Background
Strømme Foundation is a Norwegian based international development organization that helps poor people in Africa, Asia and South America to cross the poverty line. Through challenging, committed and long term partnerships with local organizations, along with focused and lasting value creation for every donation the organization is entrusted, Strømme Foundation aims to eradicate poverty by working with donors and partners in 13 countries. With its headquarters in Kristiansand, Norway, the organization was founded in 1976 to carry on with the work of Olav Strømme, a Lutheran church minister who started the work to help poor people get out of poverty.

The primary targets for education support are disadvantaged children and youth at risk, particularly from very poor, often rural communities, street children and those affected by war situations. The program supports out of school youth and children who have either dropped out or never opportunity to attended school. The Foundation also supports adult literacy programs especially for women.
Strømme Foundation in Eastern Africa aims to build the quality of education for such vulnerable children and youth through the community based education
are supported to work by engaging communities and enabling community participation to improve the quality of education and increase literacy among the poor hard to reach communities. The Foundation in East Africa also works to increase access to education for girls and to improve retention and basic education completion rates among such disadvantaged communities.

Support to Basic Education through Primary Schools
Working with the education partners in the region, both the learning environment and the quality of learning for the children is improved. Over the years, classrooms, libraries and resource centers have been built and existing classrooms renovated, while school furniture has been provided. To improve the sanitation in the schools, the Foundation supports building of toilets and bathrooms, and provides rain water harvesting

The Accelerated Education ProgramThis program enables young people who did not complete or had no opportunity to start a basic education to rejoin and complete their primary education within a short period of time. The Accelerated Learning Program in the Sudan is an initiative by the Sudanese government that aims to provide older children, youth and young adults who missed their education during the war to attain a basic education. The program covers all the school work normally done by children through their primary school, although it is shortened from eight to four years.

The Functional Adult Literacy ProgramFor various reasons such as poverty, inaccessibility of education services in the rural areas, and prolonged war situations, many adults in the region have had no access to education. To improve their opportunities to access basic literacy and numeracy skills, Strømme Foundation in Eastern Africa supports functional adult literacy programs. The program specially targets disadvantaged women and girls. In Southern Sudan, the program also targets demobilized and in-service soldiers who missed out on their basic education because of the war.

Through this program, the Strømme Foundation works to empower communities create sustainable livelihoods through the formation of savings and credit groups. At least 80% of the group members are women, and these have learned to save and accumulate funds from which they borrow to start or grow small
incomes and the quality of life for entire families. That way, the opportunities for their children remaining in school are increased.

south to north youth exchange program in East Africa. The program aims to encourage youth from the north to learn about the different cultures and way of life in the south, while the youth from the south are also sent to Norway for the same purpose.
We also implement the FK south to south professionals exchange program. The participants in the program are taken from Strømme partners within the region to support other organizations with capacity strengthening and skills or systems development to handle the challenges of startup and eventually, growth.
