care

based. "The little particles create micro-tearsin the skin, causing blotchy discoloration,"Dr. Gohara says.

TREAT THEMDitch harsh exfoliators, whichonly do more damage to the

skin. In the morning, wash with a foamingcleanser, like Simple Foaming FacialCleanser ($7, drugstores), and then smoothon an antioxidant-rich serum. We likeMario Badescu Vitamin C Serum ($45,mariobadescu.com). The best way toprevent spots—SPF!—is also crucial fortreating them. Reapplication is key.Dr. Gohara recommends keeping an easy-to-use mineral formula, like ColoreScienceSunForgettable Mineral SunscreenBrush SPF 30 ($52, colorescience.comfor locations), with you so that youcan apply it on the go. In the p.m., takeoff your makeup with Aveeno PositivelyRadiant Makeup Removing Wipes ($7,drugstores), which contain a soy complexto help fade spots. Wash with your cleanser, then use an effective lightening comboof retinol—try Vichy LiftActiv RetinolHA Concentrate ($55, vichyusa.com)and hydroquinone—we like Peter ThomasRoth De-Spot Plus ($78, Sephora stores). For a natural alternative to hydroqui-none, look for products with licorice root, coffee berry or daisy extracts. One welove: Hurt's Bees Brightening Dark SpotCorrector ($20, drugstores). Dr. Goharasuggests a two-month-on, two-month-offrotation when using hydroquinone, butsays to continue using retinol.

Break Free FromBreakouts"Acne is caused by a combination of severalfactors, including bacteria, inflammationand hormones," says Emmy Graber, M.D., anassistant professor of dermatology at BostonUniversity School of Medicine. "Adult acneis usually hormonal." These blemishes areoften along the jawline, around the mouthand chin, and on the upper part of the neck. Also, "sweat and bacteria left on the skinafter a workout can be a breeding ground forbreakouts," says Dendy Engelman, M.D., adermatologist in New York City.

PREVENT THEMStress may contribute to acne,so activities that help you chill

out—like your favorite cardio workoutor yoga—can help ward off zits. Buteven the few minutes it takes you to gethome and wash your face afterward canput you at risk for a breakout. Keep apack of salicylic acid face wipes, like Yesto Tomatoes Blemish Clearing FacialTowelettes ($6, drugstores), in your gymbag and do a quick pass over your skinpost-sweat session. Later, wash your facewith a cleanser that also contains salicylicacid. "It's an exfoliant, so it stops the poresfrom becoming clogged," Dr. Graber explains.Clearasil Daily Cleanser Hydra-BlastOil-Free Face Wash ($5, drugstores) doesthe job without drying out your skin.

The protein drink you sip after yourworkout might also lead to pimples ifit contains whey or casein, says WhitneyP. Bowe, M.D., a dermatologist in BriarcliffManor, New York. Common culprits:skim milk, which is higher in these twoingredients than full-fat dairy is, and proteinshakes made with whey or casein supple-ments. Dr. Bowe suggests drinking almondmilk instead. "Skim and whole milk havebeen associated with breakouts, but almondmilk hasn't," she says.

TREAT THEMIf you get acne, don't slather onproducts. "That can make

blemishes more noticeable and harder toconceal," Dr. Graber says. As temptingas it is, never pick or pop a pimple. Instead, after washing with a salicylic acid orbenzoyl peroxide cleanser, apply a 1 percenthydrocortisone cream, like Aveeno 1%Hydrocortisone Cream ($6, drugstores),to reduce redness and irritation. Don'tforget sun protection—UV rays can makethe marks left by acne linger longer. Onethat protects without clogging pores:Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen SPF30 ($11, drugstores). Before bed, use asalicylic acid spot treatment. Try CliniqueAcne Solutions Clinical Clearing Gel($17, clinique.com) or opt for one withacne-fighting lactic acid, like Orgo LacticAcid Blemish Spot Treatment ($32,beautycirque.com). •
