Where are you from?I am from Seoul, but I was born in Morocco.

Where are you living during the year? I am currently living in near Giruem Station.

Which city would love to live in?I would love to live in California. Although cities like New York sounds exciting, I am not really a city person. I enjoy relaxed environ-ment with a health life pattern. That is why I would love to live in California.

Which is your hobby?I’ve been dancing for about three and a half years now and the motivation of pushing over my limits has been making me keep dancing. I learned to never give up and it’s always a delight to learn new skills. Playing the guitar has taught me skills to listen more carefully to the noises around me. I also feel at peace when playing the guitar. I believe we are sur-rounded by art since the day we were born. I grew up alongside with art and I participated in a lot of artistic activities. I enjoy draw-ing, painting, making miniature models and inventing new things. Working and with art, I have learned to be more realistic and creative at the same time.

Which is your lever of English? My level of English is at a point where I am able to speak, read and write.

Which are your two favorite architects in Korea and why?If I had to pick two architects that I have respect towards would be Kim Su gun and Jung Eui yop .

Which are your two favorite architects in the world and why? When I first found out I was accepted to Soongshil University’s architecture major, I searched youtube on how to architect. Then I found two most respectable architects.. They are Barry Berkus and Doug Patt. The in-teresting thing is Doug Patt was also a break dancer and his nickname was Mr. Nice. Barry Berkus is an architect in Santa Barbara in California. He shows different ways to design

and be creative. Dough Patt has taught me many skills and how to use tools when mak-ing models. He also explains histories and facts of architecture in a very comic way.

Which are the two building you considered as best architecture project in Korea and why?I believe the most interesting architecture I have seen so far would be Seoul Square in Seoul Station. On my way home at night I see the LED display of the Seoul Square build-ing. It was a very interesting method to use a building as if it was a Television.

Which are the two building you considered as a best architecture project in the World and why?The best architecture projects that I have seen so far are Mercedes-Benz Museum designed by Ben Van Berkel and Nikko Bali Hotel in Indonesia. I was inspired by the way Ben Van Berkel’s diagram, his concept and the concept of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Nikko Bali Hotel is built on a cliff and inside the cliff. It was a very interesting way of using the landscape of the cliff.

For which kind of people are you going to design in the future?1. Families- As a young boy, having a safe and comfortable home was very important to me. So I would like to pass it on to my clients. 2. People with passion, such as dancers, art-ists, musicians, and researchers. I would like to design a house for these professions be-cause I get a chance to learn about people’s interests and their needs for each profession. 3. Poor People - people with no homes and those who needs a home. So I would like to design a better home with less expense.

Why do you want to be an architect? Or what is the best to be an architect?Architecture is a way of communication. I hope one day, my design can make a family happy and comfortable for them to live in. I believe everyone needs to have a haven, a place where they can say “Home Sweet Home.” I always wanted to change the world and this is my way of making a change to the world.

GENERAL EXPLANATIONS Before I start talking about my client, I would like to briefly explain about DJs. A DJ is a person who plays music for a crowd of people. They are the energy to the party or an event. Some DJs enjoy producing music, mixing and sampling other musics. There are many types of DJs, such as, radio DJs, Club DJs, Hiphop DJs, Mobile DJs. Well each DJs differ slightly from one another, but I will be focusing more on the Hiphop DJ because my client is a Hiphop DJ. Hiphop consists of four main elements, DJ, graffiti, MC and breaking. DJing is the music form of hiphop, graffiti is the written form of hiphop, MCing is the spoken form of hiphop and breaking is the moving form of hiphop. My client is interested in all aspects of hiphop and participates in all four elements. He also produces music with his friends whenever he gets the chance.

Here is a little journal that my client wrote for me. Last night was a crazy. Lights flashing, Music blasting. I am the energy of the people. I am a DJ, also known as a disc jockey. I play music for the crowd. I usually go to events during the night time and play music for dancers. I myself am a dancer, so it’s easier for me to know what the dancers want to dance to. As soon as I wake up in the morning I drag my exhausted body to the lab. I am surrounded by music 24 hours. I turn on my laptop and start sampling music. Listening to the most popular music, I begin to imagine what I can turn it into. I deal with many different types of instruments, mostly electronic instruments. I enjoy making beats and variety of electronic sounds. After listening to music, sampling music and mixing music I have two of my friends come over and check out the music I mixed. We would discuss about the latest hits and how we can improve my music. I also meet up some people to collaborate. We would drink a couple of beers and start recording to ease the tension. There are four elements that forms hip hop. They are DJ, MC, Graffiti, and Breaking. As a hip hop lover, I try my best to learn all the skills in each element. I am also hoping that one day I could combine all these elements in to one. As a professional hip hop DJ, I’ve been using only my hands to DJ. However I would like to use my whole body to DJ. Sometimes I would have a small party at my home where people can drink, dance and listen to my music. The party concept changes from time to time. We can have a party outdoors or indoors. I believe the DJ wouldn’t be using the party room everyday, so I believe that the party room should be used for a different purpose when there isn’t a party. It could be used as a prac-tice room and a recording room. My client probably needs a space where he could concentrate or listen to music. My client also moves around from one event to another, so the house should look as welcome as possible because he would be tired after all the djing from the parties.

I’ve seen a lot of videos which people were creating acoustic music by hitting random objects, such as, pipes, walls and the floor. A Cajon is a wooden drum that creates different notes when struck. So I wanted to use this in my design.

A piano staircase isn’t a simple intertainment project, it was a psychological way to move the people. It was a project to make people use stairs instead of the escalator, I wanted to use this as a reference to have more people come to the party.

Living in an aquarium can give people different feelings. I thought it would be nice to have a party and dance while watching the fishes swim around you. In conclusion, I wanted to have the party room/ living room surrounded by an Aquarium.

While the cajon was referenced to acoustic sounds, I am refere-ing the turntable rider as an electric sounds. This project at-tatched mechanics to a bike, and it creates beats when pulling the brakes or spinning the wheel or jumping on the bike.

Ferrofluid is a nano technology which is magnetic and many people call it the “liquid magnet“. I was thinking of ways to express music, but then I found out about the ferrofluid. With unique and interesting shapes, I believe it can move the crowd.

I used the ferrofluid to express sounds, however I also wanted to express the movements and temperatures of the people in-side the house. So I thought about mood rings. Mood ring con-tains a special layer of rocks that changes color by temperature.

When I used to swim a lot, I noticed that it is hard to hear if some one was screaming underwater. So I realized that sound doesn’t travel well from water to air. Using my experience as a reference, I created a sound absorbing water wall.

Botijo is a self cooling clay jar containing water. The party room will be packed with people with their fullest energy. I thought I could use this system for the party room to make it a cool environment.

I wanted to separate the spaces between pri-vate space and social space, but have them connect to music. That is why I used a van diagram to show the connections between all spaces. A party room would be the social space and bedroom would be the private space.

Considering all the references, I wanted to dis-play the most important references of this pro-ject. I placed a piano key on the floor to rep-resent the electronic sounds can be made by hitting the floor. Also the perspective of the DJ on his corner and the crowd facing him. I also

TESTING MODEL TESTING MODEL

In this experiment, I wanted to see how sound travels. Sound is made by vibrations causing the air to vibrate. I believe it would be nice to express how music can be seen when the DJ is listening or playing music. I have tried showing these movements with glitter and water.

Here I wanted to experiment how sounds can change by the different size, shape and quanti-ties of the holes on the cajon. I experimented with one big hole and two smaller holes. I have asked several people and they exclaimed that the one circular hole has a better sound.

Before exprimenting we need to know how sound works. Sound waves exist as different pressures through an object, such as, air, water and solid. When you hit an object the vibrations from the object is passed on to the air and vibra-tions of the particles in the air are passed on to the human ear. That is how we can hear noises. These vibrations can be measured with a spe-cial machine. Decibel is the logarithmic unit that indicates the ratio of a physical quantity(power and intensity). These sound waves can sound different by the holes on the cajon, due to the speed of the air rushing out of the cajon when being struck. I have made a cajon with no holes, a cajon with one big hole and a cajon with two smaller holes. The cajon without anyholes sounded a little dull and it sounded like the sound was trapped in-side the cajon. However the cajon with one hole sounded a lot louder and had a more rounded sound, but clear. The cajon with two smaller holes seem to have a shorter sound. Since all the air rushed out through the two holes. In conclusion it was better to have one bigger hole than having two smaller holes, but this could be debatable depending on individual’s personsal taste. I have imagined many different methods to ex-press the sound waves when music is being played. I thought of movements of the water, ferrofluid, vibrating objects and flashing lights. For my experiment I have tried using glitters to display the movements of sound. I believe this was a simple experiment though successful. Many of the students were fascinated by the beauty of the glittering particles when the music was being played.

Working with my team, Kang Jin, My designs were becoming more clear. He has helped me put the puzzles together to bring up the final design. He has inspired me to use Botijo. He also gave me an idea to put the party room in the basement to prevent sound from com-ing out of the house.

HIGLIGHTED ASPECTS

my team model

My first impression on this site? When I first stepped into the ground of Heyri, I noticed that the buildings had their individual characteristics and they were randomly placed. I also felt like the site was a very quiet area.

How was the weather like? The weather in Heyri is known to be sunny and nice. I have talked to a neighbor next to the site and they have told me the weather here isn’t usually very windy. Hearing this, I thought of ways to use the sunlight to make rooms cooler or warmer.

How are the people around the site? There weren’t a lot of people walking around the site; there were only a couple of people walking around whenever I went. I believe this was due to the bad weather. I have heard that a lot of people come to Heyri for the galleries and to look at build-ings. I thought it would be nice if the DJ was able to play his music for the people who visit Heyri.

What does the buildings look like? One thing I noticed when I looked at the buildings around the site was that most of the houses were very geometric shaped. Geometric shaped as in Square or block shaped buildings. I also noticed some houses had wooden blinds covering the houses. I wondered about the purpose of these wooden blinds and I came to a conclusion that they are either for block-ing sounds, winds or design or privacy. I believe they all vary from each houses. Some wooden blinds covered an area where there was an outdoor pathway between two buildings. So I assume that the wooden blinds are used to have privacy because I couldn’t see what was behind the wooden blinds until I got closer to it. I think it is important to follow trends or be sync with the surrounding buildings. It is good to have a unique design however it should blend well with the surrounding buildings and nature.

How does it look from far away? When entering the site, the first thing I noticed was the mountains. Since the site is surrounded by mountains, it gave a safe feeling as if you were being surrounded by guards protecting you. Also the nearest mountain or hill was something my client would enjoy looking at while listening to music.

How does it feel on the site? When I stood at the middle of the site, I felt like the site was really big. It would be amazing to have an outdoor party during the weekends, but the houses that were closer to the site worried me. I believe it would give some limitations to the needs of the clients.

As a DJ how would you feel?If I were a DJ, I would feel either good or bad about the site. Personally I would like to have a calm peaceful atmosphere because I could concentrate more on making music. It would also be nice to record at a quiet place. During the weekends since there are more people, he could open an open party for the people, since the site is a very large piece of land. A DJ is usually surrounded by a large crowd full of adrenaline, so it would be nice to have a getaway sometimes and hang out with a couple of friends and de-bate about music. There are also nice cafés nearby, where he could go for a coffee and watch people walking by.

My professor has taught me and showed me a variety of architectures and ideas to broaden our minds.

My professor and me peers have helped me ways to develop ideas. Especially by looking at other student’s projects I got inspired by their ideas that I wanted to apply it to my designs.

By making this booklet and having a presenta-tion every week helped me organize my ideas. Organizing ideas helps you get back on track when you feel lost.

The biggest problem I have when doing archi-tecture is transfering ideas in to a building. At first I had a lot of ideas, which is a good thing. However later on I didn’t concentrate on one idea. So it was hard to come up with a concept.

During the semester, I learned various exercises and tests to create a base for my building. There was popup book making, writing, experiment-ing, model making and pairing up with a partner. I especially enjoyed the experiments.

One thing I had trouble in life is starting strong, finishing weak or not even finish at all. So this semster I tried extra harder at the end with a lot of pep-talk from my professor. I have learned to start stong and finish stronger.

Since this is legitly the first time doing actual ar-chitect works, it was hard to imagine the scales when making models. I have learned it is always good to have a human model to guide you how big the buildings were.

GENERAL EXPLANATIONS The Culture Shock is a hiphop crew actively working in Korea. They believe that to-day’s hiphop scene is going to a disaster. So they believe it is important to bring back the old school hiphop. They wanted people in Korea to experience the true elements of hiphop; DJ, Graffiti, Breaking, and MC. The Culture Shock crew has members of six and they all cover dif-ferent elements of hiphop. They usually go around doing showcases or entering competitions or practicing. They also would like to hold a workshop for the new generations of hiphop. The six members all have a different schedule during their day, but they do meet up at the end of the day to discuss and relax. The crews like to hang out during the weekends and meet new and different hiphop artists and practice together. Since they practice a lot I tried to find ways to stop sound from coming out of the building and also express music visually.

Egg trys are sometimes used in home studios as a sound dif-fuser. I tried to make different shapes of buildings and I stum-bled across the egg tray, which was a very interesting sturdy structure. It will be used as a sound diffuser and a structure.

My main goal is to combime the four elements of Hiphop and allow people to experience Hiphop in Korea. I wanted to have graffiti artists to have places they can paint their art works and thats where the egg racks came in handy.
