Focus Reading Connection: #6 Text Features

To be able to demonstrate the use of the following nonfiction text features: web, title. Readers use the features of nonfiction text to help find information about the topic they are interested in. When talking to students about the features of nonfiction text it is important to emphasize that:

1. Nonfiction text features help to make the important information easier to find.2. Nonfiction text features usually highlight the most important pieces of information.

Some Common Nonfiction Text Features:labels, bold words, title, headings, charts, table of contents, fact boxes, photographs, index, captions italics, diagrams, maps, glossary, illustrations, graphs, webs, speech bubbles.

This lesson uses structured partner talk as a learning strategy. To learn more about partner talk please refer to the Educator’s page on our website.

This book is part of the Exploring the World of ....nature series. Full colour photographs, a variety of nonfiction text features and highly readable text make this book an engaging source of information about coyotes.

Note: If you do not have multiple copies of this book available you could guide your students through this lesson by reading the information orally or reading it together with the help of an Elmo.

before• This lesson requires that you have already taught your students the difference between fiction and nonfiction text (comparing fiction and nonfiction books on the same topic is one way to do this).• Have each student turn to a predetermined partner. Have them brainstom what they remember about the following features of nonfiction text: web, title.• Have some of the students report out to the larger group. Responses might include: (web: a way to organize information) (title: the name of a book, movie, report, web etc.).

during• Remind your students that a web is one way to organize information about a topic.• Explain to your students that today they will be collecting information about coyotes and organizing the facts on a web.• Have the students work individually, or in pairs, to use the table of contents to locate the section of the book that describes the coyote’s anatomy.• Have the students read through the information in that part of the book. Encourage them to not only read the text but to look at the pictures, read the captions,the sidebars and to take a close look at the labeled diagram.• Have each student turn to the same partner and share two facts that they have learned about the anatomy of a coyote.• Distribute a text feature worksheet to each student.• Have the students take turns reporting out one fact about the anatomy of the coyote to the class.• Using the chalkboard, model recording the students’ information on a web.• Using the worksheet, have the students record the information on their own webs.

• Have the students work in pairs to repeat this process. Have them record facts about another aspect of the coyote’s life cycle or habits.
