Welcome to week 4 We have had a busy start to the year, which has seen the Coop near completion, our swimming carnival, some changes to staffing and teachers focussing on their teaching and learning programs. In focussing on the swimming carnival let me say I was suitably impressed by the attitude of our senior students in Years 10, 11 and 12 and the way they organised their teams and supported our younger students during their events. It certainly made me proud. Last night was our schools AGM and Open Night, where parents had the opportunity to meet their child’s teacher and get an understanding of how the classroom operates and classroom expectations. I would like to congratulate our teaching staff, who spent considerable time preparing for the night, having student work on display and class newsletters prepared outlining class expectations and course outlines for semester one. Thanks also to those parents, who took the time to take an interest in their child/ children’s work At the AGM the 2019 Annual Report, 2019 finance statement and 2020 Site Improvement Plan were signed off. Congratulations to Louise Pitt, who is our Governing Council Chair, David Peter, our Vice Chairperson, Shannon McPhee, our Secretary, Lee Slape, our Treasurer and Joy Little our Community representative for 2020. Congratulations also to our new and existing Governing Councillors Fleur Kleinig, Leah Kowald, Cristy Spry, Marie Peterson and Karen Schmerl. Lisa Rowntree is the Coorong District Council Representative. Thanks for taking an active interest in your child’s schooling.

We are still in urgent need of 2 volunteers to take up a 2 year School Governing Councillor role. Please strongly consider giving up your time to enable our Governing Council to be effective. If you are interested in joining us please contact the school or anyone of our current councillors. Our next meeting is Monday 16th March at 7:30pm. There is also an Aboriginal Community Representative position to be filled on Governing Council. Thank you to Leah Kowald for organising the BBQ and Jared Wallis for cooking the meat. Currently this week I am meeting with all teachers to discuss the students in the care and how they are supporting them to access their particular subjects, what support is needed and how students are being challenged in their learning. After these discussions teachers will write their Personal Learning Plans to align their work with the school Improvement Plan. Another aspect of my work will be to review the 2 client opinion surveys conducted last year and put in place plans to meet the thoughts and ideas of parents. Some of the positives include the subject range offered to students and the subsequent interactions between students and teachers. Areas noted as needing improvement include our grounds and communication as needing a major overhaul whether that be notifying parents around student issues, length of warning on costings for camps or relevant communication between staff and parents. Our recent Coop opening, class subject overviews, newsletters and the open night (whilst still in its infancy) are examples of that improvement.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce
myself as the new teacher at
Coomandook Area School. My name is
Avelin David and I am the class teacher
for Year 4/5/6. I enjoy teaching and it’s
an honour to be a part of this school.
As a teacher, I focus on developing students in all areas
of life. I teach them to respect and value each other. I
am a very positive person and believe that nothing is
impossible in life as long as you focus and put in the
hard work. My role models are Nick Vujic and Mother
Theresa as their legacy are very inspirational to me.
Thank you for welcoming me to your school.
Darryl Hewitt – P.E./Outdoor Ed/PLP
teacher. I have an interest in sport
and horses. I like to see students
actively involved in P.E. lessons
where they can learn new skills and
feel a sense of achievement.
My name is Crystal Berling and I am the preschool teacher this year. I live in Murray Bridge with my husband Tim and 2 year old daughter Ella. I am passionate about working with children and seeing them grow into confident lifelong learners.
My name is Eleanor Binney and I am
happy to introduce myself as a new
primary NIT teacher at Coomandook
Area School. I am working with the
4/5/6 class teaching Australian Sign
Language (Auslan), Health and P.E and with the 2/3
class teaching Humanities and Social Sciences. I have a
strong passion for all the subjects I teach, and I believe
my passion can inspire students to take academic risks
and grow as learners. Coomandook is an extremely
welcoming school and I am excited for my year here.
