Clinical Services• Evaluation, treatment and follow-up for acute injuries and

illness

• Management of chronic health problems

• Screening and preventative health care▫ Annual Physical Exams (forms)▫ STI screening for men and women, annual women’s

health exam and contraception management▫ HIV counseling and testing (rapid testing is free!)

• Short stay (observation and treatment)

• Liaison for students requiring hospitalization

• Referral and coordination of outside medical care

How to access care

•Appointments available by phone or online

•Same-day/urgent care appointments •Walk-ins are given next-available

appointment, may not be same day!•Nurse triage available

After hours

•On-call provider available for urgent medical issues that cannot wait until office re-opens

•HUP ER ▫separate from SHS▫co-payment for ER care

Insurance issues

•All students who pay the clinical fee can be seen at SHS

•PSIP (Penn Student Insurance Plan) covers most charges at SHS, details on website

•Students with PSIP need referrals for outside care except ER visits

•Spouses/partners pay for each visit

Influenza aka “flu”

•Contagious disease of respiratory (breathing) tract

•Caused by a virus•Symptoms:

▫fever/chills ▫cough▫sore throat▫body aches▫fatigue

H1N1 aka “swine flu”

•1st detected in the US in April 2009•Usually mild, doesn’t typically require

medical treatment•3-5 days of illness• If a student has “influenza-like illness”

(ILI):1.The student should call SHS at

Infection control
