RILEM, The International Union of Laboratories and Experts in ConstructionMaterials, Systems and Structures, founded in 1947, is a non-governmentalscientific association whose goal is to contribute to progress in the constructionsciences, techniques and industries, essentially by means of the communication itfosters between research and practice. RILEM’s focus is on construction materialsand their use in building and civil engineering structures, covering all phases of thebuilding process from manufacture to use and recycling of materials. Preface

SAHC 2018 was the eleventh edition of the very successful series of internationalconferences on structural analysis of historical constructions held at Barcelona(1995, 1998), Guimaraes (2001), Padova (2004), New Delhi (2006), Bath (2008),Shanghai (2010), Wroclaw (2012), Mexico City (2014), and Leuven (2016). Theseproceedings contain over 250 papers presented in the SAHC 2018 which was heldat Cusco, Peru, from September 11 to 13, 2018. The event was organized by thePontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP).

The main theme of the 11th International Conference on Structural Analysis ofHistorical Construction was “An Interdisciplinary Approach” to emphasize theimportance of the involvement of a wide variety of disciplines and professions inthe exciting, yet challenging, task of conserving and restoring heritage buildings. An interdisciplinary approach, with the participation of different areas of expertisefrom architecture to engineering, is essential to achieve a common understandingof the history, the material, the structure, the analysis, the intervention, and thecontrol that are needed when studying this type of buildings. In line with thisinterdisciplinary theme, the conference had four keynote lectures covering a widerange of disciplines to further highlight the importance of adopting a truly inter-disciplinary approach. The articles presented very interesting research and appli-cations on a wide variety of topics related to the different disciplines involved inconservation, retrofit, and management of historical and archeological construc-tions. Many of the papers received showcased important technological advances, and also uncovered new challenges in the field of structural analysis of historicaland archeological constructions.

The SAHC 2018 had a robust technical program focusing on topics important toprofessionals of the wide range of disciplines involved in heritage and historicalbuildings. The SAHC 2018 papers shown in this proceedings are organized in maintopics including: history of construction and building technology; new technologiesand techniques; inspection, non-destructive and laboratory testing; numericalmodeling and structural analysis; vulnerability and risk analysis regarding naturaland man-made hazards; seismic analysis and retrofit; repair and strengtheningtechniques; assessment and intervention of archeological heritage; durability and

sustainability; management of heritage structures and conservation strategies;structural health monitoring; and interdisciplinary projects and case studies.

On behalf of the organizing committee of the SAHC 2018, we thank the time, hard work, and effort of many people that helped with the organization andpreparation of the proceedings. This includes members of the advisory and scien-tific committees, research assistants at the Engineering and Heritage ResearchGroup at PUCP, volunteers, anonymous reviewers, and many others. Much of thesuccess of the conference reflected the dedication and hard work by these volun-teers. The organizing committee also deeply acknowledges the sponsorship ofprivate and governmental institutions who are key players in the challenge ofperforming engineering and innovation with high social impact.

We hope that you enjoy reading the SAHC 2018 conference proceedings.
