Nature vocabulary: a flower, a tree, a cloud, a puddle, flowers, trees, clouds, puddles

Home study activityTake a walk outside with your child in your garden or at the park. Count the flowers, trees, clouds, etc. Play a game and see who can answer first using the question How many flowers are there?. While outside, also encourage your child to practice identifying the colors of the flowers and other things you see. When you get home, have your child find school objects and toys around the house to count and identify.

Listen and do verbs: Put the baseball on the table. Put the bat by the baseball. Put the baseball in the bag. Put the bag under the tree.

Home study activityHave your child find some school things, toys and a bag at home. Put these items in/on/under/by the bag. Ask your child, Where’s the (book)? or Where are the (balls)? and have him/her answer, It’s in the bag. or They’re by the bag. Reverse roles and have your child ask the questions. Play a game with instructions. Give your child a series of commands: Pick up the (pencil). Put the (pencil) (under the table). Then put the (pencil) (on the book). Now put the (pencil) by the (bed). Take turns giving instructions.

Home study activityHave your child practice saying the short I phonics words with you. Listen to the Student Audio CD with your child to practice the correct pronunciation of each word, blending the sounds (b + i + g) in the words. Then ask your child to say the The Ii Phonics Chant along with the audio. You may want to repeat it several times together. Invite your child to read the Little Book In the Snow.

Encourage your child to draw picture stories of his or her own using the phonics words.

Home study activityHave your child walk around your home and find toys that are old, new, big, small, long, or short. Then play a game with your child. Choose a toy and hide it behind your back. Have your child guess the toy by asking questions: Is it (big)? Is it (round)? Is it (red)? You answer each question, saying Yes, it is. or No, it isn’t. When your child finally guesses by correctly asking Is it a (ball)?, you answer Yes, it is. Then show him or her the toy. Switch roles and you ask your child the questions and guess the toy.
