STRIKE FORCE DERWENT STRIKERS HOCKEY CLUB NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2015 DERWENTSTRIKERS.COM.AU A word from our President The season is upon us! In the off season, the committee, coaches and other members of the Club have been hard at work to ensure that the year will be yet another strong one for the Strikers. On Sunday 1st March, Dave Isaac held a welcome fun day for the juniors at Cornelian Bay. It was a great day and fun was had by all. Thank you Dave and Vicky for all your hard work. In 2015, Derwent will enter a Womens’ Veterans team after a number of years of absence. The team consists of both old and new players and I welcome back the old players as well as the new in what is a very difficult competition. Hopefully it will be the beginning of what in years to come will be a very successful team. To be a successful club, requires financial assistance. In 2015 we welcome back Millingtons for a further 5 years. Millingtons has been a strong supporter of the Club and without them; we would not be able to do some of the things we do. However I would also like to welcome new sponsors, Littlewood Berry Farm (Sophie Nichols) for all your strawberry needs, Bob-Jane T-Mart Moonah for all your service/tyre needs and Able Labels who are assisting us in the production of our 80th Anniversary Wines. I know you will welcome them to the Club and thank them for the assistance they are giving us. We will celebrate the opening of the season on Saturday 28th March at our Club Sponsor Prince of Wales. I am hopeful that everyone will attend and enjoy and celebrate the club. Finally, good luck for all the teams on the commencement of the season. Go Strikers! Jane Ansell Social Membership Social membership for the 2015 season has opened. In 2015 we will see the club celebrate its 80th anniversary. Good SportsThe Derwent Hockey Club is now a Good Sports Club. The Good Sports program works in communities to make sports clubs safe, healthy and family-friendly. We are calling all persons who have a Responsible serving of alcohol accreditation to contact Jenny Middleton. [email protected]

Working With ChildrenThe introduction of Working With Children Checks (WWCCs) in Tasmania has commenced. The Department of Justice is administering the introduction of this major initiative in stages over the next three years. Ultimately, it will be a requirement that most people working with children in Tasmania hold a WWCC. The Club committee resolved that in the first instance all members of the committee, all coaches and managers of junior and Premier League teams and umpires of juniors are to apply for the necessary registration. This will be reviewed and should it be felt there is a need to widen those who should be registered this will be done. More detailed information in relation to this change, including a link to relevant information on the Department of Justice website, can be found at cdn.fahan.tas.edu.au/assets/779/wwcc.pdf?1409275257. There is a small cost for volunteers in obtaining a WWCC.

If you have any queries in relation to this matter, please do not hesitate to contact the Member Protection Information officer Mike Howarth.
