STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
2 WelcomeAccommodation is a top priority for many students progressing to higher education. Whether you are coming from afar to University Centre Weston or already live locally and want to experience living with other students, there are lots of options for accommodation in Weston-super-Mare.
We encourage students to live in our halls of residence as it is the best way to meet fellow students and make new friends. The accommodation we provide with our property partner has a rental period of 48 weeks of the year, which is ideal for most students, and the buildings have also been refurbished with the student living experience in mind.
The UCW Higher Education Academic Registry Team (HEART) provide a friendly and helpful accommodation service, and handle the applications for our student properties and allocate the rooms in the halls.
HEART also organise house meetings to make sure that everyone in our student accommodation enjoys a comfortable and secure living environment, and arrange for our Freshers’ Angels to welcome students to their new home. HEART are also there throughout the year for any accommodation-related problems, and aim to make moving and living away from home as stress-free as possible.
HEART know Weston and the surrounding area really well, so they are also able to advise on the options for those who wish to rent privately, and can put you in touch with preferred landlords who are experienced in renting to students of all ages.
The information on the following pages will help you decide whether UCW’s halls of residence are right for you and, if so, which property would be your preferred choice. Please do not hesitate to get in touch should you require any further information to help you make up your mind.

It’s called ‘super’ for a reasonWeston is best-known for its sprawling sandy beach and famous Grand Pier. It has miles of beaches, dunes and rock pools, and all the sand and water sports you’d expect from a seaside destination. So summer’s sorted! Whatever the weather, though, Weston has loads to keep you busy, including two theatres, a cinema, museums and galleries, go-karting, a big wheel, laser quest, golf courses, sports and leisure centres, nature reserves, adventure parks, spas, an aquarium, a swimming pool, amusement arcades and so much more…
The town itself is well-served for supermarkets and high street stores, and there are also lots of specialist shops and boutiques, especially in the Meadow Street ‘Lanes’ part of town. It has a thriving nightlife with lots of bars, clubs and live music venues, and foodies will love the range of cafes, fast-food outlets and restaurants in Weston offering a range of cuisines to suit all budgets.
Weston also hosts loads of events throughout the year, including the Winter Carnival, Air Festival, Sand Sculpture Festival, Pride and one of the top beach motorbike races in Europe.
Weston is small enough to feel welcoming while also being big on things to do. It combines traditional seaside fun with modern amenities and really does offer something for everyone.
About Weston-super-Mare
Bristol and Bath and further afieldLocated in the stunning South West of England, Weston is geographically blessed. It is very close to the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and some of the best rural and coastal scenery in Britain, with Exmoor and Dartmoor and Devon and Cornwall just down the road.
Somerset’s other well-known attractions include Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Tor, the Clarks Village designer outlet shopping centre in Street, and the gorgeous Cheddar Gorge and Quantock Hills.
Bristol, considered one of the best cities in the UK, is easily reached from Weston by rail and road. It really is a place to suit every taste, and is known for its diversity, live music scene, galleries, parks and festivals. Its international airport also offers flights across the UK and to Europe and beyond.
England’s only World Heritage city, Bath, is also near to Weston. The historic, compact city is a favourite with visitors due to its beautiful stone buildings, cobblestoned streets and the world famous Roman Baths. Bath is next to the county of Wiltshire, which is home to Stonehenge - one of the wonders of the world and Europe’s best known prehistoric monument.

14 How to apply
Accommodation in UCW halls of residences is usually allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, although applications from those who are new to the area or who pick us as their ‘firm’ choice via UCAS will be prioritised.
We send out our application forms to all students who have accepted an offer with us in the springtime. Students who want to live in one of our properties will need to complete the form and return it to us with a deposit cheque made payable to Skylight Property - our accommodation partner. Applicants will then receive confirmation that we have received their application and deposit.
The deposit cheque will be cashed at the end of August and returned once a student has moved out and it has been confirmed that the property is in the same condition as when they moved in, following an inspection of their bedroom and all the communal areas. Those who withdraw from their course less than two weeks before the start of term will lose their accommodation deposit.
When our properties are full and we are unable to accommodate any more students, we can work with unsuccessful applicants to help them meet other students in a similar situation to find a property with our accommodation partner or preferred landlords. In this situation, rent will be comparable with a standard room in our halls of residences and be on similar terms, so inclusive of bills and with rent paid in three instalments.
There are plenty of options for accommodation in Weston, but as some properties are more popular than others we encourage students to apply early!
When will I find out the result of my application? We allocate student accommodation during the summer months and aim to complete the process by the end of August once results have been confirmed.
What if I require accommodation but miss the deadline?Don’t worry! HEART can help you find private accommodation that suits your needs.
What if I don’t get the results I need?UCW will endeavour to help you should you not get the results you were expecting. If, however, we do have to withdraw our offer, we will return your accommodation deposit cheque.

15Conditions of offer
1 University Centre Weston will endeavor to offer student accommodation to all full-time applicants through UCAS for their first year of study, provided that the applicant:
• Accepts an offer of a place at University Centre Weston
• Requires the accommodation for a full letting period for single occupancy
• Pays the requested deposit
2 Applications for student accommodation are generally processed in the order that they are received. Completing the booking form and providing the deposit cheque early may therefore help an applicant secure their preferred accommodation. Allocation of preferred choices cannot be guaranteed. University Centre Weston also reserves a limited number of places to be allocated at its discretion.
3 University Centre Weston reserves the right to withdraw an offer of accommodation if the applicant fails to meet admission requirements or if a programme is withdrawn.
4 University Centre Weston is unable to provide accommodation for students’ partners, their families or other dependents, or for students at associated institutions. However our accommodation partner or preferred landlords may be able to help.
5 University Centre Weston has absolute discretion to make the final decision about which accommodation will be offered to which student.
Finance & contractIf you are offered accommodation you will be asked to sign a contract upon arrival. This will be sent to you in advance as it is legally binding and sets out the terms and conditions of your residency.
Please read the contract thoroughly before signing it so that you are clear in what is expected of you and what you can expect from your landlord.
The following, while not being exhaustive, is intended as an overview of some of the main points of the contract:
• The contract runs for 48 weeks, including the Christmas and Easter breaks.
• Those who leave their accommodation before the end of the contracted period are still liable to pay rent until a replacement tenant has signed a contract for the room.
• Guests are not permitted to stay at the accommodation without the permission of the landlord. Requests must be put in writing with a minimum of 48 hours’ notice.
• Tenants are responsible for ensuring their own room and communal areas are kept tidy and that rubbish and recycling are put out on the appropriate days.
• Tenants will need to provide a guarantor when signing their contract, which will usually be their parent/guardian.
16 Getting to UCW
By bike There are lots of benefits to coming to UCW by bike, including:
• Saving money on fuel
• Keeping fit and healthy
• Avoiding traffic jams
• Reducing carbon emissions, which is good for the environment.
We are keen for students to cycle, so we have plenty of cycle racks - please feel free to use them!

You can also use your pass to travel to and from work experience placements. We work closely with First Bus to make sure we have a bus service that covers all our campuses.
Most of our students travel easily to UCW on First Buses from across the region using either services dedicated to us or on timetabled routes.
There are frequent buses from within the Weston area, as well as direct buses from Bath, Bristol, Clevedon, Nailsea, Portishead, Burnham-on-Sea, Wells, Bridgwater and the surrounding areas.
