DEAUVILLE, France--Three years ago, Mondialiste (Ire) (Galileo

{Ire}) was sold from the draft of Wertheimer at Frere at Arqana's

Summer Sale for i190,000 before going on to win GI Woodbine

Mile and GI Arlington Million in the two subsequent seasons.

The team behind the stallion, who remains in training with David

O'Meara at the age of seven, returned to Deauville in the hope

of finding a horse to emulate his globetrotting success and

plumped for Lord Glitters (Fr), a 4-year-old son of Whipper (Ire).

The four-time winner, who was runner-up in last year's Listed

Grand Prix du Lion d'Angers, was sold through the consignment

of trainer Christophe Lotoux for i270,000 as lot 357.

"He's been bought for Geoff Turnbull of Elwick Stud,"

confirmed O'Meara after his assistant Jason Kelly had signed the

docket. "We'll get him home and see how we go but we hope

he'd be able to be campaigned internationally in the future.

While Lord Glitters topped the horses-in-training section of the

Thursday's session, he fell just shy of the top price for the whole

sale. That honour went to lot 199, the 10-year-old Tiger Hill (Ire)

mare Sailor Moon (Ire), who was sold through Patrick

Chedeville's Haras du Petit Tellier for i280,000.

is worth A$1.5 million, will be run at Caulfield on February 24.

More and more businesses in the thoroughbred industry are

using social media to strengthen their brand and reach out to

current and potential customers and clients. Jane Davis, Equine

Brand Manager at Connolly's RED MILLS, shares her insights on

their strategies for social media marketing.

TDN: What are the benefits of social media marketing for

businesses in the Thoroughbred industry?

JD: From our perspective, social media offers the opportunity to

connect with our customers and our online audience and share

content with them. First and foremost, we use our social media

channels to establish the personality of the brand to give our

followers and people that engage with the content a sense of

what Connolly's RED MILLS represents.

Connolly's RED MILLS is a nutrition company that produces

performance feed for the high performance horse. We are very

lucky to work with some world-class riders, yards and stud farms

and social media gives us an opportunity to share insights into

their stories, experiences and successes.

JD: We also engage in a wide variety of event sponsorships

across both the racing and sport horse industries and again

social media allows us to shine a light on this activity and share

our message.

It is important for us that we also use the platforms to share

information about our products and to share nutritional advice

and insights.

TDN: What social channels do you prefer, and what type of

content do you post on each platform?

JD: One of our biggest challenges when using social media is that

we talk to quite a few different audiences. We focus

predominantly on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube,

and we can see that different audiences use different platforms.

With the thoroughbred media and the trainers, jockeys and

breeders, we see strong engagement on Twitter. The show

jumping audience is more active on Instagram.

We try to create engaging and informative content that is

relevant to our audience. Content on Twitter needs to be news

worthy and in real time. On Facebook, we use very good imagery

and video. The racing industry provides such stunning, beautiful

imagery and that is something we are trying to make the most

of.

TDN: Do you look at other organisations, inside or outside the

Thoroughbred world, for inspiration?

JD: Yes, I follow all sorts of brands from different industries and I

enjoy seeing how they tailor their content. You can learn some

things that are done well, and you can learn some things that

aren't done well.

I think that the racecourses and the racing authorities in

Ireland and Britain do a beautiful job in creating content. The

Irish National Stud, with their videos or mares and foals, is

another good example from our industry.

TDN: How do you measure the success and popularity of yoursocial media content?

JD: Engagement, video views, link clicks and traffic to yourwebsite are all so easy to track and measure and that is thebeauty of digital marketing. I set different objectives for ourcampaigns, for example to capture e-mail data, or get entries toa competition. And some other posts are just fun and engagingpieces. It also allows you to experiment and adapt your content. Youcan come up with new content and measure its performance.Sometimes it is the simplest things that get the mostengagement. Just that one beautiful picture of a horse breezingor in full flight. We had one incredible picture of Ballycasey andRuby Walsh jumping a fence at Gowran Park and that got anunbelievable amount of engagement on both Facebook andTwitter. It can sometimes be surprising to see what works andwhat doesn't. Cont. p5

JD: I always measure the engagement and the reach we are

getting from the posts, and if that is organic or paid for. I want

to see organic - unpaid - reach and engagement, because that

shows that something really caught the eye of the user. People

are engaging with their social media predominantly via mobile

and on the go, and a post must be vibrant and interesting to

catch people's imagination and hopefully get them to engage

with that piece of content.

TDN: What are the biggest mistakes to avoid making?

JD: As a brand we try to have a very positive tone on social

media. We are quite celebratory of the industry and the sport

that we are a part of and that we are contributing to. I

personally don't like to see brands engage in competition, or

brands that are overly opinionated or negative.

Also, don't be too pushy. I much prefer to see social media used

to make friends, create connections, and share information. Of

course it is also a channel to direct people to more sales focused

information and content, but I see it more as an information

provision and a conversation piece. There must be a balance

between your engaging content and your sales focused content.

TDN: Going forward, what is next on your social media agenda,

and what social media trends are you looking forward to?

JD: Video is high on our agenda, as it is for a lot of brands,

because it is very effective across social media. A challenge is to

reduce the length. Traditional corporate videos might be a

couple of minutes long, but we need to make them much

shorter. We are experimenting a bit with videos and looking at

different content, including live video. There is so much you can

do on your own phone. Video content can be taken at an event

and published live in the moment.

Something else on the agenda is the likes of stories, such as

Snapchat and Instagram stories. Instagram stories is something

that we are trying to embrace when we are onsite on different

events and that has been successful for us. When people can't

get to an event or they can't get to a certain thing, you can use

your social media channels to bring people in and make them

part of that. We also want to do some behind the scenes content

here in Goresbridge. All the feed is manufactured here and we

want to be able to use our social media channel to show people

what goes on behind the scenes.

MUSSELBURGH TO UNDERGO

INDEPENDENT REVIEW Musselburgh Racecourse, which has had its licence

temporarily suspended by the British Horseracing Authority

(BHA) after the body which runs the track, the Musselburgh

Joint Racing Committee (MJRC), failed to agree to an

independent governance review, could return to action as soon

as July 14.

The BHA announced on Thursday that it has received

correspondence from the MJRC and the local East Lothian

Council stating that the review can now go ahead. However, the

agreement contained a number of caveats on which the BHA is

now seeking clarification.

The BHA hopes to confirm no later than 12 noon on Friday,

July 7 whether the licence condition has been met and if

Musselburgh's next fixture a week after that can go ahead as

planned.

As the co-owner and co-manager of the family-operated,

Oklahoma-based Mathis Brothers Furniture company, Bill

Mathis has spent years focused on cultivating a business with

lasting potential--and the same can be said about his

involvement as a Thoroughbred owner. Initially entering the

game in the early 1980s with his father, Leonard, Mathis

currently operates Mathis Stable alongside his wife, Terry, and

has enjoyed considerable success with the likes of GSW & MGISP

My Miss Sophia (Unbridled=s Song) and MSW & GSP Lira (Giant=s

Causeway). With an eye toward the future, and after the family

patriarch demonstrated waning interest in ownership, the

Mathises recently decided to offer MSW Adorable Miss (Kitten=s

Joy) [Hip 403] and SW Bronson (Medaglia d=Oro) [Hip 411] as

part of the fledgling Elite Sales consignment at the Fasig-Tipton

July Selected Horses of Racing Age sale next Monday.

AThese horses are the last of a crop that my dad was partners

with us on,@ Mathis explained. AHe just doesn=t enjoy or follow

the business as much as he used to. So we thought we=d sell this

last crop while they have so much great potential. We can

continue to go back to September and buy some more horses.@

HENCE SEEKS REBOUND AT PRAIRIE

Calumet Farm homebred Hence (Street Boss) generated

significant buzz ahead of the GI Kentucky Derby after notching a

convincing win in the Mar. 26 GIII Sunland Derby--a race that

subsequently yielded GII Toyota Blue Grass S. hero Irap (Tiznow)

and GI Arkansas Derby runner-up Conquest Mo Money (Uncle

Mo). Hence was unable to deliver beneath the Twin Spires,

however, spinning his wheels in an 11th-place finish over a

sealed strip, and followed with an equally disappointing ninth-

place performance in the May 20 GI Preakness S. The handsome

chestnut has an opportunity to stabilize facing a far more

manageable field Friday night in the GIII Iowa Derby at Prairie

Meadows as the 5-1 fourth choice on the morning line.

July Sale Comes at Right Time for Mathis

Mathis continued, AI can understand that you get tired of

everything at some point, and he=s almost 90 years old. He=s not

enjoying it as much as he was at my age.@

While Leonard enjoyed success as the owner of the speedy

MGSW mare Pine Tree Lane and GSW Alabama Nana (Ire) in the

1980s, Bill and Terry Mathis ramped up their involvement in the

game in the early 2010s, spending roughly $3 million at the

2-year-old sales--a departure from his family=s previous

emphasis on securing horses of racing age.

Mathis was quick to acknowledge that the results on the

racetrack were not necessarily congruent with the investment,

leading him to believe that new buyers are better off attaining

proven commodities.

AWhen we first got in this business in the >80s, we had some of

our best luck buying horses that were at the track because you

had so much more expectation about what you were buying,@

Mathis added. AYou could vet them, you could see their race

record, and you were having fun right away. Compared to a

yearling, there is so much that can go wrong and so much time

involved that they change so much in that period of time. It=s

hard for anyone to guess. And then you see what=s happening in

the 2-year-old in training sales where people are paying

$1 million, plus, for horses that can work an eighth of a mile

with no pedigree.@

According to Mathis, the July Sale offers buyers a unique

opportunity to secure stakes performers--such as Adorable Miss

and Bronson--while affording sellers the chance to tailor their

stock.

AThere wasn=t a sale like this--an elite sale--[7-8 years ago],@

Mathis explained. ASo I think it fits a niche. Everyone=s goals and

objectives are different in the business. You buy yearlings and

have great anticipation and hope, and some of them turn out to

be route horses, some of them turn out to be sprinters, some of

them turn out to be good performers on the turf--and some of

them are ones you can keep as broodmares. Some people want

to keep them as broodmares, and some don=t. There=s just so

much that changes once a horse=s career begins... I think the

sale, over time, will continue to build and be a vehicle for buyers

to achieve different results--and sellers, too.@

The Mathises are well acquainted with horses of racing age

sales, having parted ways with My Miss Sophia for $2.15 million

at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November sale, and more recently,

returning to that same auction in 2016 to sell Lira for $950,000.

While the July Sale places a clear emphasis on fit-and-ready

racing prospects, Mathis said that Adorable Miss--a full-sister to

2016 GIII Pucker Up S. victress Noble Beauty--possesses

significant residual value as a broodmare prospect once her

racing career has concluded.

AWe have had some good luck,@ Mathis reflected. AFillies

provide you with a parachute, if you will, to make good

broodmares. Adorable Miss is such a beautiful horse--she=ll

undoubtedly have a beautiful foal some day.@

As for the time being, the Mathises spent last weekend in

sunny South Florida watching their two primary July offerings

compete on the turf at Gulfstream Park for trainer Todd

Pletcher. Adorable Miss, a $155,000 KEESEP yearling buy,

notched the second stakes win of her career and third win from

four starts in the one-mile Martha Washington S. [video], while

Bronson rallied from well off the pace to miss by less than a

length in the Not Surprising S. over the same course and

distance.

AWe had a whole lot of fun down at Gulfstream, and we=re

proud of the efforts both horses put in,@ Mathis said. AAdorable

Miss just sat there and waited, and then turning for home, she

got it done. In fact, Tyler [Gaffalione] told me, after he got off

the horse, that he had a ton of more horse [left]. He just showed

her the whip to keep her alert, but he said she had a whole

other gear that he never had to use...Bronson got pushed so

wide, and the other horse coming out of the one-hole got an

easy lead. Speed was holding all day on that turf course--and it

was just too tough for him to make up that much ground in the

last eighth of a mile, but boy, he almost did it.@

Mathis said he believes Bronson has significant room for

improvement at longer distances, while Adorable Miss should

be well positioned to enter the graded stakes ranks in the near

future. The stable=s two-time winner Liberty Kitten (Kitten=s Joy)

will also pass through the ring as part of the Denali Stud

GII Mother Goose S. at Belmont--was entered with Elite Sales,

but will scratch and continue to campaign for Mathis Stable.

Equipped with years of experience and business acumen,

Mathis said he has full confidence in the lasting potential of

Bradley Weisbord and Liz Crow=s Elite Sales venture, which

debuts at the July Sale.

ABradley and Liz and that entire team do their homework,@

Mathis commented. AThey want to be a long-term player in the

business. And that=s the only way to be in business--where you

develop a reputation that everyone is happy.@

The Mathises are undoubtedly happy with their position as

owners with a long-term commitment to the game. In many

ways, the 2017 July Sale represents a stopping off point as they

part ways with their current stock and move toward a return to

the yearling sales.

ENTRIES Fasig-Tipton=s July Selected Horses of Racing Age catalogue has

grown to 125 accepted entries, it was announced Thursday.

Nineteen entries have been added since the catalogue first went

online June 28. The catalogue features 16 stakes winners, four

of which are graded stakes winners.

All entries can be viewed in the sale=s enhanced online

catalogue, which features pedigrees, race videos, statistical

links, Ragozin Asheet@ numbers, real-time past performances, as

well as handicapping assessments. Print catalogues will be

available on-site at Fasig-Tipton July 7.

The July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale will take place this

Empire Dreams Retired:

West Point Thoroughbreds=s multiple stakes-winning New

York-bred Empire Dreams (Patriot Act--Ascended Dreams, by

Thunder Gulch) has been retired from racing after suffering an

ankle injury following a workout at Belmont Park, it was

announced Thursday. Trained by Tom Albertrani for most of his

career, the 6-year-old gelding is a five-time stakes winner, with

his most notable victory coming in the 2015 Empire Classic S. He

retires with a record of 6-8-4 from 24 starts and earnings of

$813,751.

AWe=ve been fortunate to campaign some very successful New

York-breds, and Empire Dreams is at the top of the list,@ said

West Point President Terry Finley. AHe rarely threw in a clunker

and provided his partners with a lot of thrills. We opted to have

surgery done at New Bolton to repair a fractured sesamoid in his

ankle to give him the best chance of having a second athletic

career. All of us will miss seeing him gallop by every morning this

summer in Saratoga.@

He was bred in New York by Pegasus Dream Stable.

NYRA Partners With FOX Sports Ohio:

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) and FOX Sports Ohio

have reached an agreement to televise "Belmont Park Live" and

"Saratoga Live" on select dates in 2017, it was announced

Thursday. Coverage begins Saturday, June 8, with a telecast that

includes Belmont=s Stars and Stripes Racing Festival from 6 p.m.

to 7 p.m. E.T.

"Thanks to Fox Sports, and their regional sports networks

across the country, tens of millions of fans and horseplayers

have access to live coverage of NYRA's world class racing

throughout the year," said Tony Allevato, President of NYRA

Bets and Executive Producer for NYRA television. "We thank

them for their commitment to horse racing and look forward to

presenting our Stars and Stripes Racing Festival this Saturday to

a national audience."

Fox Sports Ohio will air 21 "Saratoga Live" shows beginning on

Monday, July 24 and concluding with the final Saturday of the

2017 Saratoga meet Sept. 2.

Fourth Annual Charles J. Hesse Golf Outing July 24:

The fourth annual Charles J. Hesse Golf Outing, hosted by the

Thoroughbred Breeders' Association of New Jersey, will be held

at Navesink Country Club, Monday, July 24. Proceeds of the

event, which also includes dinner, prizes, raffles, etc., benefit

retired Thoroughbreds of New Jersey through Second Call, a

Thoroughbred adoption and placement program. The late

Hesse, who raced as Char-Mari Stable along with his wife

Marianne, campaigned the millionaire Park Avenue Ball.

AThis is our fourth year,@ said NJTHA Executive Director

Michael Musto. AMarianne had come to us and has always been

a big supporter of Thoroughbred racing and Monmouth Park.

She thought it would be a great gesture to honor Charlie=s

memory by putting together this golf outing. And every year, we

try to raise money for retired horses that have run at

Monmouth Park. She=s been extremely supportive, and without

her, the program probably wouldn=t have gotten off the ground.

In the four years, we=ve raised somewhere around $500,000 for

retired horses.@

Event director Liz Dowd Mosca added, AIn the past number of

years, it has really grown. This is our fourth year and Monmouth

University is our signature sponsor. It is a very popular event.

We were almost sold out before we even had our brochures

made! We are trying a new concept this year, and the dinner is

Old Friends Resident Tinners Way Dead at 27:

Tinners Way, a multiple Grade I winner and the last colt born

of Secretariat, died July 5 at Old Friends, the farm announced

Thursday. The 27-year-old had recently battled the onset of

severe neurological disease. Tinners Way captured the GI Pacific

Classic in 1994 and 1995 and the GI Californian S. in 1996. "We

are so saddened by the loss of Tinners Way," said Old Friends's

Michael Blowen. "But it=s times like these that you really see

how much we can do for these old horses...He had so many

friends from all over the country that visited him often. He

leaves behind a great legacy and a host of adoring fans."

July 10, 1982...Landaluce, a two-year-old daughter of Seattle

Slew, won the Hollywood Lassie S. by 21 lengths. The filly died of

a viral infection in November of that year, but was

posthumously voted champion two-year-old filly.

July 12, 1958...Gallant Man returned west to take the

Hollywood Gold Cup by a hard-fought half-length.

July 12, 1971...Bold Ruler, sire of 82 stakes winners including
