The initiative is anchored on the idea that as learners, the children have a first-hand experience and grasp on the way they learn, feel, and act inside and outside the classroom, and they can better explain this process to their parents with the help of the portfolio binder. As they anticipate this one on one meeting, the students are also able to reflect more on their own progress. During the conference, the students were able to share their achievements, strengths, frustrations and failures as well as their plans on how they are going to maintain or improve their current learning status. In return, the parents had a deeper understanding of how their children do in school, and how these students strive to make their parents and the school proud. The parents also saw the true meaning of the portfolio binder – it is not just a collection of the students’ quizzes and a showcase of artistic ability – it reflects the effort that the children exerted in the process of learning. Both the parents and the students felt a deeper connection as they saw beyond what meets the eye. In his Facebook post, Sir AC commended the students for the successful conference. “Your school is very proud of how you responded to the challenge of discussing your learning journey and growth for the First Term. We hope that through this experience, you are able to realize your strengths and areas for improvement so that you can plan better and be able to maintain or improve your performance in the succeeding terms.” (Read about a sophomore’s reflection about Student-Led Conference on p. 2)

STUDENT-LED CONFERENCE CONNECTSLEARNERS AND PARENTS

October 7, 2016 markedanother milestone in SSIS with thefirst Student-Led Conference.

The initiative is anchoredon the idea that as learners, thechi ldren have a fi rst-handexperience and grasp on the waythey learn, feel, and act inside andoutside the classroom, and theycan better explain this process totheir parents with the help of theportfolio binder. As they anticipatethis one on one meeting, thestudents are also able to reflectmore on their own progress.

During the conference, thestudents were able to share theirachievements, strengths, frustrations and failures as well astheir plans on how they are goingto maintain or improve theircurrent learning status. In return, the parents had a deeperunderstanding of how theirchildren do in school, and howthese students strive to make theirparents and the school proud.

The parents also saw thetrue meaning of the portfoliobinder – it is not just a collection ofthe students’ quizzes and a showcase of artistic ability – it reflects the effort that thechildren exerted in the process of learning. Both the parents and the students felt adeeper connection as they saw beyond what meets the eye.

In his Facebook post, Sir AC commended the students for the successfulconference. “Your school is very proud of how you responded to the challenge ofdiscussing your learning journey and growth for the First Term. YOUNG KNIGHTS MAKE A NAME IN INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE COMPETITION

Grade School Knights etched their names in the pillars of international science competition. In the recent International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) Science competition, two students

got Distinction awards while three students got Credit Award for acing the examination. For newbies in the field of international science challenge, the students made a remarkable performance

worthy of praise and emulation. On top of that, these students are also making waves in the areas of English andMath.

Hats off to the kids and their Science teachers who have honed their potential to the fullest.

This school year, our school has gone through numerous changes, so much progress and development. This includes the introduction of a Growth Mindset approach to learning and the flipped classroom. Howeverone big change in particular that truly surprised me was the launching of Student Led Conferences (SLC). It issomewhat similar to the usual Parent Teacher Conferences, however it allows not only the parents but thestudents to interact and share their memories and milestones for the term. Because of the Student Led Conference, information and explanations were not limited to my teacher’s viewpoint, I was able to give my stance on myjourney this term.

My experience was somehow nerve- racking, it was my first time, but I knew that it was everybody’sfirst time and that there was nothing to be worried about. Like they say, embracing a Growth Mindset is key toany challenging situation. When we first started, my adviser introduced himself to my mother for the first time. This encounter seemed awkward, but as soon as we were able to warm up to him, it went fairly smooth andwell. During the conference, I was able to share my thoughts, but it was more of a reflection for myself lastterm. I was able to talk about my strengths, achievements, and to dwell on aspects I need to improve on - myweaknesses. I was able to exhibit my strengths and weaknesses using my portfolio binder. The binder summarizesthe perseverance and effort that I have consistently exerted throughout the whole term. I was given thechance to explain, not just how I act, but also how I feel inside and outside the classroom. Although my motherand I were just given a short period of time, I can ensure that my adviser and my parents know a lot of how Ibehave and how I can improve.

Teachers Reach Out to Orphaned Children

October marks an important date forteachers as students give back and show theirsense of gratitude through the annual well-celebrated Teacher’s Day.

In response, it has always been atradition for the SSIS faculty and staff to returnthe favor through humanitarian acts thatenable each one to reflect on the blessings thatlife continues to bring, the SSFO (StonyhurstSouthville For Others)

Last October 8, another act of kindnesswas shared by the SSIS Team as they visited OurLady of Perpetual Help Children’s Home atLabac, Taal Batangas. This orphanage isconsidered the home of around 20-30 young girls

aged 2-12 years old whose parents are of low-income and cannot bring them to school. It was a long two-hour travel and add to it the tiresome and infuriating traffic of that Saturday morning.

Upon reaching the place, all the frustrations and distress were reformed by whatever energy these kids had withtheir innocent looks and eager beams.

The kids right away showed how talented they were as they sang their hearts out with different songs ofpraise. They then exhibited dance abilities with very well-choreographed numbers of the dance hits of today.

Then everything just went unprompted - the welcome messages of the Sister and Sir AC, the ice breaker andstorytelling of Tr. Mari, the simple meal for the kids, and the giving of donations which included books, some groceryitems, and other things that the kids surely wouldenjoy.

It was a short visit, but it was one thattouched every one’s heart.

The teachers and staff were with the kidsin their prayer when these kids sang:

Ikaw na ang bahala sa amin AmaAt sa mga araw na darating paDalangin namin ay pagpalain Mo sanaIkaw ang pag-ibig namin at pag-asaTanging sa ‘Yo lamang hihingi ng awaSa bawat sandali Ikaw na ang bahala

And that was one of the best ways todisconnect yourself from all the troubles andwearies that life brings.

How to help:

You can find Our Lady of Perpetual Help Children’s Home in Labac, Taal, Batangas. You can make a lot ofkids happy by bringing food, gifts, milk, and other basic needs. But please also keep in mind that time spent withthem is as priceless as the material gifts you can share with them. Make them feel loved. Play games with them, givethem a simple party, read stories to them, and sing and dance with them. For then you will realize that you are notjust changing their lives, they are changing yours too.

GLOBAL MONTH CULMINATION TAKES STUDENTS TO A FIELD DAY

No. 17 A.Y. 2016-2017

Students had a Field Day Demonstration during the culminating day of the week-long Global Monthcelebration yesterday, October 12, 2016.

Themed as One Step, One Dance, and Once Nation for the World, the demonstration featured traditionaldances representing the continents of Africa, Asia, and North and South America.

Clad in their white shirts and black pants (skirts for the girls) andaccentuated by the headdress, the ECED students performed an African-inspired dance routine.

Towards noon, the Grade School students, wearingthe Asian motif of white and red danced to a mash-upof Japanese and Filipino songs which ended in “Piliin angPilipinas!”.

The High School students, not to be left out in theirfestive yellow and black outfit and accessorized bydecorative arm bands, displayed their winning moves.

After the field demonstration was the awarding of the winnersin different competitions. Then, the students went back to theirclassrooms to prepare food relative to their country assignments. Thestudents were given the chance to partake food from other classes, sothey can have a taste of the recipes which are unique in various countries.

Congratulations to the winners of the competition and to theSLGE teachers for the successful event.

The event was graced by the Mr. and Ms. Teen SGEN 2016, Paolo MiguelYñigo Plata and Cardelyn Hernandez who gladly posed with the children in aphoto op. They were wearing the traditional costume of France.

Please find below the Extended Mid-Year Policy Guidelines that all SGEN member schools shall observe in determining thestudents who will attend Extended Mid-Year classes from the 20th to the 26th of October 2016.

1. Extended Mid-Year (EMY) classes are FREE modes of academic intervention that are meant to help students whoreceived failing marks—Low Average (LA) or Poor (P)—at the end of the First Term to catch up with subject matter/lessons and/or cope with academic demands of a specific subject. The program supports the Growth Mindset frameworkas it has been designed to give students a chance to work on academic deficiencies early so that they don’t worsen andto help students get back on track when they come back after their semestral break. Ultimately, it is designed to preventstudents from attending Summer classes at the end of the academic year.

2. Students who received LA or P marks at the end of the First Term in any of the Core or Non-Core Subjects shall berequired to attend the EMY classes.

3. Students who received failing marks in the Core Subjects shall be attending make-up classes for one week following aspecial schedule while those who got failing marks in minor and non-core subjects shall be given a performance task /special project to work on and to be submitted at the end of the week.

4. In order for the deficiency to be removed, students must pass a Removal Exam that will be administered in all the failedCore Subjects at the end of the week while a special performance task / project has to be completed and/ or submittedfor all failed minor or non-core subjects.

5. Students who will successfully pass the Removal Exam in the Core Subjects and shall punctually complete / submitan acceptable performance task / special project shall be given corresponding grades. The following guidelines inassigning grades shall be followed:

a. Grades of Low Average (LA-75%-79%) prior to the EMY classes may be raised to as high but not more thanAverage (A-80%) regardless of their high performance in the Removal Exam or performance task / specialproject.

b. Grades of Poor (P-70%-74%) prior to the EMY classes may be raised to a Low Average (LA-75%) regardlessof their high performance in the Removal Exam or performance task / special project.

6. Students who will not pass the Removal Exam or will fail to complete and/or submit an unacceptable special project shallretain their failing grade in the report card and shall be required to attend Extended Year End (EYE) classes at the endof the year if the year-end average is an LA or attend Summer Classes if the year-end average is P.*EYE classes are only applicable to Grade 6 and Grade 12 graduating students.*Students from Grades 1-5 and 7-10 are not qualified to attend EYE classes and go straight to attending SummerClasses.

7. Students who will get a grade of A or 80% after the EMY classes are disqualified from receiving the academic termaward as well as the year-end award.

This policy is being disseminated for your information and guidance.

Knights Gear Up for Intrams 2016

S! S S I S! is the best among the rest! The best of the best is yet to come as the Valiant Knights battle for

the most coveted Championship Trophy this Intramurals 2016. To date, allthe team colors had chosen theircontenders for the Mr. and Ms.Intramurals, had practiced their cheer, and had put in the final touches in theirpreparations.

The Student Services also teamedup with some franchises to provide themuch needed energy source of theathletes and the spectators – food. Theclinic is also ready to receive and nurturethe tired athletes back into the pink ofhealth.

We are all set, except for one thing – the jerseys. We gave our supplier an adequate lead time to prepare the jerseys.

As you will recall, taking of measurements was done a month ago. Despitethe sufficient time given, our supplier was not able to deliver on the agreeddate, for reasons beyond our control.

Thus, on the first day of the Intramurals, we request the students towear color-coded shirts paired with decent athlete’s shorts.

We are optimistic thatthe jerseys wil l arrive onOctober 14, and they can beworn on October 17-19. Letus look at this positively, thateven if we don’t have thejerseys at the start of theevent, we will have it on thesecond day to theChampionship Day. After all, those are the days that reallymatter, the best is yet tocome.

Attached in this bulletin is the institutional survey form for parents. Please return the same on or before October 19, 2016. Thank youvery much.
