    A VERY Brief History:

    1925Representatives from 14 colleges and universities met todiscuss vocational and guidance problems in highereducation

    1925 1936Data was collected from many institutions

    1937The American Council on Education presented a landmarkreport, the Student Personnel Point of View (SPPV) whichasserted that educators must guide the whole student toreach his/her full potential

    1960 to PresentBeginning of significant changes in student affairs andhigher education (Vietnam War, civil rights, womensmovements)developmental theories began to emerge

    A new way of thinking

    There is a connection between learning

    and developmentthey are not separate,but rather intertwined/one in the same inmany ways. A student who developscognitively or emotionally is a betterequipped learner. A student with a great

    sense of confidence and self-identity ismore confident in the classroom, etc..

    Why Use Theory:

    Its more than memorizing stages, vectors, concepts,theory has four increasingly powerful uses:

    1. Descriptiona conceptualization of what is happening withindevelopmental task

    2. Explanationcan help understand where a student is cognitively

    3. Predictionthe ability to predict the developmental outcome(very few theories can do this)

    4. Control (which no developmental theory has yet toaccomplish

    Case #1: Voting EligibilityJoey is a sophomore and he is currently running for SGApresident. He has a situation that he has come to you foradvice on because he is unsure on how to handle a situation.

    In order to be eligible to run for SGA president you mustmeet the required GPA level and have served in the senatefor a minimum of 15 weeks. One ticket has been deemedinvalid because they have not served on senate and because

    of their GPA. Here lies the problem, Joeys ticket is valid andmeets all the requirements. There is a 3rd ticket that heknows about and a lot of people know that do not meet the15 week requirement. So far no one has said anything. Theelections commissioner is going by the idea you must haveserved 15 weeks by the time you are elected, but theconstitution clearly states that you must have served 15weeks to be a candidate.

    Joeys question is should they call the candidates on this andif so how do they go about not looking like they are petty andjust doing what is good for his ticket. Joey feels that he isright and the way he sees it, if they are going to say one isnot eligible than why let the other candidate run when theydon't meet the requirements?

    Case #2: Executive Issues

    Veronica is the current SGA Presidentand she comes to see you. I cant seemto get along with my vice president. Hesalways acting up and speaking against

    me during various campus meetings. Attimes, he thinks that hes the president!Im not sure what to do, but this isgetting out of hand. Last week we satthrough a meeting with the provost and

    we couldnt agree on a thing. I think theadministration is going to start notlistening to us. What should I do? Whatis your response as her Advisor?

    Case #3: Council Issues

    Anthony is currently the SGA vice president andhe has the responsibility to chair the senate. Thisyear, as in most years in the recent past, theSGA Senate is dominated by students from ourethnic student organizations and members of

    fraternities and sororities. He is worried that thisyear, after a highly contentious election last year,that the Greeks and the students of color aregoing to do political battle all year. He comes toyou seeking your advice. He wants to know if youhave any strategies on how to improve the

    working relationships between the Greeks andthe ethnic minority student senators?

    Case #4: Retreat Planning

    Your current SGA is planning a mid-yearretreat to regroup and move forward.They have had to fill quite a few vacantpositions and need time to get on thesame page. It is the beginning of

    October and this group has all but stalledin getting work accomplished. With acouncil that is at 80% capacity they haveno real sense of direction. The ExecutiveCouncil is frustrated and feel as if they

    are wasting their time. As their currentAdvisor, what are your programmaticsuggestions for a two-day retreat for asmall group of 13-15 people?

    Case #5: Financial Impropriety

    Stephanie is a junior and serves as theComptroller (Finance Chair) for the current SGA.She has been in this position for two years andhas earned the respect of her fellow constituents.As far as you know there have never been anyissues with the spending of the budget.

    Bob, a Freshman Intern and a non votingmember of the Finance Committee, comes to seeyou with some concerns about an occurrence inthe last Finance meeting. An allocation waspresented by an organization, one that Stephanie

    has strong affiliation with. Stephanie agreed toallocate funding to this organization even thoughthe program has no direct benefit for the generalstudent body. He is very upset with this decisionbut doesnt want you to say anything.
