Strengths of the Fast Break

Reach your opponents key before their defence are set up, giving your forward an unopposed lay-up.

Strengths of the Fast Break

Transition from defence to attack at speed

Get ahead of defence Space to drive into, maintain speed Reach opponents key quickly Reach before defence set up Give forward an unopposed lay-up Forward best shooter Lay-up most successful shot

Why speed is important

•Speed is a vital element of the Fastbreak•Moving up the court quickly maximises the opportunity of numerical superiority.•Transitioning from defence to attack at speed enables you to reach the opposition key before they are able to set up a defence•Forces the opposition to make quick decisions as to who to mark, putting them under pressure leading to errors•Should be less pressure on our skill level & decision making as there are less/no defenders •If there are no defenders this gives an excellent opportunity to shoot and score an unopposed lay-up. Creating the opportunity for a lay-up is advantageous as it is taken close to the basket and therefore has a high success rate.

Why Width is important

•Width is created during the fast break by filling the wide lanes either side of the Point Guard. We can also use length by sending a centre ahead•Filling all three lanes gives defenders more space to cover by pulling them away from the middle of the court and away from the key. It also forces them to make a decision who to mark.•Forces the opposition to make quick decisions, puts them under pressure which may lead to errors i.e. marking wrong player•The space created is used by the PG to dribble up court at speed. Enabling us to transition from defence to attack at speed•The space in the key can be exploited by the C or F who can receive a pass and drive in to score an unopposed lay-up as they cut in from the left or right lane..•Filling all three lanes gives us more attack options as we can score from all three lanes.

Why variation is important

Filling all three lanes gives the PG more passing options and us more attack options as we can score from all three lanes.

Variation is therefore vital element of the Fastbreak.

Having a variety of options available to our point guard maximises chance of scoring an unopposed lay-up.

If the defence read our play and get back and set up the point guard is able to use a different option.

By having a variety of options available we can vary our attack, this will prevent it becoming predictable.

By being less predictable the defence are forced to make split second decisions

Pressurising the defences in this way causes confusion and indecision

Why creativity is important

Creativity is a vital element of our play its required during Fastbreak and Set Plays Creativity ensures we have a variety of options available to our point guard maximises chance of scoringProvides options during the fastbreak, by having a variety of options available we can vary our attack, this will prevent it becoming predictable.Within our set play we require creativity to create spaceWe use a mixture of V-Cuts, J-Cuts, Off the ball and On the ball screens to create spaceCreativity within our set play ensures we create space for a scoring opportunityBy being creative we force the defence to make split second decisionsPressurising the defences in this way causes confusion and indecision

Weakness within Fastbreak

Identified weakness

Problem / Weakness

Impact

WIDTH• Don’t fill all 3 lane

Less space in middle lane• Less space for PG• PG has to slow down

Defence in key• Less space to drive into for lay-up• No unopposed lay-up

Less Options for PG• FB becomes predictable• Defence know what’s going to

happen

SPEED• Skill level under

pressure• Pressure on

decision making

Defence able to get back• Defenders in key• Less space to drive into for lay-up• No unopposed lay-up• Resort to jump/set shot – lower %

scoredPressure on skill level

• Make errors – lose possession• Less time to think – poorer decisions• Slow down even more to avoid

errors / poor decisions

Homework

Due Monday 9th March

Task 1

1.Describe (remember to explain why) how you gathered data on your performance of a structure strategy or composition. (6)(Lesson 2 individual task and feedback will help)

Task 2

2.Pick two problems/weaknesses within your fastbreak. Explain in detail the impact of these two issues on your teams performance of the fastbreak (6)(Lesson 2 group task and why speed/width/variation will help)
