IS THE PROBLEMWITH THIS?

Teens feel Marijuana is “safe” because it’s a plant.

Teens filling Poland Springs bottles with Vodka.

Alcohol is more accepted by parents then smoking pot

“Weed isn’t as harmful as cigarettes”‐you only hear about people dying from them, not weed!

“It’s not hard to get anything around here.”

“There is a big difference between drinking to get drunk & drinking socially. Half the kids drink to get drunk, the other half as part of a game or to just chill.”

What Do You Think?

• Feel like nothing bad is going to happen to them– Ignorance/invincible– Home life-no boundaries– “They get away with it”– Parents have no control/not respected

• Adults say no – So lets do it anyway– Control – “When a parent tell s you not to do it, you feel like

this is my life and my body and you want control over it”

• They think it’s what they are supposed to be doing at this age, because everyone else does it– “It’s part of growing up”

THINGS THAT

Page 25: Student Survey PowerPoint

• Small “focus groups” with speaker– Not a large assembly (feel like a lecture)

– Anonymous & confidential

• Something bad will have to happen to someone.

• Need someone NOT connected to the school where we can voice concerns.

• Conversations between parents & child regarding dangers/consequences of alcohol & drug use– Maybe a contract?
