Structure Name: Sulby Bridge (SN 1019)

Location: Sulby

Description:

The Sulby River Bridge carries the A3 main road over the Sulby River. The structure is a steel

beam and concrete jack arch bridge seated on large concrete abutments. The paint system

applied to the steelwork is failing and there are large areas of rust showing on the beams.

Structure Name: Alfred Pier (SN 2367)

Location: Port St Mary Harbour

Description:

The Alfred Pier provides essential protection to Port St Mary harbour including shelter for fishing

boats, leisure craft and the RNLI lifeboat. The outer face requires extensive concrete repairs and

repairs to the wave return. The parapet has numerous areas of missing render and needs

refurbishing. The deck has cracks along its entire surface and needs replacing.

Proposed Works:-

Phase 1 (External face)

Provide a sprayed concrete surface to the entire outer face of the pier to give long term

strengthening and protection to the pier. This will include local repairs to the wave return and

parapet.

Phase 2 (Replacement deck)

Excavate approximately 2600m² of existing deck and replace in bays of reinforced concrete. This

is programmed to be split into four phases.

Structure Name: The Groyne (SN 2322)

Location: Peel Harbour

Description:

The Groyne at Peel harbour protects the foreshore from erosion and ensures that beach sand is

not lost through the process of longshore drift. The groyne is a concrete structure in poor repair

with large areas of undermining and some settlement evident and is in need of substantial

refurbishment.

Proposed Works:-

The groyne is to be partially reconstructed. The undermined areas are to be underpinned and

part of the deck is to be re-cast in new concrete.

undermined by erosion causing part of the wall to collapse. It is intended to reconstruct the stone

wall with precast concrete blocks.

Proposed Works:

Demolish existing wall and reconstruct in pre cast concrete blocks

Structure Name: Apostles Bridge & Duck Pond (SN 2399)

Location Castletown Harbour

Description:

Apostles Bridge is a public footbridge above a weir. The weir currently has three timber bungs in

place that can be removed to allow the upstream duck pond to be drained. Access to the bungs

is difficult and the bungs do not provide enough capacity to fully drain the duck pond. A more

suitable method of draining the pond is to be provided to enable dredging works to be easily

undertaken.

Proposed Works:-

Construct three new openings within the weir in more suitable locations with easily accessible

penstocks that are large enough to fully drain the pond. The pond will then be dredged of

unwanted material.

Structure Name: Port Erin Boat Park

Location Port Erin Harbour

Description:

The boat park currently has a very uneven surface with poor drainage and the paved walkways

and steps are also in poor condition.

Proposed Works:-

It is intended to improve the boat park by providing a more suitable surface with improved

drainage and better power and water facilities. The work will also include reconstructing the

damaged steps and footpaths and stabilisation works to an adjacent embankment.

Structure Name: Peveril Jetty (SN 2224)

Location: Adjacent Sea Terminal Building, Douglas

Description:

Peveril Jetty is a mass concrete jetty that is now in very poor repair. Although no longer in use it

does provide some protection from wave action to Douglas beach and as such should be

retained. The jetty has now become a dangerous structure and there is concern about children

swimming around it becoming trapped.

Proposed works:

It is proposed to reconstruct some of the steps on the structure and to fill in the large holes

within the deck and sides. An additional set of steps is to be constructed at the top of the

structure. These works are to ensure that anyone on or around the jetty is not harmed by a

collapse and will have an escape access if trapped by the tide.

12

Structure Name Patrick Road Retaining Wall (SN 5583)

Location St Johns

Description:

A Manx stone wall running along the River Neb and supporting the A30 highway. The wall has

recently failed causing the edge of the road to collapse.

Proposed works:

15

Structure Name Ronaldsway Slipway

Location Derbyhaven

Description:

The existing slipway at Derbyhaven is located at the end of the promenade and has shared use

by yacht owners and the airport emergency vehicles. Its orientation and location away from the

emergency vehicles exit at the airport is considered to be too far away and somewhat awkward

for use. It is proposed to construct a new slipway in a more suitable location and orientation

Proposed works:

Construct a new slipway directly opposite the emergency vehicle exit to provide a better beach

access for emergency vehicles.

19

Structure Name: Patrick Road Bridge (SN 1084)

Location: Patrick

Description

Patrick Road Bridge crosses the River Neb and has suffered from severe scour of its apron and

the side walls. A temporary repair was undertaken at the end of last year to halt further erosion

and now a permanent repair is required.

Proposed Works:

The large voids are to be backfilled with stone and a new reinforced concrete slab constructed to

span between the walls at bed level. The wing walls are to be protected by placing large pre-cast

concrete blocks against both the upstream and downstream embankments.
