From the Editor

This issue is encouraging members to renew their

memberships if they wish to train next year.

It is essential to be a financial member to vote at the AGM but,

possibly more importantly, people who do not renew this year

will have no insurance cover next year and cannot take part in

classes without being a liability for the club.

Although our financial year ends at the end of September the

Club covers the VCA levy until the end of the year allowing

people at least 2 months to renew.

It is great to see so many new members especially children.

Just a reminder however that children under 12 years must

always be accompanied by an adult!

For achieving his UD (Utility Dog) title at our Trial day, with his German shorthaired pointer, named Zuz. The Utility Dog title is a great achievement, as there are 7 exercises that the dog and handler must pass. The team need to pass all parts of each exercise and every exercise to gain a pass. The team need to achieve 3 passes under at least 2 different judges, with a minimum score of 170 out of 200

points. Photo by Lynn Phillips

Dear Howler Reader,

Written by Glyn Burnup

You can see how the circle becomes reinforced: Owner

calls - dog plays - owner calls again but does nothing

different than last time - dog plays - owner shouts more

aggressively, but no incentive has been offered to come - dog still doesn't come and may even move away.

Owner by this time is angry and possibly embarrassed, if

there are other people about and tries to catch said evil disobedient dog by chasing and repeatedly shouting the

dog's name with a few choice expletives thrown in. Don't

be tempted to go to your dog... after all, we're supposed to the smart ones! If you go to your dog, that will

become the default position..... You are the one with a

great recall!! I was training my dog one Wednesday night and

dutifully put my arms in the air and muttered 'Come'.

Anna De Bono looked at me and said "I won't come to that... That was boring. You must make yourself the

most exciting thing on the field!", and she is absolutely

right. Thanks, Anna!

Training and Fun should be the same thing.

PS: When training, remember to wear safe footwear. Thongs can be dangerous to both you and your dog.

for Thought” at Clubhouse Reception.

This is our 4th “Paws for Thought” article for the Howler

and as yet we are feedbackless. Have the articles been of

any help to you, or should we add an extra puzzle or two? Tell us what you want by putting your thoughts in

the box on the reception desk in the club house.

In the last Paws for Thought article, we talked about ‘The

Recall’ and ways to help your puppy understand just

what you mean by the command 'Come'. However, we thought we would address The Recall for those of you

who may be dealing with an older dog or one which has

started to misbehave.

First, catch dog! You can try running in the opposite

direction and making silly HAPPY noises. Or you could try

throwing a few delicious food treats as close as possible to the dog, then move away whilst still throwing treats.

Once you have ‘caught’ your dog, give him lots of praise,

tickles and rewards. DO NOT LET YOUR DOG OFF AGAIN until you have retrained yourself and your dog by going

back to square one and making it fun for both.

Now let’s take a look at some common issues.

The ‘My dog runs away’ problem... If this has

been your experience in the past then it makes sense to keep your dog on leash... to start. However this problem

must be worked on to rebuild the dog’s confidence and

trust in the owners ability to control a situation. Go back to “on lead recalls” at home, in class, on your walks and

in the park. Make it fun! Once you are happy and

confident with this part of your dog’s training, start using a long lead (say 20 to 30 metres). Do note that the

extendable leads are not necessarily the best for this task

as the lead is very thin and can cut your hands and can be difficult to control.

This is a project which will take time and patience and

your training must never be done when you are angry or unfocused. This has to be very fun training!

The ‘My Dog won't come back’ problem... The

most important thing in a dog's life is food, followed very

closely by play. Let's try thinking like a dog... “Woof! I'm

off lead and having a great time playing! Oh! My master is calling! Hi Master, I’m here! Wait, why are you putting

a lead on me? Why has my fun play time stopped? Why

are you dragging me away from my friends? No reward

for coming? Are you kidding me?!??”

Once your dog has figured out that ‘coming’ is an

unrewarded, lousy command, they will become less and less happy to return. This must be dealt with quickly, as

what your dog observes is; I am rewarded with extra

play time by NOT coming.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS Q & A Frequently Asked Questions

How do I renew my NODC membership?

Bring your dog’s latest Vaccination Certification(s) or Antibody titre test(s). Approach a

committee member at the Clubhouse for a Membership Renewal Form. Fill it out, sign

and hand it in to a committee member to verify and to SIGHT your Vaccination Cert or

Antibody Titre Test Cert. Once that’s done, please pay at the Front Desk and receive

your new name tag!

When can I renew my NODC membership?

You can renew your membership every Sunday from 9am to 10am from now until 6

December 2015.

How much will renewal fees cost?

You only need to pay the Annual Membership fee and the VCA levy. Generally, Single

Membership fee is $30 and Dual Membership fee is $50. Do note we offer discounts

for Junior and Concession membership renewals, so please approach a committee

member to discuss your options. Supporting paperwork required.

I want to renew but I’m unable to physically get to the Clubhouse before 6 December,

what are my options?

No problem! Just send us an email or call us and let us know your situation. We can

mail you a form to fill in, sign and return with a cheque. You will still need to bring your

vaccination/antibody titre test cert for us to sight when you collect your nametag.

I don’t have a dog at the moment but will be getting a puppy next year. Should I still

renew now?

The choice is entirely yours! If you renew before 6 December 2015, you won’t need to

pay the Joining Fee or attend the Introduction Class again. We recommend renewing

because our membership is an annual type, so whether you join in March, July or

October, you would still be paying for the full year.

Can I become a Club volunteer?

YES! We are so happy to hear you want to help! Please come have a chat with any

committee member at the Clubhouse and we will let you know what help we need and

you can decide what suits you.

Can I change my membership when renewing?

Yes. You can add a new member to a single to make a dual membership or vice versa.

The appropriate new fee will be charged. Dogs can also be added or removed.

Membership cards cannot be informally passed to another person. All changes need to

be approved by the club. Contributed by Cheryl Yeoh

The Members Individual Testing Day is a day where members are put through the Class exercises with an Instructor, individually in a ring. This day was a great success and we need to congratulate all those members who achieved a pass on the day. We do hope you had an enjoyable time. To all those people who volunteered; Robert and Stephen and those who helped set up & dismantle the rings and carried down equipment. Barbara, Denise and John who cooked the BBQ, all the instructors who judged the competitors and Margaret Deakes for judging the higher classes. Nancy and Judith and Kirti who kept the office ticking over and Ray in the kitchen , please accept our grateful thanks. Without your help these days would just not be possible. Glenys Barnes
