May 20, 2018 St. Mary’s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY 14424 St. Bridget’s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield, NY 14469 Pentecost is a terrifically important day in the life of the Church. There is no salvation for us without the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is wrapped up in our life for our good. It is power for the Christian: power to heal, to baptize, and power to celebrate the liturgy of the Mass. When the Holy Spirit first comes to us on Pentecost, what did he do? He made it possible for those who could not understand each other to do so. He made it possible for us to talk to each other. He made it possible for us to be more easily one people. The Holy Spirit is a bond of love and the work of a bond is to keep something together. Additionally, the Spirit is specifically the Spirit of Christ. The Apostles heal in the name of Christ, we baptize in the name of God – Father, Son and Spirit — all of these things teach us who the Spirit is. If we all are from Ontario County, do we share a spirit? If we are all lawyers, doctors, artists, do we share a spirit? Do we then share a Spirit if we all are Children of the Father who are saved by Christ? The Christian Spirit makes Christ more real than ever. Indwelling within us, we take his Spirit into every encounter and circumstance in our life, and through the power of the Spirit, we are given courage to act as Christ would. The Spirit is power and is tangible force within us, giving light to the world, His light through us. The world frustrates the unity of the Spirit. It cuts and severs, breaks and scatters; it destroys. We do not understand the Spirit of Christ if we participate in the world in these ways. May Christ’s Spirit be ever upon us for gathering, forgiving, giving life, and serving. May we, in being his disciples, understand that it is not in filling our life with our own power that we gain joy and fullness, but rather, that in gaining his Spirit, we find that nothing is impossible. Pastoral Note: It is with tremendous gratitude that I thank the terrific and generous offerings of many in the parish as we conduct our ministries. Most notably, our catechists that work tirelessly to offer instruction on the faith we share together, both at St. Mary’s School and for our GIFT program. As many of you are aware we have had two key members of our staff leave recently. Due to this turnover and in order to put our heads together to see how we might proceed, we are ending our GIFT sessions on May 20 th rather than with the June session. I thank you yet again for understanding. We have convened a Faith Formation Advisory Team to assist me in evaluating how to proceed. What is not broken doesn’t need to be fixed, but this team has brought to my attention much that needs due consideration. I ask for your continued prayers and support as we do this work to provide powerful formation for our parish. This team’s names will be published soon and I’ll ask you to direct questions and input to them. I thank the Diocese for their assistance and support as they assist us and, as always, all of you for your insightful and generous help. Many thanks! Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others.

Question of the Week: Are you willing to allow the

Spirit to continue transforming you?

Scripture Reflection Today’s readings explore the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church.

Knowing We first receive the Holy Spirit at baptism. The Spirit enables us to live with one another in a new way: with “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gen-erosity,” etc. The Spirit propels us to engage with the world in a new way: we “testify” to the mighty acts of God through the very way that we live. The truth God gives transforms us and, through us, transforms the world.

This Pentecost commemoration does not simply re-call a past event, but celebrates what God is doing within us now. In baptism each of received the Spir-it; that is our Pentecost. The Spirit is not something we have, is not a possession. The Spirit dwells with-in us as divine Life, enabling us to be faithful and true disciples.

Loving If we are to exude the fruits of the Spirit (see the second reading), we must be willing to die to our-selves. We cannot love another if we do not give of ourselves to others. We cannot have joy if we are turned in on ourselves. We cannot have peace if we are distracted by getting and doing only what we want. We cannot have patience if we do not respect the dignity of others. We cannot have gentleness if we do not see the need in others. We cannot have self-control if we don’t put the good of others first. We cannot have any of these fruits if we do not live the wondrous mystery of the Spirit dwelling within us.

Serving If we are to be living icons of the Spirit of truth dwelling within us, then the good choices we make daily testify to this divine indwelling. Simply put, Pentecost invites us to act like God!
