Student-Centeredness Defined
"...ways of thinking and learning that
emphasize student responsibility and
activity in learning rather than what the
teachers are doing. Essentially SCL has
student responsibility and activity at its
heart, in contrast to a strong emphasis on
teacher control and coverage of academic
content in much conventional, didactic
teaching" (Cannon & Newble, 2000, as
cited in Lea, Stephenson & Troy, 2003, p.
321).
"...shift in power from the expert teacher
to the student learner, driven by a need for
a change in the traditional environment
where in this ‘so-called educational
atmosphere, students become passive,
apathetic and bored’" (Rogers, 1983, as
cited in O'Neill & McMahon, 2005, p.
27).
Tenets of Student-Centeredness Student-Centeredness Defined cont...
."...the idea that the teacher should not
‘interfere with this process of maturation, but
act as a guide’ " (Simon, 1999, as cited in
O'Neill & McMahon, 2005, p. 27).
"...that knowledge is constructed by students
and that the lecturer is a facilitator of learning
rather than a presenter of
information" (Kember, 1997, as cited in O'Neill
& McMahon, 2005, p. 28)
"...‘students might not only choose what to
study, but how and why that topic might be an
interesting one to study’" (Burnard, 1999, as
cited in O'Neill & McMahon, 2005, p. 28)
"...focusing on the students’ learning and ‘what
students do to achieve this, rather than what the
teacher does’" (Harden & Crosby, 2000, as
cited in O'Neill & McMahon, 2005, p. 28)
