STUDENT ENGAGEMENT: CREATIVE ACTIVITIES & DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY 3

Introduction

In today’s digital and globalized world, innovation drives prosperity and leaders recognize

that student engagement in creative activities and digital technology has high value in helping

students acquire the capacities and skills necessary for meeting the challenges of the 21st

century. And yet, we know little about the creative activities that students engage in both

during regular school hours and during outside school time. We lack a detailed understanding

of how often young people are involved in a range of creative and technology-related

activities, what this involvement looks like in practice, and students’ own perspectives on the

importance of these activities in their everyday life. This

study aims to fill the gap in our knowledge of student

engagement in creative activities and digital technology

from the perspective of young people themselves. Using a

comprehensive and systematic approach to documenting

student engagement, we hope to assist educators in

gaining a better understanding of their students’ beliefs,

values, and experiences across a diverse range of

creative and artistic activities and technology-infused

learning environments.

About the study

The conceptual framework

Our theoretical approach to exploring the significance of

youth engagement in creative activities and digital technology is based on substantial literature

in education, positive youth development, communication and cultural studies, arts education,

multimodal literacies and digital technology. Our approach requires a theoretical braiding of

these perspectives to examine variations in student engagement patterns across diverse

activities. One way of characterizing these interrelationships is through the metaphor of a

“ripple effect” or “spheres of activity,” which are found in ecological systems theories. This

approach emphasizes how different contexts and social interactions can impact on situations

that are not directly related to the initial situation or interaction. The ripple effect appears to

be a key process in young people’s 21st century learning, particularly through the affordances

of digital media technology. There is little doubt that digital media technologies have made

new approaches to learning possible by facilitating communication and collaboration, creative

expression, individualized and personalized learning experiences, and learner-generated

content. They also resonate with young people who are oriented towards the use of new

technologies and eager to explore their possibilities. It is therefore not surprising that the

Page 4: STUDENT ENGAGEMENT: CREATIVE ACTIVITIES AND DIGITAL …

opportunities and affordances of Web 2.0 technologies have become integrated within new

educational visions and frameworks for 21st century learning.

The Landscape of 21st Century Learning

In the 21st century, young people have become lifewide learners and their learning has become

unbundled from traditional boundaries of school and home. Creative activities in particular are

now taking place across physical and virtual life spaces within home, school, local and online

communities, and (mostly through the Internet) the wider world. Distinctions between formal and

informal learning now seem unnecessary as elements of both formality and informality occur in

the classroom, home, and other places in the community. Instead of viewing formal and informal

as two separate worlds, a more integrating approach is needed to find ways of understanding

the interconnections between these two worlds as experienced by young people. Often there is

little or no connection between activities that take place during school and outside of school

time. This can be a barrier or constraint to deepening student engagement and expanding

learning opportunities.

Our Perspective on Student Engagement in Creative Activities

Much of the research on the benefits of student engagement in creative activities is based on

one or more of the following three fallacies: that exposure to the arts, in whatever form, can be

approached as a single phenomenon; that a particular arts experience will have similar effects

regardless of the context in which it occurs or the characteristics of the individual(s) involved;

and that the effects of arts engagement are linear. Our perspective recognizes instead the

changing nature of engagement in creative activities that has become possible through the

affordances of digital technology. We seek to examine these changes in the context of

connected and overlapping patterns of formal, informal and non-formal learning, the

development of socio-emotional competences, and the kinds of learning experiences that initiate

and sustain student engagement and lead to positive self-perceptions.

We hope our findings will provide an important first step in the development of an integrated

theoretical framework for understanding the ways young people today are engaging in

creative and technology-infused learning environments with the aim of creating greater

connections between school and outside school time that can inform educational policy and

practice in the future.

Survey Data Collection

To study student engagement in creative activities and digital technology, we administered a

survey to 23 schools across six school divisions (Franco-manitoban, Frontier, Louis Riel, Pembina

Trails, Seven Oaks, and Winnipeg) in Manitoba during May-June 2016. For detailed maps of

the Franco-manitoban and Winnipeg school

divisions, visit the website below. Rural, urban,

suburban, northern, English, Francophone, and

French Immersion schools were surveyed. The

majority of the students who completed survey were

in Grades 8 and 9.

Students who received parental consent to

participate were asked to complete a survey in

their classrooms, school libraries, or gymnasiums

which took approximately 30-40 minutes to

complete. The survey asked students to:

a) report how often they were involved in a range

of creative, arts, and technology-related activities

during school and outside of school time.

b) identify their favourite arts/creative activity

from a wide range of possibilities that included (but

were not limited to) playing an instrument, singing,

visual arts, dance, drama/theatre, creative writing,

poetry, graphic arts, comedy, architecture,

cartooning, photography, film/media arts, graphic arts, animation, music videos, figure skating,

and martial arts.

c) describe the learning environment for their creative activity and to tell us the benefits they

derived from engaging in this activity.
