student devotions It gives us great pleasure to offer you our first edition of student devotions, an ‘in-house’ produced PDF Booklet format of original devotional contributions authored by our students. Students, who are studying a variety of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, present their thoughts on a topic of their choice through the readings presented. In order to provide a medium for our students to publish original work, we came up with the idea of a student devotions in the form of a PDF Booklet. We hope you enjoy reading our student devotions and that you may be blessed by their thoughts and insights. We look forward to continuing our series with a second edition of student devotions in 2016. My Prayer

My prayer Lord Jesus is that we would be of those in the Great Cloud – that your Holy Spirit would open our eyes to where we naively accept and live for the world’s standards. May we fall to our knees in repentance and worship. May you inspire and sustain us to boldly and humbly pursue your Kingdom in our life, family, city and across the earth. Amen

Remember the marathon in the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000? Toward the finish of the gruelling 42km race the athletes entered the Olympic stadium, greeted by the cheer and roar of a 45,000 strong crowd. The ground must have shaken as the competitors neared the finish line. This imagery captures my imagination as I read these verses. However, I also wonder who is in this ‘cloud of witnesses’ watching us persevere in our marathon-like, life of faith in Jesus?

Chapter 11 of Hebrews describes some people in this crowd as ‘tortured’, ‘mocked’, ‘imprisoned’, ‘afflicted’, ‘destitute’ and yet, ‘obtained a good testimony through faith’ in God’s coming Kingdom. Jesus said that His Kingdom would advance to the ‘poor’, ‘broken-hearted’, ‘captive’, ‘blind’ and ‘oppressed’ when He announced the beginning of His ministry in Luke 4. He also described those who were ‘poor in spirit’ and ‘persecuted’ as ‘blessed’ because the Kingdom of God would be theirs (Matt 5). It is obvious that God’s Kingdom consists of a crowd with pretty humble beginnings – and in the case of Hebrews 11, humble endings by the world’s standards.

Quite obviously our world appreciates, and even celebrates, the lives of the wealthy, influential and successful. This emerges in our culture when we assume that this is the direction in which our lives should be headed. Our marathon-like life race competes for a crowd that screams “Wealth! Power! Success!”.

But this is not the chant of the great cloud of witnesses. Instead they chant for “Humility! Perseverance! Courage!” – the characteristics required for contributing to God’s radically different but eternally beautiful Kingdom. Their applause is for those that love mercy, contend for justice and humbly reflect Jesus, who perfectly exemplified the way to run the race of faith.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and let us run with perseverance the race set before us, looking always to Jesus the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him, endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Have you ever been deep into Jenolan Caves when the guide has turned off the light? With absolutely no source of light, it becomes so black you can’t see your hand in front of your face. Have you ever been in a really dark place when a small light appeared, perhaps the distant lights of a car on the horizon. I think hikers, lost in the bush, feel reinvigorated and drawn to a distant light, perhaps from a cabin or a torch.

In the 70’s I ventured into an abandoned gold mine near Armidale, so far along the mineshaft that daylight was merely a speck in the distance. Amazingly, there was something comforting about that speck of light … it showed me the way out, it gave me hope and confidence. I reckon I would have become engulfed with anxiety had I turned a corner and lost sight of that speck.

Light is important, powerful and associated with life.

The first thing God created was light.

God was visible as a great light as He led the Israelites through the desert.

Jesus’s face shone like the sun and His clothes became as white as the light when He met with Moses and Elijah at the ‘transfiguration’.

After Moses spent time with God, his face glowed from the light of God.

It was a light from Heaven that flashed around Saul on the road to Damascus, a light that knocked him off his feet.

Romans 13:12 encourages us to put on the “armour of light”. Jesus calls His followers, “people of the light” and the “light of the world”, charged with the job of bringing His light into dark places. A world without Godly values is a place that would not be good.

My Prayer

Dear Father, I thank you for always listening to my prayers and acting on them as you see best. Thank you for teaching me that worrying isn't the best action to take in trying circumstances and, most of all, thank you for loving your children. O to be a parent of such devotion! Amen.

My mother had been extremely ill, stuck in hospital with one kidney that didn’t work at all anymore and the other not functioning. She had three operations already, two without any anaesthesia (due to them needing to be able to gauge her reactions throughout), and needed another three in quick succession.

I was the one who drove her to the hospital and had been there most days to spend time with her and see that she was being looked after properly. It was a great privilege because my mother is a delight. Unfortunately, I also got to see when she wasn’t being attended to adequately.

Needless to say, my family had a great deal of worry during that week. Happily, I can tell you, that I was largely quite calm through most of it as I was continually offering up my worries to Jesus, thanking Him for His care and asking Him for help. I endeavoured to show the others in my family that my mum was entirely in His hands and that they also needed to ask for His help, with varying success.

What have I understood from all this? Simply this, that no matter how big the problem is, He will help you. There is little point in worrying, because it changes nothing; prayer does.

Now I can sit comfortably here in my chair and feel extremely loved and phenomenally grateful, because I know that He has helped me yet again and I didn't need to panic or fuss. I know that I am part of the little flock Jesus speaks of. Sometimes, I can scarcely comprehend what it means to know that God has chosen to give me a part in His kingdom. It is the most valuable of gifts.

"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your father has been pleased to give you the kingdom."

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, I heard your Words and I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I humbly come and ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died for my sin, and I ask that you help me to keep me from sinning. Jesus, my Saviour, come into my heart; teach me and guide me. With God’s grace I am willing to obey and follow Christ Jesus with all of my heart and life. Amen

Often I lead the Sunday morning worship service. As a worship leader one must have a singing voice. It is a well-known fact that I do not have that quality. But God has blessed me with a wife who can sing, and whenever I am up there to lead I focus on my wife’s voice. Among fifty or sixty people singing I am able to hear her and pick up the tone. It is amazing that I can filter all other voices and let her guide me in my singing. This one particular Sunday it was my turn to lead and my wife was not there. I’ll let you guess what happened.

Almost two thousand years ago the Pharisees and the Sadducees were at loggerheads about the resurrection. They debated whether to keep the laws and which ones. The Herodians had political agendas. The Greeks were after wisdom. The philosophers wanted more understanding. The pagans encouraged the worship of idols. Caesars wanted to be worshiped as gods.

It was among those conflicts and uncertainties that a voice in the wilderness was preaching about the coming of the kingdom of God, the coming of the Messiah. “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (Matt. 3:2). John the Baptist paved the way for Jesus and few heard the message and accepted the truth.

John the Apostle, recorded Jesus’ seven declarations to prove His deity: I Am the bread of life (Jn. 6:35), “I Am the light of the world” (Jn. 8:12), “I Am the gate of the sheep” (Jn. 10:7), “I Am the good shepherd” (Jn. 10:11), “I Am the resurrection and life” (Jn. 11:25), “I Am the way the truth and the life” (Jn. 14:60), and “I Am the vine” (Jn. 15:1).

Today is not any different from those days. Scientists debate about climate change, and global warming. World politicians’ upbeat the idea of World Government. Atheists claim there is no God. Evolutionists advocate that life emerged naturally from pre-existence. World religions proclaim their supremacy.

Among all these voices Christians are heralding the return of the King, Jesus Christ. But only a few are listening and focusing on that voice. Some are able to filter out and discern the truth from the imitation yet others are deceived and confused.

Dear readers, which voice are you listening to? One will lead to the path of destruction and the other to the arms of the King. If you are willing to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour pray this prayer or one similar to it.

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near”

Dear Lord, we thank you for blessing us with the freedom and resources to know you better. We ask that you would continue to give wisdom to your people as we study your word. In Jesus’ name, Amen

It’s hard to misunderstand those verses. The Bible speaks about wisdom as brightening a person’s face, being sweet to the soul and of more value than gold.

As we go about our Bible studies we should not just see them as a chore in our day that we have to endure or survive. Instead cherish the opportunity to gain wisdom. So many of the things we learn in the world are worthless but the things we learn from God’s word will last for all of eternity. Wherever God leads us in the future the wisdom He gives us will guard our lives. “A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps” (Proverbs 14:15)

We are blessed in this generation to be able to study God’s word as closely as we do. Through studying Church History I have learnt about the many thousands of people that have given their lives for the preservation of God’s word and for our freedom to read it everyday. So we must never take for granted how privileged we are to have the resources to gain wisdom by knowing God through His word.

“Sell everything and buy Wisdom! Forage for Understanding! Don't forget one word! Don't deviate an inch! Never walk away from Wisdom - she guards your life; love her - she keeps her eye on you Above all and before all, do this: Get Wisdom! Write this at the top of your list: Get Understanding!”

My Prayer

Lord God, I pray and am thankful that you are guiding my steps, teaching and encouraging me so that I am able to carry out and accomplish the plan you have for my life without fear but with the boldness and strength that you daily provide for me. Amen

There are times in our journey when God has us in an equipping phase. We may not know or understand this at the time that we are being equipped and given proper equipment to accomplish what God has planned for us in the days to come. We may be surprised at what God is preparing us for, but He will show us the way. There is no place in this transition for anxiety or fear that you will not be ready, not perfectly equipped for God's plan and purpose for your life. When you allow God to be in the lead, your steps are perfectly ordered, says the Lord. Let Me be the one to move you.

Verses 9 through 21 of Romans 12 contain several short exhortations that are general in nature, encouraging Christians on how to live their daily lives. Verse 12 is directed at the Christian focusing on three characteristics that centre on their relationship with God that will produce spiritual growth.

Our hope is not unsure; something that we wish will come true. It is not the same as saying, "I hope it won't rain tomorrow." Our hope is a sure thing, afforded us by God's provision of salvation and kept secure by His never ending care for us. We not only have hope during our life on earth, but because of Jesus' resurrection we have the hope of everlasting life.

Affliction, hardship, persecution, and trials are circumstances we prefer to avoid. However, it is during these times when our true convictions come to light. The way we respond during these times show whether we are depending upon God or ourselves. If we are depending upon God, we can be patient and at peace, knowing that He is in control and has a purpose for the trial.

Prayer is our way of communicating with God; He communicates with us though His word, the Bible. Without communication the relationship breaks down. Through prayer we can worship Him, ask forgiveness for our sins, thank Him for the many ways He has blessed us, and ask for guidance and strength as we seek to serve Him.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for the joy I have because of the hope you have given me, for the courage you give as I patiently endure affliction, and for the privilege I have in coming to you directly in prayer. Amen

Day 8 Philippians 4:13

Waisale Tikoisolomoni Serevi is a famous Fijian rugby player who was considered one of the greatest rugby players ever.

On his boots, strapping, and jersey for every match Serevi had the words “Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me". He stated that during games where he was tired and fatigued, the verse on his boots and strapping would serve as a reminder to push through the barriers and finish the game.

During the 2005 – 2006 Rugby 7’s season, Serevi coached his Fijian side to an historic first ever championship series win, marking this the first time that a country other than New Zealand winning the championship.

Paul reminds us in Philippians that it is possible for us to achieve all things with Christ, there may be times that we are tired and just feel like the goals, dreams and aspirations are unachievable, but Paul reminds us about where our strength is from and that because of Christ it is possible. He encourages us to push on and persevere because we can do ALL things through Christ.

Heavenly Father, we are so thankful that You sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, to atone for our sin. No one accomplished for us what He accomplished. We thank You that His blood was shed for the remission of sin and now, that which was a stumbling block to our fellowship with You, is taken out of the way. We honour You for such provision in our lives and commit to continue in the proclamation of the Lord’s death until He returns. Amen

In the Greco-Roman world, a Cheirographon (handwriting) was “a statement of debt signed by the debtor in token of his acknowledgement of his indebtedness.” The apostle Paul employs this term metaphorically in verse 14 to denote our indebtedness to God in the face of His holy Law. Indeed, once our conscience is awakened by the Spirit to our sinful state (Jn. 16: 7-11), we can only concur with the Law that we fall short of its demands for divine justice.

I am so thankful that the Holy Spirit, who convicts us of sin, will not leave us in this state, pointing us to the efficacy of Christ’s work on the Cross. Here, as we place our trust in God’s provision for our wretched state, that statement of debt is wiped out, and not only that, is taken out of the way. It is nailed to the Cross, because it was only Christ who perfectly fulfilled its righteous requirements and was subjected to the penalty due for our failure to meet its standards.

I am so thankful for our Father’s provision in Christ! That which was once contrary to our fellowship with Him, the glaring impasse of a life that fell short of His Law, has now been removed through the death and resurrection of Jesus! Not only that, Christ’s death meant for us a (public) despoiling of malevolent powers intent on thwarting God’s redemptive purposes for us. Hallelujah!

My Prayer:

To the heavenly Father is to show me that all of us are personally implicated in guilt. Help me to forbid the thinking that “I love you based on what you do and who you are," but rather to think, "I love you based on who I am. I love you because of me and not because of you." A husband who does that will protect his wife wholly in sacrifice because of God’s love. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Ephesians 5:25 shows us a truth that evokes an attempt to re-formulate the relationships between husband and wife. Let us sit quietly for a while and think of how we encounter a certain nuance in the life of a marriage. While I was reading Ephesians 5:25 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”, I thought that this passage is an encouragement for people facing a broken marriage.

Could you divorce your spouse? The answer may depend on the influence of actions in how we respond to them daily. If the answer is “yes”, it could mean that your spouse has been loved but the love is now gone or could perhaps depend on their actions. But perhaps your spouse would be loved as long as they remained faithful and cared for you.

And if your answer is favourable to them and you said “certainly not!” then you would have to love your spouse no matter what they did, even if they never got you water, or made your meals. Even if they committed adultery, you would be expected to just keep on love them and to never mention divorce, as it just does not exist.

However, John 3:16 tells us, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." It is a theme to declare God’s love in action and we can think and ask ourselves “Would God divorce people?” The Bible's perspective is that God will never separate us from His love. He will keep His love in the world over and over, millennia after millennia, even if all that time we reject His great love. He completely loves us, even if we sin more than any other people.

GOD’S FAITHFULNESS Lord you have given me so much, all my desires have been met, all of my needs covered and all of my petitions heard and granted

Lord God Almighty I praise you for Psalm 51, which reflects your nature of forgiveness and eternal love for your creation. We are your glory manifested in our lives for all to see your magnificence in your pardoning a sinner like me to have your will enabling my free will to choose to “let me hear the sounds of joy and gladness; and though you have crushed me and broken me, I will be happy once again. Close your eyes to my sins and wipe out all my evil. Create a pure heart in me, O God, and put a new and loyal spirit in me” (Psalm 51:8-10), that I may see your wonderments in transformation of all that was lost regained.

Whenever I am worried or fearful, I just remember His kind words to me, “I will never abandon you.” Let us be bold then and say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6).

This is the story of God’s faithfulness for us to hold onto and to know the truth, and the truth will set us free to worship you and adore you Lord Jesus for walking with me in all of life’s trials to steady me with your peace which surpasses all understanding, and to know that “The Lord, and the Lord alone is our God,” (Deut. 6:4 GNT), faithful and true forevermore.

Father God, thank You for Your Son and His willingness to die in our place. Our desires we give to You; we want to live in Your righteousness, delighting to be the much fruit Your Son brought forth. In Jesus precious name we pray. Amen

Dying to self Pre-conceived ideas cause many of us to miss the truth! Israel believed that Messiah would come as a reigning King; therefore they lacked true understanding when He spoke many times of His coming death.

Whilst riding a young donkey into Jerusalem, all worshipped, Him this reinforced their wrong belief system. Then certain Greeks wanted to meet with Jesus: to Phillip and Andrew this was further proof. How important Jesus’ words are, in verse 24, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

In John 6:35 Jesus calls Himself “the bread of life”; wheat is the most common grain used to make bread, and here the Lord tells us that He, a single grain, the only Begotten Son of God, had to fall into the ground and die in order that He might redeem both Israel and Gentile to Himself as the fruit of righteousness.

Wheat doesn’t just change its form; it actually dies in one form and emerges in another. When our Lord was crucified, His death and resurrection changed Him from the physical to His spiritual body. As His children by faith, this too is our hope. By acknowledging our wickedness and actually hating our earthly lives, it enables us to die to ourselves and rejoice in the Eternal Life Christ Jesus has given us.

How wonderful to be a grain grown in Him!

“The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!” Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. Serve God with a pure heart

It is a great privilege that we are chosen, called and appointed to be Jesus’ servants. This means that Jesus had trust in us so that we could serve Him to continue and fulfill the mission of God. In order to accomplish this task; first, we should serve God with a humble heart. For me, humility and a pure heart with a right motivation are strong foundations and the most essential things in ministry, because God looks at our hearts (1 Sam 16: 7).

Second, we should not serve God in our own strength, but must depend on God and His power. The Holy Spirit, “Parakletos”, is a Counsellor, a helper who was sent and given to us, to live with us, be in us and accompany us (John 14: 17). We represent the hand of God in this world to continue the “Missio Dei” / “Mission of God”. We are only His instruments; He is everything. He is able to do far more than we could ever ask for or imagine. He does everything by His power that is working in us (Eph 3: 20 /NIRV).

If we are honest and our hearts are right before Him, we will never feel bored in ministry, but will be full of peace and joy. Our spirit will be on fire and God will never put us to shame.

Therefore, let serve Him with all that we have, because everything is from Him, through Him and for Him. All glory only to Him.

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.”

How readily we seek to teach others by telling them what to do? Paul suggests a better way …

In the things we say, with simple wisdom and honesty, integrity and openness, and by sensitively knowing when to speak and when to say nothing.

By the way we conduct ourselves, how we respond to challenging people and situations, or through the little things we could do such as serving in the kitchen or crèche, sweeping floors or cleaning toilets, hospital visits … and more.

Through a love which selflessly serves others, sincerely cares in practical ways, forgives and forgets, tolerates, honours, encourages, protects, perseveres, values, includes, trusts.

With strong and evident faith, audaciously taking action because we trust God; and strengthening that faith through an ever-growing relationship with Jesus.

And finally, in purity! Arguably purity is the most difficult aspect of Christian living today, especially for our young people … not because they’re worse than I was at the same age, but because my generation has left the world as a place where it’s easier to make mistakes. Drugs, alcohol, pornography, premarital sex, violence, marital breakdown and unfaithfulness, selfishness and self-interest, insincerity and lack of trust are just some of the legacies for our young people to overcome.

It’s time to lead the way with a better example … an example which teaches, assists and encourages others struggling with life’s many challenges.

A Prophet Like Unto Me!

There is a love far beyond our understanding, a love so sacrificial, that one is completely willing to put away their own desires and benefits in order that others may be totally forgiven.

In Exodus 31, 32 we read two things – the giving of the Ten Commandments and the total rebellion of Israel in making and worshipping the golden calf. Our God is so righteous and holy that any sin demands punishment. He tells Moses “Now then let Me alone, that My anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them...”

Under the Lord’s direction, Moses, stands in the gate and calls, “Who is on the Lord’s side, come unto me.” That day, thousands were killed and a separation was placed between the holy and unholy. Moses returns to the Mount and intercedes for the nation, his prayer is but a reflection of the love of Christ for us – “forgive, but if not, blot me out from Your book…”

A prophet like Moses from among Israel was a promise given. Jesus says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” Christ Jesus, the grain of wheat, and only Begotten Son of God, stood in the gate and carried our sins. Although we are an obstinate people, the full wrath of God was poured upon Christ Jesus to bring about our Redemption. In Him we are forgiven and have been born again; much fruit unto righteousness.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

Yes, we can!

At the beginning of Israel’s wandering through the desert Moses had to send twelve spies to explore the Promised Land. As they came back they confirmed that God had a great country for them in mind. However, there were also some obstacles to be taken. The descendants of Anak, a race of giants, and some other strong nations were present. Of the twelve spies, ten of them judged it impossible to move on and discouraged the people by telling them that they had seen giants and that they were not able to face them. “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them”.

Caleb and Joshua were the only ones who had a different perspective. They didn’t ignore the reality but they looked at the problem through God’s lenses. “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it” . These men of faith concluded that they could do it: “we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us” (Num 14:9).

What are the giants in your life? Do you look at them in the right perspective? Unbelief blinds us for what God wants to do. Unbelief also gives us a distorted vision of who we are. Are we scary grasshoppers that jump off, or are we more than conquerors through Him who loved us (Rom 8:37)? Unbelief also delays God’s plan with us. The Israelites had to stay in the dessert for another 38 years. All adults died, except for two. They believed in a God who was able. How great is your God?

There may have been days, nights, and periods within your life where you have cried out but felt like no one is listening, that no one really cares. You may, perhaps, have looked at your phone and wondered why do you feel so alone? You may be going through financial struggles, or in need of a friend. For some the light seems so dim, because you may think no one can see the pain behind the smile on your face.

If you’re struggling, take heart, He will give you the strength your soul needs to persevere and wait on the Lord. He will not delay when you call for Him. The Lord has promised that when we face difficult times, we have a Helper! Our help is from the Lord, who holds all of creation together. God is with you no matter what you are facing this very day. He has promised to never leave you by the roadside, but to stand by you, until the end.

God will answer you, because He has always been there with you from the very beginning. He will answer you because He is always listening. He is just waiting for you to call out His name. Just like when Peter cried out, Lord, save me, Jesus will answer you by giving you the hope you need to stand courageous in the Lord in your time of need.

It is at times easy to fall into the trap of thinking it would have been so much easier in Jesus’ time to believe because you could see and hear Him. He demonstrated His strength in so many ways that it would seem unfathomable not to believe in Him and yet people didn’t and at times even His disciples didn’t get His point.

This passage is an excellent reminder for us to not forget the real issues because of an immediate or pressing need. “Why are you talking about having no bread?” The disciples had recently fed five thousand and then four from a scant supply, not to mention they then collected baskets full of left overs, yet the first time they are in need they go into a huddle to consider what they don’t have.

I’m not sure of His tone or the expression on His face but you can determine from the response that Jesus was amazed at the situation. His questions are a good schedule for us to hold ourselves accountable to when we find ourselves in a situation of need.

What are you talking about? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? He goes on to remind them of examples of His power that they only recently were apart of and then he asks…

‘Do you still not understand?’

There is an excellent lesson here for all of us. After all we have seen and heard do we still not understand?

“ The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. ‘Be careful,’ Jesus warned them. ‘Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.’ They discussed this with one another and said, ‘It is because we have no bread.’ Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: ‘Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?’ ‘Twelve,’ they replied. ‘And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?’ They answered, ‘Seven.’ He said to them, ‘Do you still not understand?’

Christians sometimes have a tendency to take verses out of context. I have seen dozens of posts on Facebook, a few devotional articles and at least two children’s songs on Phil 4:13. This verse is often used to say that God gives me strength, and therefore I have a sort of holy superpower. I can do anything!

This is not necessarily wrong theology. God’s Holy Spirit will empower the Christian to do anything that His will demands for their life, and prayer changes the reality of this world in many ways. Yet this is not what Paul is saying in this verse. God is definitely omnipotent, but we are not – and we rely on the strength God gives us.

So what DOES Paul mean here? In the previous paragraph, Paul is thanking the Philippians for contributing to his needs. He is quick to tell them that he’s not covertly demanding more, because as verse 12 tells us he knows what it’s like to have plenty and to be in need, and he has learned how to be content no matter what– “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.”

This verse does not promise that Christ will allow us a blank cheque to do whatever it is that we want. It’s promising something more useful. There will be times of scarcity in life; Paul is not pretending otherwise. But when things are lean, we can be content.

Why?

I can do all this – I can be content – through Him who gives me strength.

In Hebrew the name (Elohim) is the plural name and general term for our one true ‘God’, it expresses His greatness and glory, and contains the idea of creativity and governing power, of omnipotence and sovereignty. Many of us know and speak of His character: - He is HOLY, RIGHTEOUS, a God of LOVE and a God of WRATH. To be God He also has to have the ability TO GIVE AND TAKE LIFE, He has to have AUTHORITY OVER ALL THAT HE HAS CREATED. The wonderful thing is that our God (Elohim) has never failed and never will, for truly He is God; but have we considered what He carries? The greatest thing that comes to mind is responsibility.

Yet God carries it with total faithfulness in who He is and what He has done. To be faithful in His promises, be they blessing or cursing; and the responsibility to fulfil all He has said or prophesied through His servants, the prophets, without one failure or mistake. Just think about it – if He cannot do this - then He is just not God and never could be!

In comparison we carry unfaithfulness, self-orientation, changeableness, and the inability to create or sustain, without hope and certainly failing to meet the standards of God even when we are at our best.

Some scoff and claim there is no God and even if there is how can we know He is faithful; then again some say, “Does it really matter to me?” The wonderful thing is that God is in the business of revealing Himself to all: even when we scoff, neglect or disbelieve in Him. However even we who have chosen to follow Christ at times neglect to walk in the Spirit and apply the Word of God to our lives, as we should. We too have responsibility to be obedient to Him, so that He and He alone may receive all glory in our lives.

Jesus Christ, God’s Holy Son is the exact representation of the Father. 1He reveals His righteousness and His wrath and therefore, each one of us is without excuse. God has set eternity in the hearts of men, our desire is to live forever, but our hardened hearts still cannot understand how this can be. It can only be through the amazing grace of God’s gift of His Son. He carried the entire wrath that we should have carried and He carried it for us – so that on the Cross-, He could honestly cry, “It is finished”. The job of redemption was done!

As I grow in my faith and understanding of God’s nature, I find that I am growing bolder in my desire and ability to proclaim Jesus as my Lord in settings I previously wouldn’t.

As the only Christian in my family, football team and workplace, there are many opportunities for me to explain and speak about my faith. Despite these opportunities, it can be easy to find ourselves at times lacking boldness in declaring Jesus as Lord.

The world wants us to fear the judgement of others and conform to keeping quiet about our beliefs, yet Jesus calls us to preach His Gospel to others (Mark 16:15). For me the growth in boldness has come directly from my heart. The more I uncover the nature of the Lord and understand how incredible He truly is, the more my heart fills with awe and wonder. The more my heart fills with a reverence for the Lord, the more it overflows with the words of His gospel and proclamations of His good works.

The Scriptures are clear that we need to guard our hearts, for all we do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). I have found that the key to declaring Jesus to others with gentleness and respect, as we are called to do, is to completely fill my heart with Him.

For me, preaching Jesus is simply an external reaction to an internal transaction.

“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

I have given some thought as to whether there is anything not covered by the parameters established in these verses and it would seem that everything is well covered. Yet even having made the decision years ago to accept the promises of God as my own, having developed a relationship with God that doesn’t see a day go by without conversation, consultation and or appreciation; I still, when things get tough, forget that in these verses everything is covered and that as the proceeding verse states I am more than a conqueror.

Conqueror of what then becomes the real question. More and more I have come to realise it is not the tough situation. Generally what needs to be conquered is my lack of acceptance or true understanding of the love that God offers. And when I finally get to this point of understanding then nothing else matters.

My aim is to get to that place of understanding quickly. To stop wasting time over regret, fear of the unknown, re examination of situations, indignation about being wronged the list is considerable, and to go straight to the position that regardless of what the situation may be, nothing can separate me from the love of God.

The other niggling thought that sometimes creeps in is that this cannot be true for me because I am not worth loving and the beautiful thing is he has that covered as well. The truth is I’m not but He loves me anyway. Anon

Do you remember the Rolling Stones song “I can’t get no satisfaction, but I try and I try and I try, I can’t get no satisfaction”. We live in a society where we are constantly looking for things that will satisfy us.

John 6:24-40 talks about “The Bread of Life” but here Jesus is not referring to food that will satisfy the physical body. The crowd had gathered on the lake where Jesus and His disciples were. They were recipients in the feeding of the five thousand and were looking for more of this “bread”. They didn’t understand what Jesus was saying in vs 33 when He said “I am the bread of life”, for the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. They were still thinking about the manna that God had provided to their ancestors.

The answer to finding satisfaction has nothing to do with money, prestige, social standing, health or any other physical need. The one answer we need most in life is how to experience lasting peace, hope, security, love, and meaning when everything we thought would bring us happiness and fulfillment has failed or been taken from us. The only way to satisfy that need is to receive the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ into our hearts and lives.

“Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”

Ephesians 1:18-19

There are many wonderful truths in Scripture to thrill our hearts. The passages cited here bring out two important points about our relationship with the Lord.

First, it is great to know that we serve a God who hears us when we pray to Him. We do not serve a God who is unable to hear us, even though He dwells in unapproachable light (1 Tim 6:16) and dwells in the highest heavens above the stars (Job 22:12).

Our prayers get through to Him and He does hear us. And He is not unfeeling, disinterested or uncaring. He hears and responds, just as He responded to the cries of the Israelites in Egypt and delivered them out of their afflictions (Ex 3:7). So when the Psalm writer cried to God from the depths of his despair he could have every expectation that the Lord would hear him from the heights of heaven.

Of course God also expects us to hear Him and to do what He asks. But He knows our weaknesses and shortcomings and failures. And so the second thrilling truth is that the Lord is merciful in His response to our prayers. He does not expect us to attain perfection before He offers help and mercy. If He would ever require sinless perfection from us then, as the Psalmist asks, "Who could stand?" Not a single person. Instead, He stands ready to forgive us, to show us mercy in times of need and to respond to our requests. He hears and He responds with mercy! What an exciting truth is that!

“ Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD! O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy! If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.“ “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”

Many who have grown up in a Christian family or who went to Sunday School or youth group when they were young have verses which resonate to them and spring to the forefront of their mind at various times in their life. It is as if the Scripture itself takes on power from the source, giving direction, comfort, and motivation, whatever seems to be required at the time. The words apply to our lives and become alive within us.

This verse is a favourite of mine. It has sprung to mind on many occasions for more than thirty years. I have taken it apart and put it back together in my mind hundreds of times. It, among others has been a benchmark for experience.

At times when I am afraid it is an excellent reminder the situation is not of God and I should go to Him for comfort and His peace. Similarly when I lack confidence or am overcome with nervousness, it is again a message that this has not come from God and I don’t need to feel this way.

The rest of the verse attests to what we have available to us. They are gifts, abilities, a new benchmark for how we approach life experiences that might otherwise evoke a fearful or nervous response.

The verse that follows this is, “So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord.” And what is it now that you can tell them? You can tell them that they can know God for themselves and once they do they can lay claim to His power and love and self-discipline and not surrender to fear and timidity. Anon

Day 31 Ephesians 2:10

My Prayer Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your grace and mercy in saving me. You knew before I was born and you have plans for my life so that I may do good works that will bring glory and honour to you. Thank you for making me who I am and for allowing me to rejoice in being the person you created in me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

Ephesians chapter, 2 verse 10 is an extraordinary

statement - it suggests that God has already set out our

tasks for us. So all we have to do is what God has already

prepared for us. And we know that in Christ, we have the

ability to do whatever, he has set out for us to do.

When I realise who I am, I can rejoice in what I am.

Knowing who I am, allows me to express my God given

ability as a Christian. In chapters 1 and 2 of Ephesians, I

know that …

I am a Saint (v1).

God knew me, even before the foundation of the world

(v4).

God has a wonderful purpose for my life and has

prepared the way for me (v5).

God redeemed me by the blood of Jesus Christ (v7a).

I do not need to feel guilty for every sin I commit –

every sin is covered (v7b).

He lavished me with his grace – He poured it out (v8).

God has let me in on his big plan (v9).

He has given me the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of all of

the above (v13).

He gave me new life, although physically alive I was

spiritually dead – for it was by God’s grace that I have

been saved (2:5).

The great victory over Satan has been won (2:6) This is who I am, and because of who I am, I can now enjoy fellowship with God and the freedom to relate peacefully and purposely with other Christians in His name.

“10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
