The administrators of the educational institutions are concerned about the regularity of the attendance of students. The overall academic performance of students is largely affected by the presence of students in the institution. Two conventional methods of attendance are followed. One is by taking out the names of the students and other by taking student sign of a paper. Gone are the days when they were followed because not only were they inefficient, but also they were highly time consuming. As a result, the need was felt for a computer generated system that will assist the faculty in maintaining the attendance of the students. Hence, the student attendance system was introduced.
Different Types Of Attendance Management System:
Till date, several types of attendance management system have been introduced, and each of these serves a different purpose in different ways.
1 Computerized Attendance System-
This system could eliminate any kind of human involvement. As a result, it played a great role in eliminating manual errors, repetitive work and even time. The system also helped increase productivity along with reducing payroll inflation, overtime and retirement of legacy systems. In addition to that, it also eliminated the costs of paper and it could provide all the necessary reports on demand. However, the faculty has to take attendance manually and those records are entered into the computer system. However, in the course of time, some data entry errors were recognized.
2 Bluetooth based attendance system-
Another system was proposed that could take attendance with the use of Bluetooth. Attendance can be taken using the mobile phone of the instructor once software application is installed into the phone. This in turn enabled it to query the mobile of the students via Bluetooth and by means of the transfer of the telephone Media Access Control of the students. However, the major problem with this system was that every student required to have their phones. Moreover, when a student is absent, his mobile could be given to anyone else for attendance.
3 NFC Based attendance system-
The NFC based applications could simplify several human tasks on a regular basis by touching an object with NFC tag. In this context, SmartTouch is one of the early projects that focuses on this technology. It was proposed that the technology be used in the student attendance system in a multiuser environment. It used fingerprints as well as the Bluetooth address of the NFC enabled phone to authenticate the identity of the user. However, in this case, students required to have NFC enabled phone for marking their presence in the classroom.
4 Fingerprint based attendance system–
A fingerprint device was designed for attendance. The students mark their presence by touching their fingers on the sensor of the device. It comes up as one of the most popular and cost efficient way of recording attendance. It is reliable as everyone has unique finger print.The Finger Print Attendance system is tamper proof, hence comes up as completely safe.
