SUMMERSRP CHECKLIST
UNITERRA SYMPOSIA SERIES CONSUMING ETHICALLY FOR WORLD SYSTEMS THAT WORK BETTER FOR PEOPLE & THE PLANET
Ethical consumption is critical in a world struggling to sustain its population and an environment unable to cope with our current consumption behaviors. Though we are members of a global economy and international market systems, we often do not think about how our consumption choices are connected to the world’s most vulnerable populations. Let’s change this for our #OneWorld.
BRINGING THE REST OF CANADA INTO THE DISCUSSION
Bring together international development experts, young entrepreneurs, leaders, and local organizations to discuss the diverse perspectives on what it means to consume ethically now and for the future. Dig deep into the role of youth and the range of approaches to stimulate ethical consumption. Encourage consumers in Canada to think critically about their choices and even produce some recommendations informed by your discussion.
ONE WORLDOur world faces increasingly urgent and interconnected challenges that affect us all through our environment and economies, and the most vulnerable are disproportionately affected. As consumers in one of the world’s largest economies, we are in a unique position to drive global change through our individual and collective consumption choices. What a chance to improve our #OneWorld.
PUTTING OUR PURCHASING POWER TO GOOD USE
WUSC Local Committees have taken inspiring initiative to promote ethical consumption choices in their communities and on their campuses for nearly a decade. It’s time to take it to the next level! While remembering that every consumption choice we make in Canada can improve the lives of others and the state of our environment, let’s engage academic and business experts from here and abroad, youth leaders and Uniterra volunteers and partners to examine what it means to consume ethically.

Girls in refugee camps are expected to help with domestic chores and sibling care, limiting their opportunity to go to school. Most of them don’t get to finish primary school, let alone high school. In many secondary school classrooms, boys outnumber girls 4:1.
PUT A SPOTLIGHT ON GIRLS’ ACCESS TO EDUCATION AND YOUNG WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP.
Help us raise funds so we can continue with our goal of supporting refugee girls’ education, while talking about the obstacles girls around the world face in pursuing school. With your support, young girls in refugee camps can continue to study and gain the self-confidence they need to succeed!
STUDENTS WITHOUT BORDERS®
Students Without Borders® offers Canadians studying or recently graduated from Canadian universities, CEGEPs, and colleges the opportunity to volunteer overseas and contribute to sustainable development projects with partner organizations across Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
SWB volunteers are provided with a tangible learning experience as they support organizations in developing countries. Qualified students work overseas for 3 to 12 months where they can apply theoretical concepts to real work environments.
Apply for Winter 2017 placements before Sept 25, 2016Apply for Summer 2017 placements before Jan 29, 2017
INTERNATIONAL SEMINARConnecting youth across regions of the world to collaborate on an impact-driven research project linked to the work of local organizations in Africa, Latin America or Asia, the Uniterra International Seminar is an incredible overseas volunteer opportunity. For 65+ years, it has offered Canadian students and young professionals a cross-cultural learning opportunity, and contributed to valuable applied research.
HOW CAN TOURISM CONTRIBUTE TO MORE SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES AND AN INCLUSIVE ECONOMY?
The Summer 2017 International Seminar will be held in Bolivia! Together, student-leaders from Canada and Bolivia will explore the ways in which tourism can influence the sustainable and inclusive development of the economy and communities. Participants will work with actors like local businesses, organizations, government and academic institutions as they reflect on the intersection of these areas, and the ways in which they foster the development.

Since 1978, WUSC Local Committees have sponsored student refugees to resettle in Canada and pursue their higher education at safe and supportive Canadian universities, CEGEPs, and colleges. WUSC is the only organization in the world that combines resettlement with post-secondary education. This unique sponsorship model includes vital social, academic, and financial support for at least 12 months upon arrival in Canada.
FROM CAMP TO CAMPUS, THE #SRPCHANGESLIVES
The SRP changes lives of refugee youth and students involved in this unique youth-to-youth sponsorship program. The program also offers students in Canada a chance to learn about issues such as forced migration and develop valuable cross-cultural and leadership skills as they support these newcomer students to their campus. To this end, WUSC provides training and support to Local Committees, facilitates overseas selection, and prepares SRP students for immigration.
