Child Protection Policy

Policy Statement

Strathendrick Rugby Football Club recognises that all those involved in the coaching or supervision of children associated with the Club have a duty to safeguard the welfare of these children. This duty extends to the prevention of physical, sexual or emotional abuse of children associated with the Club, and shall be applied regardless of a child’s sex, race or religion.

All Club coaches are subject to PVG checks. Parents may occasionally be asked to assist in some coaching situations, but only do so under the supervision of a PVG checked and qualified coach.

The Club’s Child Protection Officer is:

Sheena Adam Tel: 07710-417144Email: [email protected]

A copy of the Club’s full Child Protection and Good Practice document is availablefrom Sheena or from the Club Secretary, Ian McVean on [email protected]

Any matter or questions relating to Child Protection and the Club’s activities should be referred in confidence to Sheena as Child Protection Officer.

2. Never argue with the referee

3. Control your temper

4. Work equally hard for yourself and your team - your team’s performance will benefit and so will your own

5. Be a good sport. Applaud all good play, whether by your team or your opponent.

6. Respect your opponent. Treat all players like you yourself would like to be treated

7. At the final whistle applaud and thank your opponents and the referee for the match

8. Win with humility. Lose with dignity.

at players for mistakes or losing a match.

3. Insist on fair and disciplined play. Do not tolerate foul play, fighting or foul language. Be prepared to take

off an offending player.

4. Never criticise the referee or touch judges during or after a match in front of players or spectators. Always

to your Club

2. Encourage your child always to play to the Laws of the game

3. Never ridicule or yell at players for making mistakes or losing a match

4. Remember that young people learn best by example

5. Do not publicly question the referee’s judgement and never their honesty

to provide recreational activities for your children.

Strathendrick Rugby Football ClubMini Rugby Section

General Arrangements for Season 2017-18

AgesThe Mini Section covers all children up to and including those in Primary 7. Although mainly aimed at children from P3 up, we are very happy for younger boys and girls to try the game, and we will make special efforts to accommodate them. We have a large group of current P1/P2 children. Children below P4 play touch or tag (non-contact) rugby.

CoachesAssuming adequate numbers in each, each age group is coached separately by a team comprising a leader and two or more qualified coaches. This year’s lead coaches include:

Andrew Falconer, Campbell Millar, Jason Dawes, Andy Thomson, Guy Keating, Ewan CurrieSteve McCooey is our Coach Co-ordinator.

Especially with younger players, it is always great to have a Mum or Dad around to help marshal the children, hold kit or keep the water bottle. So if any parents can help in this way, they will be very welcome. We welcome and will support any new volunteers who would like to help with coaching, although SRU rules now require that all regular helpers are PVG checked at a very early stage.

CoachingCoaching has a strong element of FUN, and involves a mixture of traditional coaching sessions and coached games. Apart from early season and holiday weekends, weekend rugby is mostly coached games with other clubs, running into a series of more competitive club festivals and tournaments towards the back end of the season.Coaching will generally be on Sunday mornings at 10.30-12.30pm am at Fintry. Hot showers are available after training and matches, so a towel can be a useful addition to the kit bag!!! If the weather turns very bad, we may use the facilities at Balfron High especially during the period December through February, but we will always try to be outdoors at Fintry if we can. Details will be advised by text (see below).

Children should arrive in time to start their warm-up at these times. On cold or wet days, please be prepared for an early end to the session.

Games/Matches/Festivals & TournamentsThe timing for these varies depending on host club arrangements. Indicative times are included in the Fixture List, but are subject to change. Definite times are advised by text message and social media a few days beforehand. While many families choose to meet at the ground, for away games, a group usually meets locally, often at Killearn Health Centre, to combine transport. Please remember - times can be varied from the original fixture list, so please check before the day.

What to wearThe most important thing is for the children to be warmly dressed - it is not a fashion show !Children should wear a suitable shirt - long sleeves if possible - and shorts. As the weather gets colder, add more layers of T-shirts and/or thermal gear underneath. A track suit/training top is a good investment, although be prepared for it to come home muddy. In winter, a woolly hat is also a good idea. Ideally, children should have boots, but if they are just coming for a trial visit, a pair of old trainers will suffice. If boots are a problem, let us know - we can usually lay our hands on a good used pair. Make sure the children have long warm socks (two pairs in the winter).

For match kit – which is also suitable for coaching days, please see separate sheet.

Points of Contact – getting in touch by SMS text

To allow us to contact everyone quickly in the event of late changes to plan, we ask all parents to supply at least one mobile phone number. We can then text you with the relevant information. Please remember to advise us if you change your number, so you stay in the loop. This is particularly important as poorer weather comes in. If you can also give an email address that you use regularly, that also helps.

Other Contacts

The lead coach at each Age Group will maintain a list of contact details for each child. We will also provide you with their contact email address and mobile number.

The Club has its own website www.pitchero.com/clubs/strathendrickrfc

You can also get information on Facebook https://en-gb.facebook.com/Strathendrick-RFC-minis

Or on Twitter and Periscope @SRFC_minis

Hopefully this will ensure that everyone is kept in touch

STRATHENDRICK MINI RUGBY KIT ARRANGEMENTS

The Club has an arrangement with Provan Sports who stock and order our kit. At present, kit should be ordered directly from Provan, by telephone or on their website (see below), although we are looking at arrangements to be able to supply from the Club.

The Kit comprises:

Clothing

1. Canterbury Blue & White hooped shirt with embroidered club badge2. Navy Blue or black rugby shorts3. Red socks

Children should be kitted out with this as soon as possible after the start of the season, as we rapidly progress to match games with other Clubs. The kit is not only important during games, but it helps us track kids when they are not actually playing.

Please note, the shirt is bespoke made, which unfortunately means if a size is out of stock, it can take 12 weeks for it to become available again. The Club works with Provan to try to establish a buffer stock to avoid this problem, but the message is –order early to avoid disappointment.

Provan also supply a waterproof training top similar to those worn by the Club Coaches. Although a bit more expensive than some, a garment of this sort is very smart and useful as the weather deteriorates towards the turn of the year. Otherwise, a cagole or anorak or even a hoodie is a good idea.

Otherwise, children should wear a number of layers of clothing to keep warm – multiple T-shirts are good if the budget does not stretch to specialist undergarments which can also be obtained from Provan.

Please put a name on all garments.

Boots

For Mini rugby, most off the shelf football type boots are acceptable, although strictly speaking, the football studs should be replaced by the aluminium rugby type. If you can, this is better and safer, and probably gives a better grip. Blades are not recommended.

The Club has a stock of old boots which are in reasonable nick so if you need something in an emergency or at short notice, let us know and we can see what we can do. If you have a good used pair that are no longer needed, we will be happy to take them off your hands.

Gumshields

Although thankfully, injury and damage is relatively uncommon, the Club would advise the wearing of a gumshield. Clearly, dentally fitted shields tend to be better andperhaps more comfortable, but most players are happy to use a standard one which you mould to the mouth after immersion in hot water. These are obtainable from most sports shops – it may be necessary to shorten the mould by cutting it for the mouths of younger/smaller children.

Headguards

There is no conclusive evidence that wearing a headguard provides material protection from a potentially concussive head knock, so whether your child wears one is really a matter of personal preference. In some cases, they do instill confidence in the wearer.Guards can be obtained from Provan or from most good sports outlets.
