The Diplomat external planter, is a versatile,multi-use and cost effective planter, available in achoice of materials and finishes to suit yourscheme and budget.The planter is available in either FSC irokohardwood or a FSC treated European, joineryquality redwood. Planters up to 2.8x2.8m plansize will be delivered fully assembled ready forplanting.Larger planters will be manufactured in sectionsand delivered for assembly on site.Other shapes can be manufactured and suppliedincluding:- triangular, hexagonal, octagonal andany other irregular straight sided shape.Planters can be manufactured with additionalsteel support to enable the planters to be movedwhen fully planted.

General

Section thro’ planter

The Diplomat, all timber planter, is constructed bybolting 95x45mm section vertical walling slattedpanels to 95x95mm section posts. A 45x45mmcorner fillet is fitted into the external corner toensure a neat detail.A 95x45mm section timber top capping is screwfixed to the wall panel. The screw holes will becountersunk and plugged.The internal base is constructed using100x47mm sawn treated softwood bearers, fixedto the posts and fitted to joist hangers fixed to themain bearers. Treated plywood sheeting is fixeddown onto the bearers. 50mm high timber blocksare fitted to the underside of the bearers, toensure that the load is safely transferred to theground.When fully constructed, the inside of the planteris fully lined with a geo-textile lining, that allowswater to drain through whilst retaining the soilfines.

FSC treated softwood and iroko hardwoodwill be left natural to reduce the need forre-staining and help reduce maintenancecosts.

Hardwood planters are constructed fromFSC iroko hardwood, from sustainablesources. Softwood planters areconstructed using FSC European redwoodthat has been Wolmanit CX treated, for adesired service life of 30 years minimum.All mild steel fixings will be M12 size andhave a bright zinc plated finish.Planters will be fitted with a geotextile filterfabric lining, which allows the water todrain through the planter, while retainingthe fill material.

Planters up to 2.8 x 2.8m will be deliveredto site fully assembled for off loading andpositioning on site. Planters larger than2.8m will be supplied in sections forbolting together on site.

Tree anchor fittingsDiplomat planters can be manufactured andsupplied to include a range of optionalaccessories.Planters can incorporate; adjustable feet, treeanchor fittings, watering systems, bench seating,LED lighting, pergolas and trellis panels.

Diplomat planters can be supplied with aninternal steel frame to allow the planters to bemoved whilst fully planted. The steel frameprovides additional strength and ensures suitablesupports for the forklift tines.

Diplomat planters can be fitted with galvanisedmild steel tree anchor points. They can be fittedat the bottom of the planter to help support theroot ball and they can be fitted at the top of theplanter to help provide support for the tree.The tree anchors are manufactured using25x5mm mild steel flat. They have two punchedslots and are fitted to the projecting bolt ends onthe inside of the planter. The tree anchors are hotdip galvanised.

ACCESSORIES

Integral planter benches, with or withoutarmrests, can be supplied with Diplomat planters.As standard 2 bench designs are available. Otherdesigns can be included upon request. TheBexley bench consists of 4 no. 70x45mm timberslats and the Henley bench has 2 no. 145x45mmwide bench slats. The timber slatted benches boltonto galvanised mild steel brackets, attached tothe planter sides. Benches can be fitted to 1, 2, 3or 4 sides to suit your requirements. The choiceof material and finish is the same as for theplanter. As standard the brackets will have agalvanised finish. As an optional extra, they canbe polyester powder coated.

By extending the planter posts, pergola structuresand trellis panels can be integrated into theplanter construction. Pergolas and trellis allowhigh level planting and create shaded areas forseating.

LED lighting

The Mona Plant System (MPS) is an advanced, wellproven and easy to use subterranean irrigationsystem. It is the cost effective and environmentallyfriendly solution for both interior and exteriorlandscaping.

The Mona Plant System ensures that the water andnutrients are delivered in the right quantity to theroot of the plants, resulting in improved rootdevelopment and optimal plant growth.

General

Factory installation

All necessary water tanks, pipes, end caps and airpipes with level indicator, are factory fitted into theplanters / tree containers, prior to delivery.

Ensure that the distance between the top of the linktank and the lowest part of the root does not exceed150mm.

Filling planters

The system consists of storage tanks, flexible linkingpipes and a flexible filler pipe with filler pipe cap.The system delivers water directly to the roots viacapillary action, eliminating water wastage. Thisencourages deep root growth, improving long termdrought resistance. The cap and lid provides aneasy access point for watering and soluble fertiliserapplication.Installation

General

The system consists of a 300 micron thick blackpolythene liner, hydroleca (pulverised ashgranules) sacks and a rigid plastic filler pipe.

The system delivers water directly to the roots via50mm diameter, rigid plastic pipe, eliminatingwater wastage. This encourages deep rootgrowth, improving long term drought resistance.The high level filler pipe provides an easy accesspoint for watering and soluble fertiliserapplication.

Planters are supplied with the Water System 1already installed.

Ensure the hydroleca sacks are in the correctposition. They will move during transportation.Check that all the plastic pipe connections areproperly fitted. The planter is ready for drainagematerial, filling and planting.

General details

The M30 adjustable foot with swivel base, is screwed into adjustablefoot mounting plate.The mild steel mounting plate with adjustable foot housing, is fixed tothe underside of the planter base.A M30 hex full nut is welded to the underside of the mounting plate.The adjustable foot is adjusted with a 26mm wrench.

For extra security, it ispossible to drill and boltthrough the base of theadjustable feet.

As an extra cost option, Street Design planterscan be supplied with adjustable feet. They allowthe planter to be levelled, before filling andplanting.Adjustable feet are particularly useful if theplanters are likely to be relocated to a newposition.The adjustable foot screw fits into a hex nut,located on the underside of the planter base.

Diplomat planters can be manufactured andsupplied to include plinth, side and top lighting, allspecified to illuminate the planter or thesurrounding paving.Plant, up lighting and down lighting can be usedto create a dramatic planting scheme byintroducing colours or feature spot lighting.We have created seven types of basic lighting toenhance your scheme and the planting. Theseven types of lighting are shown below. Thelighting types can be specified individually or theycan be grouped together to create a range oflighting effects.In its basic form, the lighting is available as coolwhite, warm white, blue, green or red LED units.More complex lighting can be supplied, includingtwilight switches, PIR sensors, timers, infrared,ultraviolet and royal blue emitters, PWMdimmers, RGB, UPS, DMX and remote controlunits.

Plinth lighting - LED lighting is fitted to the inside of the planter,located under the base floor, offering a pool of light around thebottom of the planter.

Street Design is pleased to announce newdesigns of wood and metal planters featuringintegrated lighting as standard. These designsmake full use of safe, eco-friendly, low-power,low-voltage, high-efficiency LED lighting with abroad choice of placements, brightness andcolours.Our LED lighting units can handle all of the tasksformerly undertaken by tungsten, halide andfluorescent lamps, and out-perform them in everydepartment. They are extremely flexible - we cansupply almost any configuration of lighting to aclient's specification using our standard lightingunits in these purpose-designed planters.The lighting units can be powered by either a lowvoltage DC supply or mains electricity. The choiceof light levels and power units is also broad. Ourstandard power supply pumps out 12 Volts at 4Amps, in LED terms enough for a very brightplanter. The entire range is from 1 Watt to 1,000Watts.This page outlines the different types of lightingavailable and shows examples of the uses towhich the lighting units can be put.

Overview

Plant lighting - LED lights aresupplied to illuminate andmake features of the planting

Plinth lighting is available in warmand cool white, standard LEDcolours, and RGB strips that allowalmost any colour to be mixed.Plinth lighting can also bespecified for one or more sides(or arcs) of a planter and at anypower level between 1 Watt permetre and 40 Watts per metre.Our standard plinth light is warmwhite and operates at 6 Watts permetre and provides a noticeablelight up to one metre from theedge of the planter (though thisdepends on ambient lightinglevels and the reflectivity of theground surface).

Side lighting

Side lighting is offered as feature,decorative lighting from cut-outsin the horizontal timber slats. Lowpowered LED ribbons provide apoint of interest on these planters.These lamps are very noticeableeven under extremely brightconditions, and are quite dazzlingat night.

Plant lighting

The plant lighting array ispositioned down at planting level.Four LED lighting battens arefixed to the inside edges at thetop of the planter. The lights areangled up and illuminate theunderside of the flora, a strikingand unusual effect. Fortunately,the plants don't seem to mind.

Spotlights fitted within the plantercan be angled up to illuminatelarge plants, bushes and treesseveral metres above the plantersurface. LED emitters rated at 1,3 or 5 Watts are equipped with 5,15, 25 or 45 degree collimatinglenses to send a narrow beam ofwhite or coloured light toilluminate the chosen feature highabove the planter. The layout ofthe planting can conceal the lightsources to enhance the effect.

Down Lighting in this context isabout mounting a lamp with alens and reflector above theplanting area to provide top-downillumination. The reflectors comein different shapes and sizes tomatch the light distribution to theshape of the planter. Theproximity of the light source andthe use of an opaque reflectorminimises both the powerrequirements and the unwanted,upward, light pollution.

Down lighting - An LED light ispole mounted in the centre ofthe planter, illuminating thecomplete planter top andplanting. Depending on theheight, the surroundingground can be illuminated ifrequired.

Side lighting - holes are cutinto the side walls of theplanter to allow LED spotlighting to be fitted.

MATERIAL FINISHES

FSC treated softwood with a natural finish

FSC treated redwood standard finish

As standard, all FSC treated redwood planterswill be supplied with a natural finish. Thepreservative treatment process will colour thetimber a light brown/green. Left to weathernaturally, the timber will eventually turn a silvergrey colour.

FSC treated redwood wood optional finish

As an optional extra, the FSC treated redwoodcan be supplied with a stained finish. This will beapplied after the timber treatment process. Thestandard stain will be 3 coats of Ronseal quickdrying water based stain. The standard colour willbe teak. Other stains and colours can be appliedupon request. As part of the future maintenance,all stained products will require additionalstaining. The frequency of re-staining will dependon the location, use and the effects of weatheringand traffic film.The products should be cleaned down, verylightly sanded and re-coated with the originalstain.

FSC iroko hardwood standard finish

As standard, all FSC iroko hardwood planters willbe supplied with a natural finish. Due to thenature of the material and the density of thegrain, iroko hardwood is not capable of taking apreservative treatment. Iroko hardwood is anaturally durable material, giving a lifeexpectancy in excess of a treated softwood. Leftto weather naturally, the timber will eventuallyturn a silver grey colour.

As an optional extra, the FSC iroko hardwoodplanters can be supplied with a stained finish.The standard stain will be 3 coats of Ronsealquick drying water based stain. Diplomat planters up to 2.8 x 2.8m will be delivered to site fully assembled for offloading and positioning on site. Planters larger than 2.8m will be supplied insections for bolting together on site.

All treated softwood products are manufactured using materials obtained fromgrowers who operate under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).All iroko hardwood products are manufactured using materials obtained fromgrowers who operate under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

FSC treated softwood and iroko hardwood will be left natural to reduce the needfor re-staining and help reduce maintenance costs. If required, timber planters canbe supplied with a stained finish using 3 coats of quick drying water based woodstain, to the colour of you choice.Mild steel components will be left with a galvanised finish only. If required, after hotdip galvanising, the mild steel components can be polyester powder coated, to thecolour of your choice. The galvanised parts are prepped, treated and sprayed withthe polyester powder, before being baked in an oven.Stainless steel components will have a brushed finish. If required, the stainlesssteel components can be supplied with a bead blasted finish.

Hardwood products are constructed using FSC iroko hardwood, from sustainablesources. Softwood products are constructed using FSC European redwood thathas been Wolmanit CX treated, for a desired service life of 30 years minimum.All mild steel fabricated components will be hot dip galvanised after fabrication toBS EN ISO 1461:2009.All stainless steel fabricated components will be grade 304. Grade 316 can bespecified if the location or project requires it.All mild steel fixings will be bright zinc plated, and all stainless steel fixings will beA2 (grade 304). A4 (grade 316) can be specified if the location or project requiresit.Planters will be fitted with a geotextile filter fabric lining, which allows the water todrain through the planter, while retaining the fill material.

Guarantee

All planters are guaranteed for 15 yearsminimum. This guarantee is a minimum and isdependant on the product not being misused orabused. All the materials, treatments andconstruction will allow for a life expectancyconsiderably longer than this.

Pergola structures can be manufactured as anintegral part of the planter construction. Thecorner post can be extended to carry the upperhorizontal 145x45mm section timber bearers andcross bearers.

Trellis panels can be manufactured as an integralpart of the planter construction. The corner postcan be extended to carry the horizontal andvertical trellis timber slats.

The lighting is available as cool white, warmwhite, blue, green or red LED units. Morecomplex lighting can be supplied, includingtwilight switches, PIR sensors, timers, infrared,ultraviolet and royal blue emitters, PWMdimmers, RGB, UPS, DMX and remote controlunits.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Natural finish treated redwood can be washed down with a mild detergent.More stubborn surface marks can be removed with a light, hand sand with a120 grit, or higher grade sandpaper. Excessive sanding should be avoided.

Maintaining the optional FSC treated redwood finish

Stained, treated redwood will need to be re-coated after a period of time.The stain can either start to fade, become dull (oxidised) or incur somesurface break up. Lightly sand down the timber using a 120 grit, or highergrade sandpaper. We recommend that the timber is re-stained with theoriginal stain colour and manufacturer. Details can be obtained from Streetdesign Limited. Apply the stain evenly, with brush strokes running parallelwith the woodgrain, in thin layers, building up the finish as recommended bythe stain manufacturer.

All Diplomat planter products are manufactured using quality materials, treatments and finishes.The timber components are manufactured from either FSC treated redwood or FSC iroko hardwood.All products require a varied amount of maintenance, depending on the environment, usage andweather conditions. Natural timber will only require cleaning. In time, stained timber will requirere-coating.
