    ABOUT NITK

NITK Surathkal is a premier institution engaged in

imparting quality technological education andproviding support to research and developmentactivities. NITK is recognized as an Institute ofNational Importance by an act of Parliament. NITKhas carved a niche for itself among the best technicalinstitutes in India. NITK offers 9 UG, 26 PG and PhDprogrammes.

NITK is an institution which defines and continues toupdate and evolve methods of engineering andtechnology in India. It provides its students withmodern educational facilities while retaining traditionalvalues, as well as using its strong industrial contacts

to mould young, talented individuals who cancompete in the global arena. The aim of NITK is torank among leading universities globally.Consequently, NITK s mission is to educateindividuals to be competitive not only in India, but allover the world. Within an intensely competitiveenvironment, the institute has adopted a dynamic, global, high-quality; creative and communicativeapproach in education, as well as research anddevelopment.

Keeping abreast with modern developments, NITK isconstantly restructuring itself and renovating its

physical infrastructure as well as its research andeducation facilities.

Department of Electronics & Comm.Engineering & Department of Physics

The Department of Electronics & CommunicationEngineering has state-of-art laboratories in thevarious disciplines such as RF, VLSI, DSP, WirelessSensor Networks and advanced areas such as FreeSpace Optical Communications and RF MEMS. Thethrust areas of the department are Signal Processing,Communication Engineering, VLSI, Wireless SensorNetworks and Optical communication. Faculty of thedepartment are involved in conducting research inthe above-mentioned areas and several papers havebeen published in National and InternationalConferences/Journals. Department of Physicsoffers quality education in the field of Physics bothat UG as well as PG level and it is also aresearch center to pursue PhD degree. Thedepartment is equipped with different laboratoriessuch as, Thin Film lab, Nanomaterials and CrystalGrowth Lab, Material Processing Lab, Material

Research lab, Computational Laboratory, etc. TheR&D activities have gained momentum with fundingfrom various agencies like DST, ISRO, DIT,

    ADA, MHRD etc.

Ever-increasing demand for bandwidth and rapidadvances in silicon technology underpinned byMoores la w are creating a major transformation inoptical fiber communications, fuelling thedevelopment of photonic devices, networkcomponents, and communication technology.Optoelectronics and optical communication is playingan important role in telecommunication, medicine, andcomputing area. Optical communication is becomingmore prevalent because of its wide range ofapplications in almost every field. This course istargeted at discussing the recent trends inoptoelectronic devices and optical communicationtechnology, thereby providing a holistic view of thefrontier areas of optical communication andnetworking. Topics related to fiber optics, opticalsources, optical detection, optical sensors, siliconphotonic devices, optical communication andnetworking will be covered in this course. This FDPidentifies pedagogy for teaching these concepts andconducting laboratory exercises. Detailed informationon optoelectronics devices and optical communication

along with some of the salient scopes including the

present and futuristic R&D to young and establishedteachers/researchers/engineers will be provided.

Lectures by invited speakers from R & D, Industry andpremier Institutions with long standing experience onthe subject will be arranged including Prof. AjoyGhatak and Prof. Tyagarajan, IIT Delhi, Prof. R KSinha, DTU, Delhi, Prof. T Srinivas, IISC, Bangalore.

There is no registration fee. However theparticipants will be provided accommodation basedon availability at the NITK hostels on the basis ofearly registration. Working lunch, tea and snacks willbe provided.

    HOW TO REACH NITK

The Institute is located 22 kilometers north ofMangalore City along the Mumbai to ErnakulumNational Highway 66(NH-17), amid 300 acres of

sylvan surrounding with the picturesque WesternGhats on the east and sun-kissed sands of the Arabian Sea to the west. Mangalore is also connectedby NH 48 to Bangalore and there are a number ofluxury buses plying daily between Mangalore andBangalore all through the day.

Surathkal, on the Konkan Railway (linking Mumbai toMangalore), is the nearest railway station and is astopover for most trains passing through KonkanRailway. While Surathkal and Mangalore Junction arethe closest alighting points for visitors coming by trainfrom the North; Mangalore Central is the Terminus for

many trains from South India. The Mangalore airportis just 20 km from the campus.
