INTRODUCTION
OVERVIEW
This course is the next generation of the SAN Implementation Workshop course which
focuses on Windows Server 2008 R2, vSphere (ESX 5.0), and Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Server 6 Update 1. The exercise environment really requires 3 x86-64 servers. However, do
to the current exercise environment constraints we only have 1 x86-64 servers and so the
server will have to be rebuilt every night. The following table reflects this:
Day Platform Operating System
1 Server 1 Windows Server 2008 R2
2 Server 1 vSphere (ESX 5.0)
3 Server 1 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.1
EXPECTED QUALIFICATIONS
This document is written for instructors, course developers, and systems administrators who
are responsible for preparing learning labs and establishing instructor tasks that help ensure
that various lab components are appropriately prepared.
It is assumed that there is an appropriate level of expertise and some level of familiarity with
the installation and configuration of multiple operating systems, and that the individual can
perform a new installation of Data ONTAP®.
NOTE: This document does not cover deploying lab components: IP addressing, host names,
or machine specifics, except when specifically required to successfully set up a lab.
RECOMMENDED PREREQUISITES
It is helpful when setting up labs to have a basic understanding of Data ONTAP
fundamentals.
TERMINOLOGY
Application server―The hardware and software installed to perform a specific function;
the hardware can be either a stand-alone server or a hypervisor that emulates the
hardware
Application software―Software applications and services installed or enabled after the
operating system is installed; some examples include Microsoft® Exchange and
Microsoft Office, Systems Manager, and Putty
Host operating system (OS)―The primary operating system installed on the server
Storage network―Storage area network (SAN) and network-attached storage (NAS)

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS DIAGRAM
Kits
A kit is defined as: A set of systems that are used for two students or student groups within
the class.
For this course, a kit would consist of:
1 Windows 2008 R2 Server system used as Classroom workstation
1 initiator host (changes daily):
– 1 Windows 2008 R2 Server
– 1 ESXi 5.0 with access to a Windows Server with vCenter isntalled
– 1 RHEL 5.7
1 FAS storage system
– This storage system will be the HA partner for the another kit
– cfmode to be set to single image
All systems within the kit would have network connectivity to all other systems within
the kit
Connectivity between systems will be utilizing a standard Ethernet switch supporting
iSCSI traffic
Students will be connecting to the systems using an RDP connection from an unspecified
system (personal laptop, classroom host, etc)

DETAILED INSTALLATION STEPS
NETAPP STORAGE SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
STEP ACTION
1. Check connectivity from the Windows desktop to the storage system via:
OnCommand System Manager 2.0
Telnet
Console (Terminal Server for console connection is optional.)
Example:
To connect using OnCommand System Manager 2.0:
1. Launch System Manager
2. Discover the storage systems
3. Right-click on the discovered storage system and login to the controller
To connect from the Windows desktop to the storage system via telnet:
1. Open a CMD window on the student’s Windows desktop
2. Telnet to the IP address of the storage system
Example:
H:\>telnet [ip address or host name of storage system]
To connect from the Windows desktop to the storage system console port:
1. Open a CMD window on the student’s Windows desktop
2. Telnet to the ip address of the terminal server and the port of the storage
system
separate ip address and storage system port number with a space
Example:
H:\> telnet [console IP address of terminal server] <console port>
2. Set options:
At the command line of the storage system, ensure AutoSupport to administrators
and AutoSupport to NetApp is turned off.
Example: storage> options autosupport.enable off
storage> options autosupport.support.enable off
3. Down the 0c and 0d interfaces on Storage System 1 and 2: system> fcadmin config -d 0c 0d
system2> fcadmin config -d 0c 0d
4. Set 0c and 0d to initiators (if they are not already configured as initiators): system> fcadmin config -t initiator 0c 0d
system2> fcadmin config -t initiator 0c 0d
5. Enable the 0c and 0d interfaces on Storage System 1 and 2: system> fcadmin config -e 0c 0d
system2> fcadmin config -e 0c 0d
