement

Important Information: Some school districts leave student teacher placement up to the individual schools. This

means that the Field Supervisor must contact each individual school to see if they are interested in taking on a student teacher. This is extremely time-consuming.

If you do not hear from your Field Supervisor, do not assume that he/she is not working on your placement. It simply means that there is no news to share with you about your placement. You will hear from your Field Supervisor just as soon as he/she hears from a school district.

DO NOT bother your Field Supervisor with complaining emails or phone calls. It does not speed the process. In fact, it slows the process. If the Field Supervisor has to answer numerous emails and phone calls, he/she cannot devote his/her time and attention to your placement.

Your Field Supervisor is supervising a full load of student teachers and securing Field Experience placements at the same time that he/she is trying to place you for student teaching. It is not uncommon for a Field Supervisor to be handling 30 to 70 different placements at the same time. Your understanding is appreciated as your Field Supervisor handles countless phone numbers, names, messages, emails and so forth.

“Pulling”

A student teacher can be “pulled” out of Student Teaching for a variety of reasons:

Poor scores or ratings on an evaluation. Overall attitude. Lack of professionalism. Principal request to remove student teacher. CT request to remove student teacher.

Quotes from CTs

“You are no longer the center of the universe. The world does not revolve around you.”

(2nd Grade Teacher, Bellevue SD)

“Teaching is all about the kids. It’s not about you.”

(Middle School Teacher, Seattle SD)

“If we want to know your opinion, we’ll ask. Everybody has an opinion. A wise teacher

knows when to share it… and when to shut up!”

(Principal, Seattle SD)
