Strategic Thrust 1: Achieving Academic Excellence 1.1 LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM @ HS
In HS, we believe in creating experiences beyond the classroom that will greatly enhance the learning of our students. Besides helping our students see the relevance of what they have learnt during normal lessons, these activities also aim to cultivate their interest in learning the various disciplines and developing in them thinking skills and a good learning attitude. During the first half of 2016, the following enrichment programmes were organised for Hougeans.
Secondary 1 Maths Trail @ Changi Airport
(26th May – For Sec 1 Normal , 27th May – For Sec 1 Express)
Secondary One students complete challenges in teams at Changi Airport to discover that they
can apply Mathematics everywhere to solve daily problems.
Vision: Grateful Children, Respectful Pupils, Compassionate Citizens.
Mission: Care. Lead. Inspire. Partner. (CLIP) Values: Gratitude, Respect, Compassion.

Humanities Learning Journeys
Secondary 4 Tour and Kite Flying @ Marina Barrage (April 2016)
In alignment with Earth
Week and the 1st Death
Anniversary of Mr Lee
Kuan Yew, the Secondary
4 Express students went
on a learning journey to
Marina Barrage. During the
guided tour, the students
learned to appreciate the
vision of the late Mr Lee
Kuan Yew and understood
the need to have a
government that is forward-
looking. The facility is also
a showcase for
Singapore’s push to be a
greener country. A short kite flying session at the green roof allowed the students to be grateful
for the clean and green environment in Singapore.
Humanities Learning Journeys Secondary 1 Geographical Investigation (Mar 2016)
This year, the Secondary 1
students carried out their
Geographical Investigation
(GI) at Punggol Waterway.
Armed with their clipboards
and hats, the students
worked diligently, making
keen observations about their
built and natural
environments and testing out
the water quality of our
treasured waterways.
Through experiential learning,
students were able to make
connections between what
they have learned in the
classrooms and the
environment that they live in, making the learning of geography more engaging and rewarding to
them.

Secondary One Food Art Competition (April 2016)
A Food Art competition was designed by our Food
and Consumer Education Unit for the Secondary 1
students in April. In pairs, the students were
tasked to use ‘My Healthy Plate’ as a nutritional
tool to create healthy and attractive plates of food
art. Whole-meal and wholegrain products were
strongly encouraged due to their significant health
benefits. During the planning stage, students took
initiative to research online for inspiration, and many
students were eager to consult teachers for
feedback on their designs. Students displayed
attributes of good team players during the
competition and enjoyed themselves.
Secondary 2 Historical Investigation (Feb 2016)
This year, the Secondary 2 students
visited the National Museum of Singapore
as part of their Historical Investigation (HI)
project. The students visited the newly-
refurbished galleries that depict a social
history of Singapore from the 1900s to the
1980s. Through these interactive insights
into the daily lives of people in the past, the
students learnt to further draw connections
between the past and the present, forming a
deeper understanding of how life has changed and
how it has remained the same. At the same time,
the out-of-classroom experience helped to widen
students’ perceptions of life in Singapore in the past, hence making the learning of history a
much more fruitful and rewarding experience.

1.2 Achievements in External Competitions
HS also believes in challenging and stretching our students to excel in their strengths. Each
department has its own stretch programme to identify talents in their disciplines and to train
them to represent the school in various inter-school competitions. The following Hougeans
have risen to the occasion and won accolades for the school during the first half of this year.

The 8th National Chinese News Clip Competition 2016
Our Hougeans did the school proud and won the Silver award in the 8th National Chinese
News Clip Competition 2016. Chen Qing Xiang (3E1), Lim Jia Xuan (3E1), Chester See
(3E4) and Lim Si Ying (3E4) had spent weeks on their preparation. From brainstorming for
the topic to be reported, to writing their own
scripts, the experience has taught them skills
beyond the classroom. The students
leveraged on the school’s community
shopping event, One Dream - HOME, a
collaboration between various stakeholders
such as Nanyang Polytechnic volunteers, our
PSG members, our Alumni members and our
own Hougeans. They did news features on
the spirit of volunteerism and interviewed the
different stakeholders on the day of the event.
The students took many pictures and video
clips before sieving out the best takes and
editing them themselves. They spent hours
and even nights in school just to make sure
that they presented the best that they could,
refining their end product up till the very hour
of submission. The 3-minute news clip was finally produced and submitted to the
organization.
An invitation to attend the award
ceremony came from the organizer and
we went to the ceremony without
knowing the outcome. Out of more than
30 schools, Hougang Secondary School
emerged as the runner up, clinching the
Silver Award. The hard work of the
students definitely paid off.
Chen Qing Xiang commented that by
taking part in the competition, she had
learnt that no success can be celebrated
without any effort. She discovered the
true meaning of being a team player and an active contributor by overcoming difficulties
encountered during the process. Lim Jia Xuan also learnt that the production of news
broadcasted on TV and published in newspapers, which she had taken for granted, was truly
“not easy”.

Strategic Thrust 2: Cultivating Character Excellence
2.1 Hougang Secondary School’s GRC Banquet
Hougang Secondary School’s GRC Banquet is an annual celebration (started since 2010)
which brings together the whole Hougang Secondary family: students, parents, staff, SAC,
alumni and our special elderly guests from various 2:168 service points* to recognise
students for their contributions in living out the school's core values GRC (Gratitude,
Respect and Compassion). Over the years, such affirmation of Values-in-Action efforts has
encouraged a vibrant pool of community youth leaders among students and alumni.
*2:168 service points refers to the regular weekly service that the school is committed to
serving for 2 hours out of 168 hours in a week (24 hours x 7 days = 168 hours a week)
This year, the school launched ‘GRC through 3G Volunteerism’ at the Banquet. We are
indeed honoured that Mr Ng Chee Meng, Acting Minister for Education (Schools) and Senior
Minister of State for Transport,
graced the event as our Guest of
Honour.

In his speech at the event, Ag Minister Ng endorsed the strong emphasis that the school
gives to developing well-rounded individuals and lifelong learners. This focus is made
possible through the school’s Learning for Life Programme, ‘GRC in Action, A Hougean Way
of Life’, which provides real life platforms for students to strengthen values and build
attributes like gratitude, respect and compassion, which are the school’s core values.
Ag Minister Ng applauded the school’s 3G Volunteerism initiative which he said provided
platforms for three groups of people: Youths (that possess Energy), Educators (staff and
community partners) that have different Expertise and Seniors that continue to serve with
their rich Experience. He is excited about the potential of this initiative because it illustrates
how an active lifestyle of volunteerism not only develops one’s character and leadership in
real-life values education, but also contributes to meeting the real needs of the community.
What the school is doing through this inter-generational model could well be something that
other schools and organizations can try to adopt. There is a great deal we can learn from the
school’s approach in enhancing MOE’s efforts in Character Citizenship Education and
Values in Action.

Ag Minister Ng reiterated that he fully supports the school’s Vision 2020, ‘HS - The
Community School’, because this noble cause of creating and enabling communities is very
much in line with what Singapore as a nation is doing – everyone of us chips in to play our
part towards SG100. When such an inter-generational team of Youths, Educators and
Seniors come together as a YES team, we can be very confident that we can create and
navigate our future together, a future which is full of possibilities.
In closing, Ag Minister wish all at Hougang Secondary: students, alumni, teachers and
partners, a meaningful and fulfilling journey as we Say “YES” to 3G Volunteerism!

2.2 GRC Beyond Borders: 24 May to 27 May 2016
Malacca (3A1 & 3E2)
3A1 at a village primary school
“OSL has shown me how to appreciate my
family and how fortunate I am, being able to
live with my parents who provide everything I
need. When I was interacting with one of the
kids in the village primary school, I learned
that he was living with his two brothers near
the school, without their parents. Reflecting
on my own life, I am thankful for my parents
who wash my clothes for me, cook delicious
meals and even wake me up for school –
things that the little boy younger than me had
to do all by himself. OSL has also taught me
how challenging it is being a teacher. During
the days of preparing for OSL, I felt the sheer
amount of work that went into preparing for
each lesson. Thus, I appreciate my teachers
for their tireless daily efforts in teaching us.” –Cherina, 3A1
3E2 at a village primary school
“It was a fruitful trip to Malacca for
3E2. We visited many interesting
places like Jonker Street, The
Stadthuys and the Baba Nyonya
Heritage Museum. We also did 2-
day service at a village primary
school - SJK(C) Machap Baru. The
sight of the classroom conditions of
the students at the school and
orphanage developed a sense of
appreciation in us as we always
took the little things in our
classrooms, like the projector, for
granted. Despite this, the students
were carefree and happier than us,
greeting us with their beautiful smiles daily. The whole journey has developed us to be even
greater GRC STARs through the experience of working hard together as a class to plan
lessons and games for the students. Because of the effort of the class and teachers, we
have also bonded more as a class, making this trip one that is filled with precious memories
and knowledge.” –Zabelle 3E2

Johor Bahru (3E3 and 3T1)
3E3 at an orphanage
3E3 students, their Character Coaches and Mr Foo Yong Howe embarked on their Overseas
Service Learning trip from May 24 to May 27. The students interacted with the children and
youths at Care Haven, an orphanage, in Johor Bahru. It was a memorable and meaningful
experience for everyone.
Although the children mainly spoke Mandarin, 3E3 students smiled and stepped out of their
comfort zones to reach out to them. They played games, conducted various art and craft
activities such as paper plate masks, origami, shared about GRC STAR and taught Basic
English. Furthermore, some helped in the preparation of the meals. During the farewell,
students did their best and performed a magic show, Indian Dance, played the piano, sang
songs and danced. It was heart-warming when 3E3 students gave their encouragement
cards to the children from Care Haven, and they all parted with hugs.
3E3 learned various important and valuable lessons from the children, specifically, being
grateful, contented, responsible and resilient, values which they would continue to apply in
their daily lives in Singapore.

Farewell at Care Haven
3T1 at an orphanage
“My class went to Johor Bahru for our OSL trip. We visited Villa Paulos, a home which cares
for 23 children aged 7 to 16 years old, who have been abandoned, neglected or abused.
The children stay in a donated bungalow and attend regular school in the morning.
The OSL trip has taught me many valuable lessons. I have learnt that we should be more
grateful for what we have and not to take things for granted or complain about every little
inconvenience. Even though gratitude is one our school values, we do not always show this
value through our actions. When I interacted and played games with the children at Villa
Paulos, I realized that they are happy children who hardly complain. To most of us, some of
the games we played were common ones that we have played before and were not that
interesting, but to the children, these games were new to them and they truly enjoyed the
sessions.
One moment that truly impacted me was on the second day, when I conducted an art lesson.
My group taught them how to design bookmarks. I told them to write a short message for us
or anyone they wanted to write to. As we were packing our things to head back to the bus to
go for our lunch, my classmate, Hock Sim, showed me a bookmark written in Chinese. He
told me it is written by a girl named Sylvia to her mother. He translated the message in
English for me. Sylvia wrote about how much she really missed her mom and that she felt
lonely without her. Her message broke my heart as it brought me back to the time I had an
argument with my parents. Even though there will be moments when we complain about our
parents’ nagging, we have to be thankful that they are there to help us through our lives’
journeys and overcome challenging obstacles.
On the last day, we gave farewell gifts to the children and also prepared a birthday cake to
celebrate their birthdays. The caretaker told them to close their eyes and make a wish that
we will come back again after the holidays. That was when I burst into tears because we
knew that we could not possibly make that wish come true. As we bid our last farewell, one
girl asked me, "Will you come back again?" I could not respond but I told her that we would if
we have the chance. I truly hope that it would come true.” – Shazney, 3T1

Batam (3E4, 3A2, 3E1)
3E4 at a village primary school
25 students from 3E4 with 3 accompanying teachers provided service to SDS Veritas School,
a school in a slum area which is attended by 60 to 80 children living in the neighbourhood.
With only 1 staff room and 2 classrooms, the school building could hardly accommodate all
its students. Hence, the principal and her staff are in the process of adding a third and a
fourth classroom to the building. With each visit from a visiting school on OSL, the school
could complete more of its
improvement works. Hence
there was plenty to do in this
school. Students from 3E4
were divided into groups to
paint the staffroom and the
exterior walls of the school
building, and to help out with
the laying of bricks for a wall in
the third classroom. While
construction and painting were
going on, another two groups
conducted conversational
English and art and craft
lessons with the students in the
school.
3E4 truly rose to the occasion. They persevered through the tough conditions, bolstered by
teamwork, and completed the various jobs assigned to them. At the end of the three days of
service, a fresh coat of paint was added to the staff room and to the front exterior wall of the
school building, a mural with HS values of GRC was painted on one of the walls, the third
classroom was near completion, and many friendships and memories with the local children
were made. Most of all, 3E4 students learnt more about themselves, their strengths and
weaknesses and how they could shine as GRC STARs.

3A2 at an orphanage
“Throughout the entire 4D3N OSL trip, all of us were able to exhibit our school values
gratitude, respect and compassion. We have all learnt and gained many experiences while
serving at the Al-Aqsho orphanage. We experienced mixed emotions as we realised how
fortunate we were and how conducive our learning environment was back home. We learnt
to be more appreciative after realizing how they did not have facilities such as sinks to wash
the dishes, drying racks for their damp clothes, or tables and chairs to be comfortable while
studying. Despite not having the facilities to have their basic needs met, they did not
complain and were always joyful. The smiles on their faces relieved our lethargy and livened
up the atmosphere. The results were satisfying, after all the hard work from our classmates
since the planning and preparation stage. The children’s appreciation of our efforts
encouraged us to give our best effort every day of the trip. This trip has strengthened the
bonds in our class and this fruitful memory will always be etched in our hearts. We would like
to specially thank the teachers who have also made this entire trip possible. Without the
efforts and hard work of the teachers, none of us would have such an enriching experience.”

3E1 at an orphanage
For this year's OSL trip, 3E1 travelled to Batam to provide their services to the children living
in Panti Asuhan Altaqwa orphanage,.
On the first day, the class went to the project site to understand the living conditions of the
children in the orphanage and better determine their needs. After they had spent time
interacting with the people living in the orphanage, the class was able to better pinpoint
some ways that they could improve the lives of those in the orphanage. Some examples
included teaching the children practices of personal hygiene by learning to wash their hands
properly, and basic English through creating simple pieces of art which the children could
keep. The class also decided on giving the two floors of the orphanage a fresh coat of paint,
cleaning and tidying it up in the process. By the end of their project, 3E1 could certainly say
they have made a significant difference at the orphanage.
2 Hougang Street 93 Singapore 534256 Tel: 63851990 Email: :[email protected]
On the final day, the students continued to carry out their duty in gusto, and were able to
complete what was required of them in time. The end product of the students' work was
evident, as the orphanage was now in pristine condition, and the children’s joy in learning
from our students was unforgettable. On the trip back to the hotel, everyone concurred that
the OSL trip was worthwhile, and a majority proclaimed that they would serve the orphanage
once more if given the chance.
2.3 Local Service Learning 2016
While their peers were involved in Overseas Service Learning, a group of 30 Secondary
Three students put their commitment to community service into action by serving the school
and community. The raison d'etre of this 4 day local service programme was to foster social
cohesion and civic responsibility among our students, as well as imbues them with
the school's core values of gratitude, respect and compassion.
Students lent a helping hand to the school landscapers and I.T. support staff in maintaining
the cleanliness and aesthetics of the school premises. The subsequent three days saw
students partaking in meaningful interactions with residents from the Institute of Mental
Health, the Singapore Cheshire Home and the Golden Care Group for the elderly.
“From helping beneficiaries deal with their depression to interacting with elderly women and
men with dementia, the Secondary 3 students have strove to live out the GRC STAR values
and have shown that we are never too young to serve the community and everyone around
us.” – Joanna Lim, 3E3

2.6 Secondary Two Adventure Camp (24th – 26th May 2016)
The PE Department organized a 3-day-2-night adventure camp for all Secondary 2 students
during the Post-Exam period. The camp was a platform for students to realize their full
potential through a variety of unique outdoor experiences that bring about Grateful children,
Respectful students and Compassionate citizens (School core Values – GRC) and develop
themselves into a Self-directed learner, Team player, Active contributor and Role model
(STAR). In addition, the camp facilitated the building of stronger rapport between students
and teachers.
During the camp, students stretched their limits at the Forest Adventure while completing the
High Elements activities, applied their knowledge on map-reading (learned from Outdoor
Education lessons in school) during the Orienteering activity, constructed and tested an
improvised raft at East Coast beach, drew strengths from peers in the teambuilding activities
and prepared their dinner from raw ingredients provided to them during the Outdoor Cooking
activity. On the final day, students embarked on the Junkart Challenge where they
transformed junks into movable carts. The camp wrapped-up with a fun-filled race among all
the junkarts where the Character Coaches were the passengers of the carts!

2.10 Drama Production 2016 (15-16 April)
Drama Production 2016: The Price of Love/Trapped
On 15 and 16 April 2016, the HS Drama Club put up a double bill performance with 2 plays
titled ‘The Price of Love’ and ‘Trapped’. After 2 consecutive Distinction awards at the
Singapore Youth Festival, this marks another milestone for the club. From sourcing of props
and costumes, to designing of backdrops, everything was done from scratch in order to
produce something that was truly distinctive of the HS Drama Club. Even stage
management, projection, lighting and sound were taken charge of by students, guided by a
dedicated team of instructors from How Drama Education. Along with stellar acting from a
passionate cast, the Drama Club
received much acclaim from the
audience. In this ambitious
project, the club also received
full support from the school’s
staff and students. It was truly a
rare and exciting opportunity for
each member to learn and grow
as practicing artists in a
professional theatre setting.

‘Trapped’ 3 lifts. 3 locations. 3 groups of people with diverse personalities trapped inside. Each has a
story to tell, and despite their differences, something connects them. As they reflect on their
lives outside the elevators, we
are taken through powerful
scenes that reflect each
character’s inner struggles as
they try to reconcile the
expectations of their loved
ones and their own desires.
This play forced the Drama
Club members to deeply
examine the psyche of the
characters and the end
product was a moving and
emotional piece that allowed
each actor to shine in its own
right. Even as the play closes,
it certainly leaves some
lingering thoughts.
