Personal Learning The individual learner Students learn to seek and use feedback from their teachers to develop their content knowledge and understanding.

Discipline-basedLearning

English Understand that the meaning of sentences can be enriched(ACELA1493)

InterdisciplinaryLearning

Thinking Processes Creativity Standards define what students should know and be able to do at different levels and are written for each dimension. In Thinking Processes, standards for assessing and reporting on student achievement apply from Level 3.

Children’s Prior Learning (what do the children already know/what have they covered?)The students know what an opener, adjectives, connective words and what wow word are, as they have previous lessons’ on each of these elements of writing. In term one the students practiced basic sentenced, using three part sentences, transforming them into more interesting sentences using why? When? Where? How?

Teaching Skill Development (What do you want to develop as a teacher?)Present to students in class through power-point. Students choose from 3 basic middle-part sentences to construct and write their sentence.Students have visual cues around the room and through power-point. By educating through simple and precise English language and terminologies I can help guide the students through the process of writing an exciting sentence.

Session StructureLesson PhaseOrientation /Introduction

How best to motivate and explain the importance of this lesson? This should be for about 5 minutes with links to prior learning or experiences.

By capturing on the students previous individual lessons on openers, adjectives, connectives and wow words.Giving the students the middle part of the sentence and asking them to 1st put an opener. 2nd an adjective, 3rd a connective and 4th a wow word the students will write a powerful sentence.

Teaching strategy/Learning Activities

What will support the students to learn the concepts you are trying to teach and to reach the learning outcomes? How will you cater for a diversity of learning needs?

The visual cues and step by step guidance. Students that have more difficulty will need more one on one for extra guidance.

Conclusion /Closure

How will you capture the main ideas of the lesson? Recap/revision etc.

Students will share their sentences as a group and can share different elements of their writing techniques.

Assessment Strategies

What are the assessment strategies used throughout this lesson? These should be closely aligned to your lesson aims. How you will you record student learning outcomes?

Introduction to the lesson 7.5

The lesson started with students on mat looking at the power-point and writing on whiteboard leveling up a sentence.

Planning & organisation of materials, resources

8.5There was adequate planning; maybe too much information and planning as I changed one page on the power-point and did not need to use my terminology sheets.

Communication with students; explanation, questioning skills etc.                                                  9

I asked the students to tell me what openers, adjectives, connectives and wow words were. They gave me the definition and examples and with the whole class the students helped write on the whiteboard a sentence up-leveling the sentence each time. When they went back to their desks they wrote their own sentence of a spider climbing up the wall. I made sure to explain several times what was expected of their writing task and helped the students individually in the classroom.

Selection of learning tasks 9

Good materials for learning task.

Monitoring/assessment of student learning throughout the lesson                                                 9

The students had the visuals of the power-point and different slides were shown at different processes of writing. I walked around the room individually helping the students and imposing questions or explanations to the whole class when needed.

Conclusion of lesson; transition to next lesson                                                        10

The next lesson was the student’s big write which my mentor teacher took. Mrs Davis referred to different writing processes and elements of my lesson to teach her lesson.

ReflectionWhat was good about this lesson? Why?The lesson helped to recapture different writing elements the students have learnt this year. It was good to start the lesson on the floor as a group and the powerpoint gave the students the visuals they needed. It was a help to talk about the different writing elements and then allowing the students to all contribute to up-leveling their first sentence:Basic Sentence - The boy ran Excitedly the boy ran [Opener] Excitedly the enormous boy ran [Adjective] Excitedly the enormous boy ran last because he was over-weight [Connective] Excitedly the lofty boy ran last because he was over-weight but he was ecstatic he finished [Wow word]

How might this lesson have been improved? There were times I had to think my own knowledge as some of the students gave me “LY” words that did not exist. My own confidence in teaching needs to improve, however, saying this! My confidence from today’s lesson was a lot better than yesterday. Lesson went for 40minutes and some students had an extra 15 minutes to complete one sentence

What did you learn about teaching and learning (students’ and your own) from this lesson?I learnt I can really educate students if I have the right pedagogy learning strategies and tool. I was learning as I was teaching the students. As a teacher I learnt I need to know thoroughly what I teach the students. Planning and knowing how I want to teach the lesson makes for a smooth learning lesson.
