History:St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He wasborn in Wales around 385 AD. His real name wasMaewyn Succat. When he was 16 years old he

was captured by pirates . They took him to a prison. One night he heard a voice. This Voice was a God’s, telling him to escape the prison.

Several years later he saw another vision that told him that he had to return to Ireland to convert Irish people to Christianity.

He used the shamrock, a three-leaf clover, to explain the

Christian concept of God . One legend explains that St. Patrick drove all the

snakes from Ireland but this is not true because Ireland never had snakes.

Nowadays:

• Now we celebrate St. Patrick’s day on 17 March because he died on this day. A lot of cities in Ireland and in the US have St. Patrick’s day parades. Many people wear green on this day.
