If trust is the heart of the relationship, interactions are the lifeblood of relationships. Without interaction you have no relationship and you provide no leadership. Interactions are the situations where a leader can provide

the most influence.

There are several types of interactions and conversations you will find yourself engaged in as a leader. They include:

• Clarifying expectations

• Giving feedback

• Seeking feedback

• Resolving conflict

• Providing an opinion

• Sharing ideas

• Asking questions

• Seeking help

• Providing a status report

The key is to make sure your interactions produce positive outcomes and leave the relationship better than you found it.

Let’s get started on this action assignment!

Successful interaction begins with the ongoing interaction you have with yourself and how you mentally prepare. Sound thinking tools are in order.

Take a minute to go back and analyze a recent interaction you have had with an associate. See if you can identify whether the thinking tools influenced the success of the interaction and, if so, how.

1. Identify and reflect on a recent conversation you had with a team member or associate.

2. How would you describe the basic interaction? What was the conversation really about? What was your MESSAGE? What was the MESSAGE of your associate?

3. What were you telling yourself? What as your SELF-TALK? Was it helpful or hindering or both?

4. How would you assess the IMPORTANCE of the ISSUE and the RELATIONSHIP? Which was more important and why?

5. How did you APPROACH the situation? Was it successful?
