Homeless Outreach

DBS check required? Yes.

Brief description: Student

leaders go out onto the

streets in pairs to engage with

homeless people, with the aim of

signposting them into services which can offer specialist,

long-term support. They record all interactions with people, following

these up with services and other volunteers. This year we are working in

partnership with local charity Mancunian Way, which runs a very similar

project called Change4Good.

When does the project run? We will advertise new opportunities when they

become available on the Volunteer Hub. Volunteers are required to make a

weekly commitment of around three hours. This includes going out onto the

street, recording and sharing information, and following actions up with

services and other volunteers.

Women’s Projects

DBS check required? Yes.

Brief Description: For several years, student

leaders and volunteers have been going

along to a local women’s shelter/temporary

accommodation centre to cook for the

women staying there. However, the centre

will closed from July 22nd 2016 for six months

for a refurb.

In light of this, a new SA project is being

set up at the Burkhart Centre in

Fallowfield, which is a community centre

joined to supported housing for women who have

mental health issues.

The hope is that both projects will run after Christmas, when the shelter

reopens.

When does the project run? We will advertise new opportunities when they

become available on the Volunteer Hub. Project Leaders are required to

make a weekly commitment of 2 – 3 hours. Sessions will run during the day –

afternoons.

DBS check required? No.

Brief Description: Volunteers go

weekly to a church in

Stockport, to deliver English

language sessions for asylum

seekers and refugees. The club

is a drop-in service so the

attendees vary weekly, and

their abilities are very mixed.

The club is run in partnership

with STAR (Student Action for

Refugees) who run ongoing

training for project leaders and volunteers.

When does the project run? We will advertise new opportunities when they

become available on the Volunteer Hub. Project Leaders are required to

make a weekly commitment for 2 hours on a Saturday.

When does the project run? We will advertise new opportunities when they

become available on the Volunteer Hub. Weekly commitment required.

Intergenerational Projects – Parties & Film

Afternoons

DBS check required? Yes for Project Leaders, no for volunteers.

Brief Description: Project Leaders organise themed parties 4 times per year in

the SU bar, with the help of around 15 additional volunteers on the day.

Approximately 60 older people usually attend and the event runs from 12 –

4pm.

Film afternoons happen monthly. These

happen in SU meeting rooms and

usually 15 – 30 guests will attend.

When does the project run? We will

advertise new opportunities when

they become available on the

Volunteer Hub. Parties run 4 times per

year – Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s

Day and Spring Fling. Film afternoons happen

around once per month.

Incredible Edible

DBS check required? No.

Brief Description: Project Leaders and volunteers

look after two community gardens in Fallowfield,

growing fruit and veg which any members of the

public are allowed to take from the plots. It is a

council scheme to make use of disused land,

which SA started a branch of this year.

When does the project run? We will advertise new

opportunities when they become available on the

Volunteer Hub. Project Leaders work out between

themselves when they are going to tend the plots

and create a timetable.

Useful contacts:

o Environmental Projects Coordinator, Jenny Jackson:

9

Biko Bikes

DBS check required? No.

Brief Description: Volunteers identify

‘left’ bikes around campus, then do

them up in their workshop and rent

them out to students for £1 per week.

When does the project run? We will

advertise new opportunities when

they become available on the

Volunteer Hub. New opening times

will be set for September.

The Closet

DBS check required? No.

Brief Description: The Closet is a

student-run charity shop, based in the

building in between the SU and

Academy 1 (Room 9 and 3/4.) All

proceeds go to Mind mental health

charity.

The Closet has run some very

successful events in the past year, most notably their Missguided x The Closet

sample sale – through selling clothes donated by Missguided (and some

brilliant advertising) the shop raised over £10,000 for Mind in five days.

When does the project run? We will advertise new opportunities when they

become available on the Volunteer Hub. Opening times and events info can

be found on their Facebook page.

Breakout

DBS check required? Yes.

Brief Description: Breakout is a 3

– 5 day activities club for around

ten children aged 8 – 11 from a

local Primary School. Volunteers

plan activities; this year these

included visiting MOSI, playing

games at the SU, going to SeaLife, the Zoo and

Lazer Quest.

Breakout is really special for the kids who come along. For many of them it is a

holiday, during which they get to do lots of things they might not usually get

to do.

When does the project run? We will advertise new opportunities when they

become available on the Volunteer Hub. Usually during Easter break, at a

point where school and uni breaks cross over.

Useful contacts:

o Children and Young People Projects Coordinator and Breakout PL,

Andreea Avramescu: [email protected].

Time of the Month Campaign

DBS check required? No

Brief description: TOTM aims to raise

awareness of the fact that sanitary

products are expensive and therefore

often inaccessible for women who are

homeless. There is a collection bin in the

SU foyer for people to donate sanitary

products. Last year a lot of fundraising for

women’s charities happened, mainly

through selling themed cupcakes.

Useful contacts:

o Message the Facebook page for more info.

Minibus Drivers

depending on the project.

Brief Description: Volunteer

minibus drivers are crucial for

many of our projects to run. If you

are aged 21 or older and have

held a UK drivers licence for 2 or

more years, you’re eligible to

complete a short minibus

assessment to become a

volunteer minibus driver.

When does the project run? We will advertise new opportunities when they

become available on the Volunteer Hub. Project dependent, this can be a

one off or regular commitment.
