Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau

Museum of the Shenandoah Valley Closes July 31

Organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau includes more than 70 original works by the artist many

consider the creator of the Art Nouveau style. Vintage lithographs, including some unique proof copies, original drawings and paintings,

books and advertising ephemera, make up one of the largest private

collections of Mucha's work. This exhibition shows Mucha at the height of his career in Paris during the years 1890-1910. His designs for

posters, calendars, books and advertising labels circulated widely throughout Europe and America, and his Art Nouveau style dominated

visual culture and graphic design for years.

The exhibition is drawn from the holdings of the Dhawan Collection, Los Angeles, which is one of the largest and finest collections of Alphonse

Mucha's work in the United States.

Billboard images (above) feature details of the following works by Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) from the Dhawan Collection: Monaco,

Monte-Carlo, 1897, color lithograph on paper; Salon des Cent, XXme Exposition, 1897, color lithograph on paper; and Job, 1896, color

Glenn Miller Orchestra

Glen Echo

July 30

Just saying the "Glenn Miller Orchestra" immediately conjures up images of the Big Band Era. Since the time he formed his own orchestra in 1937

until his untimely disappearance over the English Channel in 1944, the Glenn Miller Orchestra provided the music that was the backbone of

the Lindy Hop era. Classic songs like Tuxedo Junction, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Sunrise Serenade, Pennsylvania 6-5000, In the Mood, and

more, will never go out of style.

Deco Japan: 1920-1945

The style that came to be known as art deco, which flourished from the 1920s to 1940s, was a vivid reflection of the modern era and the vitality

of the machine age. Between the wars, as normalcy returned to politics, jazz music blossomed, and the flapper redefined the modern woman, art

deco left its mark on every form of visual art.

Originating in Europe, the new art form, characterized by rectilinear

shapes, geometric patterns, and bold colors, traveled the world as an ambassador for modernism and style. Deco Japan, 1920-1945, a special

exhibition on view at Hillwood beginning in June 2016, will explore how the Japanese interpreted the style and transformed it through their own

rich art and craft traditions. The art deco creations of Japan are vivid translations of both tradition and innovation-a visual record of the

artistic explosion that ushered Japan from its conventional artistic format into the Modern era.

Featuring a wide range of media-sculpture, painting, prints, ceramics,

lacquerware, jewelry, textiles, furniture, and graphic ephemera-this traveling exhibition brings Japanese art deco to Washington for the first

time. It builds on the passion that Hillwood founder Marjorie

Merriweather Post had for decorative art, focusing on her most transformative era, when she epitomized the flapper lifestyle and

developed her own taste for finely-crafted objects. Displayed among multiple buildings upon the 25-acre campus, Deco Japan will also bring

focus to the Japanese-style Garden, one of Hillwood's most beloved features.

This lecture demonstrates the broad permutations of the so-called deco

style, and its diverse applications in art made for the exhibition hall, the street, the body, and the home. The talk reveals the decisions the

inspired the collection, and the ideas that inform the exhibition. It analyzes how deco expresses Japan's cosmopolitan urbanism of the

1920s and 1930s, and the muscular traditionalism that was often used to project the power of Japan as a military power. The presentation

concludes with examples of Japanese art deco beyond the exhibition, including architecture, gardens and collectibles.

The art deco period-from the 1920s to the 1940s-is known for blending modern decorative arts with industrial design and is today synonymous

with luxury and glamour. The automobile, a rapidly evolving mechanical child of the 20th century, thus became the perfect metal canvas upon

which to express the popular art deco style.

While today manufacturers often strive for economy and efficiency, this

was a period when innovation and elegance reigned supreme. Influenced by an international art movement, automakers embraced the sleek, new

streamline forms and aircraft-inspired materials to create memorable automobiles that still thrill all who see them. With bold, sensuous

shapes; hand-crafted details; and luxurious finishes, the 14 automobiles and three motorcycles in the exhibition provide stunning examples of car

design ... with artistic flair.

In the art deco era, as Western clothes became popular, the kimono in

Japan continued to be everyday wear with new designs and motifs. The importation of Western dyes and machinery in the Meiji period

(1868-1912) had a profound effect on the Japanese kimono industry. Fabrics were designed to be exhibited at the World Expositions and

Japan's domestic textile industry was gradually integrated into world textile markets. The late Meiji period saw the emergence of Japanese

department stores, such as the Mitsukoshi, new advertising techniques,

the rise of a largely female consumer base, and distribution of fashion magazines, often inspired by Western models.

The Taishō period (1912-1926) is characterized by a great urban

growth, particularly in Tokyo. Women gradually entered the work force and gained more financial power. Although Western-style clothes

became popular, the kimono continued to be everyday wear. The motifs were dramatically enlarged and new designs appeared, sometimes

inspired by Western styles such as the Art Deco. In creating such boldly patterned kimono the designers benefited from new types of silk and

innovative patterning techniques, making relatively inexpensive, highly fashionable garments available to more people than ever before. These

vibrant kimono styles remained popular until the 1950s.

Japanese Women in the Art Deco Era

Hillwood

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

The Deco era ushered in a world of modernity that was transformational

for women worldwide.

Scholars Tom Looser and Estella Chung discuss the broad range of modern women in Japan, from the flapper-like moga to the upwardly

mobile educated ojōsan. In both America and Japan, the twentieth-century ushered in diverse, new experiences for women including

schoolgirls, suffragists, striking textile workers, patriotic women and housewives. Tom Looser and Estella Chung will discuss the varied

experience of modern women and explore interesting parallels in Hillwood founder Marjorie Merriweather Post's flapper lifestyle and

developed her own taste for finely-crafted objects.

Design in Japan

Hillwood Wednesday, October 26, 2016

Japan's love affair with Art Deco resulted in exchanges between native and Western architects and interior designers.

Japan's love affair with Art Deco is a fascinating case study of cultural

appropriation, which this talk will place in a larger context of exchanges between native and Western architects and interior designers, from

approximately 1915 to 1950. Protagonists ranged from Henri Rapin, the Parisian artist-tastemaker behind the decoration of the exclusive

residence of Prince Asaka to Antonin Raymond, a former employee of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose work in Tokyo will also be examined. Tokyo's

modernization, precipitated by the 1923 earthquake, created an

environment tailored to Japan's Modern Girl and business elite and entailed emulating department stores or bank buildings from both the

City of Lights and Manhattan. Beyond chic and glamour, a harsher brand of Art Deco was also used, in both France and Japan, as a nationalistic

and war-related medium. With Art Deco, Japanese architecture started its ascending trajectory as today's design powerhouse.
