Strap Yourself In For a Bit of Gospel Surfing At the beginning of Advent, we entered into the 3 rd Year of the Sunday Liturgical Readings. Year C, as it is called, takes us through the Gospel of Luke and gives us continuous readings week by week from the Gospel of St. Luke, particularly through the Sundays of Ordinary Time. You will probably recognize them when the time comes, as most of our favourite parables (e.g. The Good Samaritan, The Prodigal Son, Dives and Lazarus, The Pharisee and the Publican) come from his Gospel, and his Gospel alone! But we don’t start those readings until the 3 rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, which this year occurs on January 27th. In the meantime, we are treated to a bit of a mishmash of stories taken from a variety of Gospels which finish off the Christmas story and tell of the days that led Jesus into his ministry. Interestingly, most of these stories are unique to the particular Gospel in which they are found and do not have parallels in the other Gospels. On our first weekend, weekend of 29/30 December, we are given the story of Jesus as a twelve year old who gives his parents the flick when they visit the big smoke (Jerusalem Temple), causing no end of panic among the ranks. The Feast is the Feast of the Holy Family and probably is a salutary lesson for any parent who naively wishes their child was just like Jesus! Quite appropriately for Year C, the story is found in Luke’s Gospel. But then again, it is found only in Luke’s Gospel. The weekend after (5/6 January) is the Feast of the Epiphany and we are taken to Matthew’s Gospel for the story of the Wise Men (or women!) who come looking for the child Jesus. We have to go to Matthew’s Gospel each and every year for this story, because it is only found in Matthew’s Gospel. Despite what you might see in Christmas creches, they don’t go to the crib in a stable (only Luke has Jesus born in a stable!). They come knocking on the door of the house, and it could be up to two years later as Herod orders the killing of every male child up to the age of two (as was the case with Moses)! The lapse of time wouldn’t be surprising as it was a long way from the East and there weren’t a lot of flights in those days (apart from Flights into Egypt!). The 12/13 January is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The Baptism of Jesus is reported in all the Gospel (except John’s) and, true to Year C, this year we hear Luke’s account. One of the distinguishing notes in Luke’s account is that Jesus does not have his vision and hear God’s voice while he is being baptized, but afterwards, while he is praying. This is a typical theme in Luke’s Gospel as Jesus is found in prayer before all the major decisions in his life. Our penultimate weekend (19/20 January) takes us to John’s Gospel and his unique story of the Wedding Feast of Cana. This is often referred to as the first miracle of Jesus’ ministry, although he does claim that it is a bit premature (“my hour has not yet come”). But going on the quantity of wine (6 water jars, each holding 20 or 30 gallons), he sounds like a great bloke to invite to your wedding! So enjoy your tour through the variety of Gospels and their stories during January, before we begin our journey through Luke’s Gospel starting on the last weekend in January. Strap Yourself In For a Bit of Gospel Surfing

At the beginning of Advent, we entered into the 3rd Year of the Sunday Liturgical Readings. Year C, as it is called, takes us through the Gospel of Luke and gives us continuous readings week by week from the Gospel of St. Luke, particularly through the Sundays of Ordinary Time. You will probably recognize them when the time comes, as most of our favourite parables (e.g. The Good Samaritan, The Prodigal Son, Dives

and Lazarus, The Pharisee and the Publican) come from his Gospel, and his Gospel alone!

But we don’t start those readings until the 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, which this year occurs on January 27th.
