09 SIBT International Student Guide 2020 | Make university happen. 10 sibt.nsw.edu.au | Make university happen.

Your home in SydneyWhen you study at SIBT, you can choose from a variety of accommodation types and locations to suit your individual lifestyle and budget. Choose to live in the centre of the city, in the multicultural inner-city suburbs, or in the beachside suburbs of the east and north.

Student accommodationThere are many student accommodation options close to the centre of Sydney. Choose from a wide variety of fully furnished, single or share rooms, with en-suite bathrooms and kitchenettes, onsite security, student support, common rooms and, in some cases, leisure facilities such as a gym or pool. For more information, including prices and locations visit:

iglu.com.au urbanest.com.au

Private rentalThere is also the option to rent a self-catered apartment or house, either individually or with other students. For many this is the more affordable option, and can offer more flexibility. Your weekly rent will not usually include costs such as electricity, gas, internet or phone bills, and will vary considerably depending on the suburb you choose. The further you live from the CBD the cheaper it will be – just make sure to choose a suburb well serviced by public transport. Search for shared accommodation:

flatmates.com.au flatmatefinders.com.au domain.com.au realestate.com.au

Live with an Australian family (Homestay)A Homestay gives you the opportunity to experience life with a local family. It typically includes two or three meals per day, a furnished single bedroom with access to a shared family bathroom, internet access and local phone calls. Weekly costs start from $255. The costs may be higher if meals are included. There are additional fees if you are under the age of 18. One-off placement fees may also apply. Find out more from our homestay providers:

auzziefamilies.com homestaynetwork.com.au

Short-term optionsShort-term accommodation such as hotels and hostels can be more expensive, but can be a great option if you’re not ready to finalise a place to live. Search for short-term accommodation online to find out more.

yha.com.au

Cost of livingThe Australian Government estimates an international student needs at least $20,290 per person per year to cover living expenses including accommodation, meals, incidentals, entertainment and local transport.

Below is an estimate of your weekly expenses

A shared room in student accommodation from $349

Private room in shared accommodation $220 (per room)

Homestay from $255 (per room)

Groceries from $80

Gas, electricity from $35

Phone and Internet from $20

Public transport from $40

Entertainment from $80

This estimate of expenses has been provided as a rough guide only. Actual costs will vary depending on the accommodation you choose and your lifestyle. Other expenses such as textbooks, health insurance, a rental bond and your accommodation set-up costs are not included.

For more details on cost of living visit:studyinaustralia.gov.au/global/live-in-australia/living-costsFor more information about accommodation options

in Sydney visit: sibt.nsw.edu.au/accommodation

Under 18 accommodation and welfare arrangementsIf you are under 18 at the commencement of your studies, adequate welfare arrangements must be in place to obtain your student visa. Under 18 students must demonstrate one of the following living options:

1. Live with a relative or legal custodian over 21 years old, who must be approved by the Australian Department of Home Affairs OR

2. Live with a homestay family arranged by SIBT’s approved homestay providers. If you select this option, SIBT will be responsible for issuing a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW).

Further information about welfare arrangements are available at:

immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/ getting-a-visa/visa-finder/study

sibt.nsw.edu.au

SIBT wants their younger students to be safe and happy in their accommodation and to progress well in their studies. It is also important to note that under Australian law students who are under 18 years old are considered minors. Under 18 students at SIBT therefore have regular meetings with their designated Coordinator, providing them with the opportunity to discuss ongoing enrolment and welfare matters.

Academic support More face-to-face time with lecturers Each unit requires approximately 4 hours of on-campus class time per week. You may be required to do some preparation, research or homework as part of each class, in addition to assignments and exams.

Engaging learning experience Class sizes of no more than 25 for tutorials and no more than 50 students for lectures means that it’ll feel like you’re getting one-to-one learning support. One-third of class time is spent on student activities, collaboration and interaction. Plus you’ll get the opportunity to use mobile, tablet and desktop computer apps to enhance your learning experience.

An introduction to university learning styles At SIBT, we will help you to improve your skills little by little. You will start with the basics and you will get to understand university learning styles and academic writing. Each assignment will build on the previous assignment so you won’t feel confused or overwhelmed. You will also get additional revision classes to help you understand more complex theories.

Personalised learning approachA more personalised learning environment means every student’s academic performance is closely monitored. If we notice your grades slipping, we can run additional sessions and support programs to help you improve your results – giving you the best chance for success.

Support programsWe offer all students access to free programs to help with skills such as literacy, time management, self-directed learning, assignment preparation and stress management – so you’re prepared for university success.

1.

*Provisional EntryAn IELTS of 6.0 is the requirement for entry into an SIBT Diploma. For students who meet all the other academic entry requirements specific to their program, but have an IELTS of 5.5, SIBT provides an enabling English language support unit. In these cases, all students are undertaking an accredited Diploma. The additional English language classes enable the students to be successful in their chosen Diploma and are taken in their first trimester, alongside a reduced number of Diploma units. The additional English language support does not add any additional time to the overall duration of study – students can still complete their Diploma in 12 months.

A student’s ongoing enrolment in the Diploma is dependent upon successful completion of the English support unit. Through this, SIBT ensures that students have achieved the required English language proficiency to successfully complete their chosen Diploma.

Navitas English Pathways If you don’t meet the English language requirements, you will need to complete a full-time English program at Navitas English before beginning your studies at SIBT. To learn more about Navitas English visit: navitasenglish.edu.au
