One Waterloo Includes You!

The One Waterloo Campaign is an amazing program that brings attention to the many diverse communities and people at UW. The One Waterloo Campaign envisions a campus where our differences are not only identified but celebrated. Each member of the Waterloo community has the ability to express, explore, and discover who they are. Every member of the UW community is recognized as a person whom has something to contribute to the university. Everyone has the right to learn and succeed academically, and deserves an environment that is inclusive and supportive of whom they are.

Winter 2010 provides UW with several key initiatives from the One Waterloo Campaign.February is Black History Month. There will be opportunities to explore the culture, art, history, and experience of Black people in North America and around the world. There will be panel discussions and performances which will educate, question, and inspire. This year’s Black History Month theme is “Aspire to Inspire” representing the differences that you can make within your community.

International Celebrations Week (March 8-14) is One Waterloo’s most popular program. Students, clubs, and societies from different cultures come out and celebrate through performances, food, and information sessions. Food Services create special international cuisine throughout the week. The heart of International Celebrations Week is Cultural Caravan, where hundreds of students pack the Great Hall of the Student Life Centre to experience the amazing cultural talents of UW students.

For these programs to be a success, One Waterloo needs your support. There are many volunteer opportunities within One Waterloo. If you are interested in planning events, helping with promotions, or running events then please contact Johnny [email protected] for more information on volunteer opportunities.

Safety tips for Students

The University of Waterloo is a large community. Waterloo strives to be an open and welcoming environment that supports all the members of UW. That said, with all communities as large as Waterloo, there are some practices that students should adopt to support their safety and those of their peers on campus. These include: traveling in pairs or groups at night, always letting someone know if you are traveling somewhere alone, avoiding dark paths and isolated travel routes in the evening, follow major roads at night, or well lit paths instead. There is also the UW Shuttle Service which runs 7 nights a week from 7 pm – 2am. They can be contacted at (519) 888 – 4949 ext. 84949.For more information visit: http://police.uwaterloo.ca/safety-resources/.If you have experienced any violation of your own safety, you are encouraged to contact the UW services here to support you – your information is kept confidential. For more information on what services are available to you visit: www.studentlife.uwaterloo.ca.

Interested in working, studying, or volunteering abroad? As a University of Waterloo student you now have access to the Big Guide to Living and Working Overseas, an online guide for all of your international experience needs!

Adapted from the popular print book by the same name, the Big Guide Online is divided into five sections for building international career skills:

1. Your International IQ: Learn the skills for succeeding abroad

2. Acquiring International Experience: Uncover study, volunteer, intern, and travel abroad programs

3. The International Job Search: Learn the difference between a domestic and international job search

4. The Professions: Prepare for international jobs in every field

5. International Career Directories: Find employers who regularly hire for jobs abroad

The Big Guide Online is an interactive website that includes a powerful "My Guide” section where you can set up a “My Learning Path” profile based on your global career goals. The "My Learning Path" feature indicates relevant resources for your interests and also lets you create bookmarks, notes, and an inventory of your international skills.

Additional features of the Big Guide Online include quick links to volunteer opportunities, international job boards, and country guides.

To access the guide, you need to sign up for an account by providing your Waterloo email address. You will be emailed an activation link to get started.

To find out more about the Big Guide to Living and Working Overseas and how it can help you toenhance your international skill set, search for international work and research international organizations, attend the “The Big Guide” workshop organized by Career Services on Thursday January 28th from 12:30 to 1:30 in TC 1208.

I’M GOING GLOBAL!

by Leah Marshall, ERS Co-op

I am planning on completing the Global Experience Certificate to supplement my Environment and Resource Honours Co-op Degree. I have had the privilege to travel to various parts of the world and recognize the importance of being a global citizen. I feel that adding the GEC to my ERS degree will allow me to put my environmental knowledge to work in degraded areas worldwide.

My GEC plan includes:

• EARTH 122 & EARTH 122L - Introductory Environmental Sciences (Global Studies Requirement)

FR 151 – Basic French 1 (Language Requirement)

FR 152 – Basic French 2 (Language Requirement)

• Volunteering with the SHADOW program at the International Students Office on campus. I have volunteered here for two terms and plan to continue throughout my time at Waterloo. The SHADOW program is designed to help international students transition into life at Waterloo. I highly recommend it as an option if you enjoy learning about new cultures, countries and making new friends. (Cross-Cultural Experience Requirement )

Check out http://www.iso.uwaterloo.ca/about_iso/volunteer/shadow_volunteer.htm for more info! (The ISO English Tutor Program is another great volunteer opportunity!)

• Academic exchange to Murdoch University, Australia (International ExperienceRequirement). In January 2010 I will be leaving Waterloo to undertake a 5-month study term down under. I plan to extend my time abroad by completing an international work-term in New Zealand or Australia.

Get more exchange info at: http://www.research.uwaterloo.ca/international/exchange.htmlThe international experience is an expensive, but very important component of the GEC. Waterloo recognizes this and provides a wealth of resources to help fund your invaluable experience! For more information on available awards visit: http://safa.uwaterloo.ca/scholarships/currentawards.html#international

Overall, the GEC is a valuable addition to any degree if you wish to pursue a career with any international aspect!
