Impact of the IssueCampus Centers help provide opportunities for

students to spend time on campus and interact with others.

Studies have shown that student involvement is critical to success and engagement.

Campus Centers are often among the first buildings introduced to new students, so positive association to the building is imperative.

Impact of the IssueTraditional, undergraduate students tend to receive

the majority of resources and attention.

The campus center is a good place for graduate students or commuter and other non-traditional students to go to receive important information and resources.

Providing a home on campus for all students is essential, and the campus center must work to serve a diverse student population.

Viewpoints:Administrators

Campus centers are not just a place for students to meet and hangout, but it is also a place where faculty, administrators and trustees could meet for meetings and events.

Students must remember that it is called a “Campus center” not a “student center”

Want the campus center to be intended to both create a campus crossroads, among students and others on campus, and to bring a variety of student services together under one roof.

Based on the findings SDSU:

Planned for a new center that would meet green certification

Gained student support to pass a fee referendum to cover the cost of the center

Ultimately, included everyone in the entire decision making process

Evaluation

Kvale’s (2007) expertise reminds us of the significance that group dynamics can have on focus groups results.

Power dynamics: can give some the opportunity to dominate the conversation

Chain of command can silence some: those in lower levels in the chain of command may withhold their true opinions out of intimidation or fear of losing their job

EvaluationLooking through Bolman & Deal’s (2003) Political

Frame:As leaders we must “influence behavior to change the

course of events, to overcome resistance, and to get people to do things they would not otherwise do” (Pfeffer, 1992, p. 30).
