Vision Statement

A community where everyone who is seriously ill has the nourishment they need to manage their illness. Food & Friends is built on a simple premise: anyone can get sick and everyone can help.

• We believe that everyone managing a serious

illness should have the nourishment they need to

improve their health and enhance their quality of

life, so we prepare and provide specialized meals

that are designed to meet the medical and dietary

needs of each of our clients.

• We believe in nourishing both the body and the

mind, so our meals are delivered by caring com-

munity members who also help end the sense

of social isolation that can result from a serious

illness, particularly for the homebound.

• We believe that no one is immune from illness,

regardless of demographics or economic status.

• We believe in the power of compassion and the

importance of neighbors helping neighbors, so

we create opportunities for impactful and fulfilling

volunteer service that helps our sick neighbors in

need and builds a healthier community for all.

Mission Statement

To improve the lives and health of people with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses that limit their ability to provide nourishment for themselves by:

• preparing and delivering specialized meals and

groceries that are designed to meet the medical

and dietary needs of each of our clients;

• providing nutritional counseling and wellness

education that enhances our clients’ quality of life;

and

• creating a strong sense of community for both our

clients and volunteers that reduces the social iso-

lation that often comes with serious illnesses and

provides meaningful opportunities for neighbors

to help neighbors in need.

Leadership Message

Developed the prior year, with support from the Meyer Foundation, Food & Friends’ strategic plan aims at

creating a shared and lasting vision for the future of the organization. Your partnership is crucial to this vision,

which leverages our unique strengths and expertise to serve an even greater portion of our community in need.

Over the course of three phases, the four-year plan sets out to achieve the following goals:

• Improve the health and wellbeing of our clients;

• Expand community and donor engagement and awareness;

• Increase the number of people served; and

• Strengthen capacity and build sustainability to prepare for future growth.

This report shares the steps we’ve taken thus far to advance each of these goals and our community impact

made possible through your generosity.

By dedicating ourselves to the “food is medicine” model of nutritional care, together we are improving health outcomes and laying the groundwork for future research and best practices with our peers across the country

(page 4). Through new investments in digital outreach, communications and volunteerism, we are deepening and broadening our engagement with our community (page 5). With our expansion of service to both adult

and child clients with poorly-controlled diabetes, we are extending our lifeline and forging new paths in the

health sector (page 6). And finally, a remarkable $2 million gift from members of the Bresler family is allowing

us to grow capacity in a sustainable way, setting us up for future success (page 7).

This four-year plan will enable Food & Friends to make

strategic choices that will guide our future growth.

You are an important partner in that future. There

is still great need, not just for food, but good nutrition

for improved health. Our strategic plan will allow us

to effectively and smartly pursue our vision of a com-

munity where everyone who is seriously ill has the

nourishment they need to manage their illness.

This plan also sets the organization up for success

as we transition to a new Executive Director in early

2019, following a 23-year tenure under our current

leadership. By strengthening our foundation and

creating room for opportunity in the future, the

new Executive Director will have all of the tools

and resources needed to navigate the organization

into a sustainable and impactful future.

TAKING “FOOD IS MEDICINE” TO NEW HEIGHTS

Since 1988, Food & Friends has consistently evolved to better meet the needs of its clients – pioneering HIV/

AIDS nutrition services, expanding to new illnesses and geographies, and adding flexibility and customization to

our meal plans. In recent years, much of this advancement has come through our work as a founding member

of the national Food Is Medicine Coalition (FIMC). With support from the MAC AIDS Fund, the coalition aims to:

• advance public policy that supports access to food and nutrition services for people with severe and/or

chronic illnesses;

• promote research on the efficacy of food and nutrition services on health outcomes and cost of care; and

• share best practices in the provision of medically-tailored meals and of nutrition education and counseling.

By being at the forefront of this movement, Food & Friends is bringing the best available nutritional care to its

clients while keeping an eye on the future. Advances in medical nutrition therapy, emerging research and new

partnerships with healthcare institutions present exciting opportunities for improved outcomes. To ready

ourselves and meet our strategic goal of improving the lives of our clients, Food & Friends created staff

positions for a fourth registered dietitian and new strategic partnerships manager.

We already see the fruit of this labor. Food & Friends clients report increased food security, improved medication adherence and improved quality of life. Clients reported the following programmatic

successes in our 2017 Client Survey and Nutrition Impact Survey:

After being diagnosed with cancer in April of 2016, Rhonda Palmer

was introduced to a nutritionist who referred her to Food & Friends.

It was hard for her to imagine what the meal service would be like

at first, but after just one visit from a Food & Friends registered

dietitian, she began feeling the impact. From then on, she says, with

each and every volunteer and delivery, Food & Friends has been an

integral part of her recovery. “They give hugs, they’re checking on you, they’re checking on your family, I just can’t thank Food & Friends enough.” As Rhonda was finishing her treatments,

her mother was diagnosed with her second cancer. And Food &

Friends stood by. “It’s just an incredible service, so I just want to say

thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Every Monday and Tuesday, Food & Friends volunteer Joan Palmer

comes through our doors for her morning Groceries-to-Go shift.

“No one should go without food,” says Joan. “And whether it’s a

matter of having food donated or whether it’s food being pre-

pared for them, that’s where my heart is. Everybody is entitled to

a good, healthy meal.” But that’s not all Joan does to support Food

& Friends. In April 2017, Joan received an email with an invitation

to join Food & Friends’ monthly giving program – The Bread & Butter Club. “It’s a service that needs to be paid for and it’s

always a continuing effort. I wanted to be a part of that.” The email

the impact of investing in digital engagement to generate greater

connections and support.”

Expanding Community

WALTER AND KARLA GOLDSCHMIDT FOUNDATION SUPPORTS DEEPER CONNECTIONS ONLINE

In December 2016, the Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation awarded an incredibly generous two-year

$150,000 grant to support Food & Friends’ Specialized Nutrition Services and the organization’s digital

fundraising program. Thanks to the Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation’s $25,000 matching gift in

support of our Nutrition Services, Food & Friends continued to make a daily difference in thousands of lives.

With the Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation’s contribution, Food & Friends utilized the technical skills and

strategic expertise of The Engage Group, digital fundraising consultants, to bolster our digital fundraising program

and raise more online revenue in 2017. We did this by implementing the an email welcome series, an online virtual

giving catalog, and enhanced digital fundraising campaigns to better engage our current supporters and reach

new audiences.

EXPERTS BOLSTER FOOD & FRIENDS COMMUNICATIONS

To further engage with our community, in 2017, Food & Friends created a Board-level Communications

Committee. Made up of senior communications professionals from a variety of sectors, this committee provides

strategy and guidance to enhance Food & Friends’ visibility in the community. The creation of the committee is

tied to our strategic plan and represents our commitment to furthering Food & Friends reach, attracting new

volunteers and ensuring our services are well known in medical and patient communities.

EXPRESSING GRATITUDE TO OUR VOLUNTEERS

In 2017, we also celebrated our amazing volunteer community that has been the backbone of the organization

for so many years. We held our first ever Delivery Volunteer Car Wash, scrubbing and buffing over 25 cars, to

express our gratitude for the many miles and hours they spend on the road delivering meals.

At our annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Awards, we honored dozens of volunteers for their years of

service, including “Above and Beyond” Award Winner, Johnny Pitchford.

For the second year in a row, we were honored to be voted Best Place to Volunteer in the Washington City Paper’s Readers’ Poll.

The children and families Meredith Dillon works with at Children’s

National are grappling with the unique challenges of childhood

diabetes. They’re learning how to count carbohydrates, prepare

new types of meals and change food habits (never easy with kids!).

Many families also lack resources and access to affordable and

nutritious food. They are barely making ends meet even before

this life-altering diagnosis. In 2017, Meredith helped Food & Friends

develop new eligibility requirements specifically for children with

diabetes. In just the first few months, she referred over 15 families

to our service. “We’re so thankful to be partnering with Food &

Friends,” she says. “By offering a tangible, easy-to-access service

to our pediatric patients, we’re able to decrease the burden on our

families, giving them one less thing to worry about.” She also notes

that the meals act as long-term educational tools, giving kids and

their parents real examples of what a healthy diet looks like, creat-

ing lasting change. “Parents can see the impact, see the decrease in

blood sugar spikes. And the kids learn healthy practices early in life.

We’re very excited about this partnership.

By offering a tangible, easy-to-access service to our pediatric patients, we’re able to decrease the burden on our families, giving them one less thing to worry about."

Extending Our Lifeline

EXPANDED SERVICE FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN WITH DIABETES

In August of 2017, Food & Friends expanded its nutritionally-tailored meal services to D.C. area residents living

with poorly-controlled diabetes. The expansion leverages Food & Friends’ three decades of medical nutrition

delivery expertise, to promote positive health outcomes for people living with diabetes. The diabetic meal plan is

one of 11 specialized meal plans offered by Food & Friends.

The decision to expand our services follows a two-year pilot project conducted by Food & Friends in conjunction with

the George Washington Heart & Vascular Institute. The pilot examined the impact of tailored meals and nutrition

counseling on over 100 clients with poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes. The pilot showed positive results, improved

blood sugar levels, better medication adherence and increased knowledge about diabetes and its treatment.

In December of 2017, Food & Friends further expanded its services to children with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes,

partnering with Children’s National Health System to determine how best to serve this vulnerable population.

BRIDGES TO THE FUTURE

With an eye on our strategic plan, Food & Friends’ leadership team undertook a 2-year leadership development

project titled Leading for Impact, started in 2017 with the guidance of the Bridgespan Group. Through the program,

we are honing our theory of change and conducting research that will inform how to reach our strategic priorities.

With increasing demand for Food & Friends’ services, our project’s animating question is: How can Food & Friends

achieve greater impact with its resources?

Combined with the strategic plan, this framework will help us build a solid infrastructure so as to support future

programmatic growth. We are focused on the opportunity and capacity for expansion with the recognition that

illnesses such as cancer and diabetes are growing in their severe impact on the greater D.C. region. As we move

toward our vision of a community where everyone who is seriously ill has the nourishment they need to manage

their illness, we will leverage the support of our donors to improve the lives of even more individuals in the D.C. area.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

In April 2017, Food & Friends was thrilled to receive a $2 million gift commitment from Fleur Bresler, her son and

daughter-in-law Sidney and Phyllis Bresler, and the Bresler Foundation, Inc. The gift was announced at the 27th

Annual Chef’s Best Dinner & Auction on June 19th, which honored the entire Bresler family for their decades of

support. The multi-year gift is the largest in our organization’s history and will allow Food & Friends to vigorously

invest in the future growth of the organization. Specifically, the gift invests in the following areas as part of Food &

Friends’ 2017-2020 strategic plan:

Specialized Nutrition Services An investment in all facets of kitchen operations and meal delivery to prepare and deliver Groceries-to-Go and Home Delivered Meals to Food & Friends’ clients who have HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses that limit their ability to provide nourishment for themselves.

Capacity and Service Growth An investment to complete the first phase of Food & Friends’ strategic plan by hiring both development and program staff to augment our budget with new revenue sources and increase nutrition services to serve more individuals in need.

In recognition of this transformational gift, Food & Friends’ state-of-the-art facility was named “The William P. Bresler Building”, after Fleur’s son and Sidney’s brother, during a special ceremony on October 18th, 2017. The

family’s decision to name the building for a beloved family member reflects their devotion to their family and abiding

commitment to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Sidney and Phyllis Bresler joined Fleur, Sidney’s mother, in making this remarkable $2 million gift to invest in Food & Friends’ long-term capacity. Sidney’s brother Bill had been both a volunteer and client of Food & Friends. He passed away from AIDS in 2001, but not before he had discovered the community and care of Food & Friends. Recognizing this, it was important to Sidney and Phyllis that others like Bill would be able to receive these same services and sense of belonging. “The mission of Food & Friends is so meaningful to our family because of the social and community impact the organization has in providing something so basic: nourishment, compassion, friendship, and dignity for every individual fighting a chronic illness,” says Sidney. Adds Phyllis, “We know our philanthropy will ensure, for decades to come, that those who are facing the greatest challenge of their life, often with little or no additional resources, will be able to count on Food & Friends’ care and community as they battle their illness.”
