Descriptions of STAAR MASTER®Complexity Levels

The following descriptions provide an overview of thethree complexity levels used to align the STAARMASTER® Student Practice Book items to the eligible ELA-R TEKS. Each explanation details the kinds of activitiesthat occur within each level. However, they do not represent all of the possible thought processes foreach level.

Low Complexity (L)Low-complexity items align with the TEKS at Level 1 ofthe Webb (2002a) model. Items of low complexity mayinvolve recalling—but not analyzing—story events andother basic elements of a text structure. An item may askstudents to recognize or reproduce—but not interpret—figurative language. Items of this complexity may requireidentifying the meaning of a word through languagestructure or word relationships. At this cognitive level, students may need to locate details in a chart, graph, or diagram. A low-complexity item may ask students to recall, identify, arrange, locate, or define informationand concepts.

Moderate Complexity (M)Moderate-complexity items align with the TEKS at Level 2 of the Webb model. Items of moderatecomplexity involve both comprehension and thesubsequent processing of text. Students are asked to make inferences and identify cause-and-effectrelationships. However, students are not required to go beyond the text. Major concepts, such as main idea, areconsidered in a literal, rather than abstract, manner.Students are asked to compare word meanings, which theydetermine through context clues. At this cognitive level, students will need to identify similarities and differences.Items may involve determining information in a textfeature, such as a chart, graph, or diagram. Items of thiscomplexity may ask students to predict, organize, classify, compare, interpret, distinguish, relate, or summarize. Some items also require students to apply low-complexityskills and concepts.

High Complexity (H)High-complexity items align with the TEKS at Level 3and/or Level 4 of the Webb model*. Items of highcomplexity require students to use strategic, multi-stepthinking; develop a deeper understanding of the text; andextend thinking beyond the text. Major concepts, such astheme and figurative language, are now identified andexamined in an abstract manner. Students are asked todemonstrate more flexible thinking, apply priorknowledge, and support their responses. Students mayneed to generalize and transfer new information to newtasks. High-complexity items may require students tomake inferences across an entire passage or analyzerelationships between ideas or texts. At this cognitive level, students will need to analyze similarities and differences.Items may involve relating information in a text feature, such as a chart, graph, or diagram, to the text. A high-complexity item may ask students to plan, reason, explain, hypothesize, compare, differentiate, draw conclusions, citeevidence, analyze, synthesize, apply, or prove. Some itemsalso require students to apply low- and/or moderate-complexity skills and concepts.

*Note: Although state standards may include expectationsthat require extended thinking, many large-scaleassessment activities are not classified as Level 4.Performance and open-ended assessment may requireactivities at Level 4.

What materials do you use for

art projects? Crayons, paper, glue,

paint, pipe cleaners, and scissors, right?

Junkyard artists add more supplies to

the list: wire, scrap metal, tools,

springs, and other things that most

people throw away. These artists take

trash and turn it into art. Junkyard

artists are probably the most creative

artists of all.

Think about it. Suppose you want

to create a tail for a dog sculpture you

have made from clay. You could use a

pipe cleaner. Or, you could use an old

drill bit that your dad threw away

because it was bent.

Look for ways to create something

new from something old. A comb with

broken teeth might become the mouth

for a clown. A clean, empty soup can

may become the body of a car or a

lion. Old rubber gloves could become

the lion’s mane. You can use anything

that is no longer useful. To you, it can

be useful!

You can even use junkyard trash to

organize your new art materials. Store

leftover floor tiles in plastic bread bags.

Empty crayon boxes can hold broken

jewelry. Shoeboxes and clothing boxes

are great for larger items. Old suitcases

can hold large items as well.

Just remember to be safe with your

junkyard art. Many metal or glass

items can be sharp. Leave those alone.

Some items may have leftover food

in them. Make sure you wash and

dry items before you begin your art

project. If you’re not sure if the junk

is safe, ask an adult to help you.

Some artists turn this hobby into

a job, or profession. When they look

through junkyards, they see with new

eyes. They attach small pieces of junk

to larger pieces of junk. They wrap

wire to connect one item to another.

They use marbles for feet and hubcaps

for bodies. These artists can turn trash

into treasure, no matter how big or

how small. Can you?

The Train Glistened

The following poem is a villanelle—a 19-line poem, originally French, that uses only two rhymes and consists of five three-line stanzas andone four-line stanza. The first and third lines of the first stanza arealternately repeated as a refrain that closes the following stanzas. These lines are then joined as the final two lines of the poem.

One nervous and one calm, we waited on the train. From a great distance, rumbling afar, we heard its whistle shout. The train, slender and sleek, glistened in the rain.

A door did open, a conductor stepped out with pocket-watch and cane.5 “All aboard, Chicago express!” he blared with mighty clout.

One nervous and one calm, we waited on the train.

To my surprise we found some stairs—a double-decker train! And cars for eating and for sleeping with windows blacked out.The train, slender and sleek, glistened in the rain.

10 The conductor appeared and checked his watch, hanging by a chain,A friendly sort with a pressed-blue suit, a mustache, short and stout. One nervous and one calm, we waited on the train.

He assured me the trip would gratify, no worries and no pain,And advised that I should sit right back, but I admit I had my doubts.

15 The train, slender and sleek, glistened in the rain.

But the conductor was right, we left right on time, and I began to like the train. The scenery seemed like a dream as we _ew through our beautiful route. One nervous and one calm, we waited on the train. The train, slender and sleek, glistened in the rain.

Volume Formulas

Base x Height

You already know that you can find the volume of a rectangular prism if you know the volume of onelayer and the total number of layers in the prism.

The first layer of the rectangular prism above has 16 unit cubes. The prism has 3 layers.

So, the volume of the prism is:

16 + 16 + 16 = 48 cubic units

OR

16 x 3 = 48 cubic units

When you multiply the number of unit cubes in the first layer by the total number of layers, you aremultiplying the base and the height.

Volume (V) = unit cubes in one layer x number of layers

OR

Volume (V) = base (B) x height (h)

A Tale of Two FrogsA Japanese Folk Tale

1 Once upon a time, two frogs lived in Japan. One frog, namedMomoka, lived near the city of Osaka. She enjoyed watching thecool waves wash up against the shore. From the ditch where shelived, she could see her city’s tall buildings. Still, Momokawondered what else she might see in the world.

2 The other frog lived many miles away. This frog, named Kai,lived near the city of Kyoto near a little stream. He liked to watchthe Vsh swimming by on lazy afternoons. When he looked up, hecould see his city’s tall buildings. Still, just like Momoka, Kai alwayswondered what else he might see in his country.

3 One morning, the birds chirped a happy song. The sun castshadows through the magnolia leaves. On that beautiful morning, both Momoka and Kai had the same idea at the same time. Eachfrog decided to travel to another city. Each frog wanted to seesomething new.

4 Momoka set out from Osaka to see Kyoto. Along the way, shefound many interesting things. She saw a peddler selling Wags andwatched the patterned fabric blowing in the ocean breeze. Shepassed a store that sold bicycles and admired all the colorful, painted machines. She continued along and soon heard the bellsclanging from a nearby town’s tower. Oh, what interesting sightsand sounds! she thought.

5 At the same time, Kai set out from Kyoto to Osaka. He also sawmany interesting things. He saw a crystal-blue lake and swaying, deep green grass. He hoppedthrough an old train tunnel. When Kai was hungry from allthe hopping, he stopped forsome fresh Vsh.

6 Momoka and Kai traveledthe same road that stretchedbetween the two cities, Osakaand Kyoto. So, it happenedthat they met high on amountain, midway betweenthe two cities.

Daylight Saving No More

1 What if the government told you that for half the year, one inch wasactually half an inch? What if government oWcials also said that for sixmonths, one pound was actually two pounds? Everything would be half as long and would weigh twice as much! The change would makemeasurement systems rather useless. Obviously, people should notYddle with measurements on a whim; however, people who supportDaylight Saving Time seem to think the opposite. They don’t realize that Daylight Saving Time actually wastes time and could even bedangerous.

2 Twice a year, most U.S. citizens adjust their clocks by one hour. In thespring, they set their clocks forward an hour. In the fall, they set themback an hour. The government says they must do this, so most peopledon’t question this practice. But, if you ask people directly, many believethat changing their clocks according to these rules is an outdatedpractice that should be eliminated. Changing a clock’s time doesn’t givepeople an extra hour, as some supporters claim. In fact, it makes manypeople feel robbed of one.

3 Daylight Saving Time was Yrst adopted during World War I and wasin place for just seven months. It was meant to save fuel by replacingartiYcial lighting used mostly at night. When the war ended, somecommunities continued Daylight Saving Time, but most did not. DuringWorld War II, the U.S. used Daylight Saving Time again to save fuel—butonly for a few years. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the practice was againadopted nationwide.

4 Congress has changed Daylight Saving Time many times, usuallysaying that the changes are energy-saving eVorts. The most recentchange was in 2007, when the government decided Daylight SavingTime should begin three weeks earlier than usual and end one weeklater. By the government’s estimate, four more weeks of Daylight SavingTime would save a great deal of energy.

Past City of the Future

1 Seventy miles north of Phoenix, Arizona, the compact town of Arcosanti overlooks adesert valley peppered with juniper trees andprickly-pear cacti. Designed by accomplishedItalian architect Paolo Soleri, Arcosanti wasonce billed as “the city of the future.” Locatedon hundreds of acres near a river, the town wasintended to one day support a population of5,000. Today this “urban laboratory,” underconstruction since 1970, is home to fewer than100 people.

Basic Principles

2 Though Arcosanti has a pool, anamphitheater, and other expected comforts, the town is unusual in that it is designedaround the idea of “arcology.” You won’t \ndthe word arcology in a dictionary, though; it isa term coined by Soleri to describe architecturethat exists in harmony with its surroundings. In other words, arcology is about limiting theimpact of manmade structures—roads, businesses, homes—on the naturalenvironment. Soleri’s aim was to reduce waste, pollution, and the use of energy and rawmaterials like trees and water.

3 Even though Arcosanti was meant toreduce human impact on nature, the goal wasnot to separate humans from nature. In fact, itwas quite the opposite. One of Soleri’s aimswas to create a city that increased humaninteraction with nature by giving people easieraccess to the natural environment. This is whyArcosanti is situated in the midst of protectedwilderness. Those who live in Arcosanti (called“Arconauts”) can experience nature by simplywalking outside. The living, working, and

public spaces of the town are set fairly close toeach other, making walking a viable form oftransportation. Only a small portion ofArcosanti is dedicated to roads.

A Growing Community

4 Arcosanti was speci\cally designed to beenergy-e[cient, with the majority of theenergy used being solar. Greenhouses captureenergy from the Sun, which supplies power forthe town’s daily functions. The greenhousesserve a dual purpose, as they are also usedto grow produce for human consumption.Residents of Arcosanti also tend to 14 acres ofgarden and \eld produce. “Test gardens” helpresidents decide whether a plant will ]ourishin Arcosanti’s climate. Each day, residentsparticipate in watering, weeding, harvesting, seeding, composting, and assisting withfarmers’ markets. Their painstaking eZortsallow residents to grow a large portion of theirfood locally.
