Nick Zukowski WE ENTER THE SEASON OF ADVENT TOGETHER… With today’s Feast of the First Sunday of Advent, we start a new liturgical year. This year’s Advent season is only about three weeks long, with the Fourth Sunday of Advent falling this year on Christmas Eve, December 24 th . Please note the revised Mass schedule for the weekend of December 2324, and Monday, December 25 th . Volunteers will be needed to serve as altar servers, readers and ushers. Signup sheets are located in the back of church, under the Holy Family statue. Please help us have a full roster of liturgical ministers for Christmas weekend! CALLING ALL CHILDREN… We invite all children to help us celebrate Christmas musically at the Sunday, 5:00 PM Children‘s Mass on Christmas Eve. Rehearsals will be on Tuesdays, December 5, 12 and 19 from 6:30 PM to 7:15 PM in church. Spread the word and bring the kids! WHAT IS ADVENT?... The word “advent” means the coming or arrival. Advent calls us to remember the three comings of Jesus Christ: in time, in our lives and at the end of time. Jesus came in time when He was born as true God and true man, and walked the earth for thirtythree years. Jesus comes in our lives when we celebrate and receive the sacraments, through others, and when we have a truly religious conversion experience when we live for Him as first in our lives. We will see him on the day of our dying. And we believe that Jesus Christ will come again in time at the end of the world. Are YOU ready? REMEMBERING OUR RETIRED AND SENIOR RELIGIOUS… Next weekend is the weekend for the annual Retirement Fund for Religious. This national collection is taken up every year as an expression of our gratitude for the men and women in our religious orders and communities, now elderly and many infirmed, who served the Church for decades, especially in the areas of education, medicine and social justice. Envelopes are near the collection baskets in the back of church. A PERSONAL THANKYOU… My sister, Kathy Zukowski Wisniewski, passed away at age 59 on Monday, November 20 th , after a brave battle with cancer. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated here on Saturday, November 25 th . Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the support, prayers and kind wishes as she walked during her journey of faith, inspiration and great pain. She often commented on the kindness and compassion of this parish, and said that of all my parish assignments, this was “home” for her. Bless you all! HAVE A BLESSED WEEK… AND “SEE YOU IN CHURCH!”

ADVENT BEGINS !

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

Advent comes from the Latin word for

an "arrival" or a "coming". Advent

means that the Lord is coming. Jesus

Christ, our brother in our humanity

and our God in His divinity is about to

arrive. But He is comes to us in

different ways. First, Jesus came to

us at a specific point in history at

Bethlehem about 2000 years ago.

But in the Church's great feast of

Christmas He mystically comes

again. Second, the Lord, Alpha and

Omega, will come to judge the living

and the dead in the Second Coming.

Third, the Redeemer comes to us in

grace. He speaks to us in our

consciences; He comes to us in the

Eucharist and in the Word of God

proclaimed. He arrives in the person

of the beggar, the needy, the

suffering, the oppressed. We must be

ready to receive and welcome Him

when He comes, however He comes. (Catholic Online)

CHRISTMAS FOOD! In less than weeks we will be making the food baskets for the families we are helping this Christmas. We will be needing non!perishable food to make those baskets. Ingredients for a holiday meal are needed, but we also try to give basic food items needed throughout the week. This includes things such as peanut butter and jelly, pasta and sauce, cereal, canned fruit and vegetables, tuna fish and mayonnaise, macaroni and cheese, soup and crackers, etc. Thank you for your unwavering support of our Christian Service Programs. Food may be brought to the Parish Office during regular business hours or to church and dropped in the food baskets behind the last row of pews. Many of the families we are helping this year have children with physical or mental disabilities with the added burden of financial difficulties. You have no idea how much your generosity brings joy to these families. You are truly sharing the light and love of Christ with them. Thank you again!

GIVING TREES! Just a reminder that there are still tags on our Giving Trees. The gifts will help us provide Christmas presents for families experiencing difficult times this year. Many of the families are dealing with illness, children with disabilities, escape from abusive situations, loss of jobs or combinations of these. Any help you can give us to provide help for them is very much appreciated. Some of you have asked about making monetary donations because you cannot do the shopping any more. If you would like to do this, I do have volunteers who can do some shopping. Please put your donation in an envelope marked “Giving Tree, attention Renee” and I will make sure that it is used to help a family. This can be dropped off in the parish office. Gifts should be brought to the Tree Trimming Service on Thursday, December 14th, at 7pm. We will be wrapping up our ‘Walk to Bethlehem’ that evening. The drawing for prizes for those who participated will be done at the social after the service. You do not have to be present to win, but we hope you will be there. If you cannot attend the service, please be sure to bring your gifts to church or the parish office by December 14. Gifts brought after that date probably will not go to the person they were intended for. Thank you for your kindness and generosity!

HAPPY FEASTDAY, FR. NICK!! December 6th

Through the intercession of St. Nicholas may

you continue to follow his example of generosity

and humor. You are in the prayers of your parish

family. !

God bless you.

Traditionally thought to be the original “Santa Claus”, St. Nicholas is the

patron of children, pawnbrokers, bakers and much more. Many Advent

customs are associated with “St. Nick.” Check out your local library or go

online to www.catholic.org to find out more about this saint and some fun

family activities to do on this feast. !

REFLECTING ON THE

WORD!!

It Must Be God’s Fault!

It must be God’s fault. That’s the conclusion Isaiah reaches. And who of us hasn’t thought the same? If things don’t go our way, if someone hurts us, if someone leaves useven if the mess is our own faultwe blame God.

People sin, but Isaiah asks God, “Why do you let us wander, O LOPQ, from your ways?” People show no remorse, but Isaiah asks God, “Why do you harden our hearts so that we fear you not?” Must be God’s fault.

Isaiah’s prayer opens the season of Advent because of a specific request it makes. “Rend the heavens and come down.” In the midst of our misfortune, sorrow, and sin, when we realize our own strength fails to make life any better, to eliminate hurt, or to erase the past, we finally turn to God for a solution. Let there be no veil concealing heaven from earth. Let God rip it open, come down here, and save us from the messiness of life.

God did just that on the first Christmas Day.

As we stand on the threshold of another Advent, we ask God to do it again. Even if our mess isn’t God’s fault, we need God’s help to set us free.

Small Packages!

As a child, I remember my Mom telling me that “The best presents come in small packages.” As time has gone on, I have found this to be quite true. !

The services of a Stephen Minister are small. They simply listen, care and help care receivers reflect on different issues in their lives. These presents from the Stephen Minister may not seem like much to the ordinary observer, but to the care receiver they can be the best present that they could receive.!

If you are experiencing a difficult time in your life and would like the services of a Stephen Minister, please contact Florence Murphy at 576!264!7515 for more information. The best present that you could receive may be waiting for you in a small package.!

THE ADVENT WREATH !

The Advent wreath, like many of our customs at Christmas traces its origin to pre!Christian times when candles were lit during the winter to the "sun!god" asking for light. It was the Lutherans who started the Advent wreath as a Christian custom. The word “advent” comes from the Latin term for arrival or "coming." It is the season when we await the coming of the Lord in time and at the end of time.

The Advent wreath usually has four candles, three purple and one pink to match the color of the vestments of the week. The candles are lit on the Sundays of Advent. The first candle, called the Prophets' Candle, is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, then the second candle, called the Bethlehem Candle, is lit on the second Sunday along with the first. On the third Sunday of Advent a pink candle, called the Shepherds' Candle, is lit representing "Rejoice" Sunday, and then the fourth candle, called the Angels' Candle, is lit on the last Sunday of Advent. Sometimes a white candle is placed in the center of the wreath and is called the Christ candle.

A different explanation of the meaning of the candles can sound like the greetings we use in our Christmas cards. This explanation says that the candles represent "hope," "love," "joy," and "peace." For this reason the wreath can also be used during the Christmas celebrations but with candles that are all white. !

NOTES FROM YOUR

NURSE!!

“God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” !(1Corinthians 1:9)

Today we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time of preparation. We prepare to celebrate Christmas, but we also prepare for the second coming of Jesus Christ. This Scripture from today’s readings reminds us that we do this by developing a relationship with Jesus. We do this by spending time together. Deepening relationships lead to love, joy and caring. Our spiritual relationship with Jesus can be nurtured through prayer, Eucharist, reading Scripture and other faith!based books, devotions, listening to inspirational music or just spending quiet time in front of the Blessed Sacrament or in your prayer space at home. These things help us to know Jesus and grow close to Him. As we develop this relationship we rely more on the inspiration and discernment of His Holy Spirit. Walking through life with Jesus at our side makes everything better and more meaningful. Tending to our human relationships is also essential for our emotional and mental health. Important relationships include family, romantic relationships and close friends. Investing in these requires time and effort, but the rewards are so meaningful. Our lives are so much richer when they include people who love us, care about us and support us during both good and difficult times. Some essential qualities of close interpersonal relationships include

♦ Trust: personal information can be shared without the worry that it will be shared with others and you know that your loved one will always consider what is best for you and the relationship.

♦ Communication: sharing your thoughts, fears, concerns and joys builds the relationship. Remember that listening is a big part of communication.

♦ Ability to apologize: because we are human, we all make mistakes, but we need to own up to them and ask for forgiveness. We all need to take responsibility for our behavior and work to resolve any conflict.

♦ Humility: we have to know that everything is not all about us. Putting others first sometimes and acknowledging that all good things come from God is part of being humble.

♦ Time: spending time together is crucial. Physical togetherness time, phone time, face time on the computer are all ways we can do this in the high tech world we live in.

As we begin this holy season of Advent, consider working on both your spiritual relationships and human relationships as we prepare for Christmas. Both will be a blessing. Have a blessed week! Renee’
