3. Main Idea
With a new nation they needed a leader and a government. Washington was elected and took a bold step to form the government we have today.
4. Important People
Alexander Hamilton-
Was secretary of thetreasury. He also was the one planning for a national bank.
Thomas Jefferson-
Secretary of state.
Henry Knox-
Severed as Washington's general ofartillery during the revolution.
Edmund Randolph-
Attorney general, the chief lawyer if the federal government.
*These people were part of the cabinet for the president.
5. Important events
George Washington was chosen as the first president of the united states. He and his man had a long task to endure, create an entirely new government.
He based the government on the will of the people.
The judiciary act of 1789 was one of his first tasks, which allowed the state court to make federal decisions when issues were raised. Washington also shaped an executive branch to help him make policies and pass them by law afterwards.
Hamilton & Jefferson had different perspectives. Hamilton wanted a strong government, educated and elite upper class citizens. While Jefferson wanted a strong state and local government rooted in popular participation.
In 1790, the debt bill passed congress. Hamilton and Jefferson divided the cabinet which split into democratic- republicans and federalist.

Edmond Gent- Young diplomat that the French sent to America to win support.
Thomas Pinckney- U.S. minister to Great Britain.
Little Turtle- Chieftain of the Miami Tribe.
John Jay- The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
8. Important Events
Pinckneys Treaty of 1795- Treaty between Spain and Great Britain over claims of land and shipping rights in America.
XYZ Affair- 1797 incident in which French officials demanded a bribe from U.S. diplomats.
Alien & Sedition Acts- A series of four laws enacted in 1798 to reduce the political power of recent immigrants to the United States.
9. Section 3 Jefferson Alters the Nations CourseMain idea
The united states expanded its borders during Thomas Jefferson's administration.
15 states now occupy the territory. Jefferson acquired in the Louisiana purchase .
10. Important People
John Marshall- staunch federalist, chief justice of the supreme court.
William Marburry- midnight Judge who never got his official papers.
James Madison- Jefferson's secretary of state, whos duty was to deliver the papers
Lewis & Clark- were explorers sent byJefferson who was eager for them to explore the new territory which was an expeditionfrom St. Louis to the pacific coast.
Sacajawea- the native woman who served Lewis & Clark as an interpreter & guide.
11. Important Events
The presidential campaign was between Thomas Jefferson & John Adams.Thomas Jefferson won and also wrote the declaration of independence. Jefferson wanted peace to his opponents. So in order to do that he made things even by replacing some federalist officials with democratic- republicans. By 1803 it was more evenly balanced. The united states then expanded west.
12. Section 4 The War of 1812Main Idea
America and Britain were having a lot of controversy. This ending by them going into war.
13. Important Events
Jefferson passed the Embargo Act of 1807. He believed it would hurt Britain and other European powers. Also, believed that they would honor American neutrality. Ended up hurting America more then Britain, and in 1809 congress lifted the ban on the foreign trade.
When it was discovered that the Native American confederacy was using arms from British Canada, the war hawks called for war against Britain. War Hawks were a group of young congressman from the South.
14. Important People
General William Henry Harrison- He was governor of the Indiana Territory. He invited several Native American chiefs to persuade them to sign away 3 million acres of tribal land to the U.S government.He also burned the Shawnee Capitol.
Andrew Jackson- He gained national fame from winning a series of battles.
