hen farmer Jim Hulshof isn’t checking two weather apps on his phone, he is gazing up at the sky wondering when rain will come.
The Stouffville farmer believes this in one of the three driest summers he’s seen since he first began helping farm the crops as a child 50 years ago.
“It’s a trying year more than anything else, just because of lack of water. Very horrible. Dry, dry, dry, dry,” he said, adding there has probably been a quarter of the normal rainfall since early May.
Hulshof’s distress over the dry summer comes as David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada, says York Region and southern Ontario are experiencing a severe drought and as the Lake Simcoe Region Conser-vation Authority asks residents and businesses to scale back their water consumption.
Hulshof irrigates 40 acres of his 50-acre farm on Bloomington Road east of Hwy. 48. He grows vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cab-bage, sweet corn, pumpkins and squash and operates a retail market on-site.
Even so, all the crops are suffering from heat stress.
For those farmers who don’t use irrigation systems, Hulshof believes they will be looking at a fraction of the yield they normally get unless the drought ends soon.
“For individuals who don’t have irrigation,

Who gets to wear the mayor’s chain of office?
Whitchurch-Stouffville resident Joanne George and her blind therapy dog, Smiley, were given The Sun-Tribune’s Citizen of the Year award during opening ceremonies of the Strawberry Festival on Canada Day.
The next day, Mayor Justin Altmann invited Smiley to greet festival goers in his community foundation booth on Main Street. That included placing the chain of office around the neck of the golden retriever.
Smiley’s signature smile only grew wider as crowds received him with roaring applause, George said. She said she was overwhelmed by the support from the town, but was soon disappointed in what she believed to be disapproval from her own councillor.
In an email to Altmann and other councillors obtained by The Sun-Tribune, Councillor Maurice Smith expressed his concern with the use of the chain.
“Sorry fellow councillors, I don’t find this funny at all,” Smith wrote in the email. “I think this is very disrespectful of the office.”
The Sun-Tribune asked Smith to clarify his comments. The councillor stressed that his concern had nothing to do with Smiley or George, but “pertained solely to the use of the town’s chain of office,” he wrote in an email.
“I believe the chain of office is an impor-tant symbol for the office of the mayor,” Smith said in an interview. “It should be used only by the mayor, and only at very
important town functions.”“I have never met that great animal
Smiley nor his owner, Joanne George,” the councillor for the Ballantrae-Mussleman’s Lake area said.
‘Sorry fellow councillors, I
don’t find this funny at all. I
think this is very disrespectful
of the office.’
But George said she was disappoint-ed when she read the email, which was forwarded to her. The lake-area resident posted a comment on Facebook asking her friends and followers if they thought Smiley wearing the mayor’s chain of office was disrespectful.
“It upset me, obviously,” she said. “It really took away from the award I was given, to hear that from my councillor.”
George’s post spread like wildfire as 560 people shared it and 121 commented. Almost all the comments were in support of Smiley.
With the affirmation she’s received, George now says she doesn’t care about Smith’s comments.
“Considering the mayor allowed it,” she said in an interview Wednesday. “I felt it’s he who makes those decisions.”
Altmann told The Sun-Tribune in an email he made the decision in accordance with “2016 Ontario Municipal Legisla-tion”.
Though the section quoted does not
explicitly outline the proper use of the chain of office, Altmann believes it’s justi-fied, to “promote public involvement”, “act as a representative”, and “participate in and foster activities that enhance the well-being of the municipality”.
“Smiley and Joanne George were rec-ognized not only as citizens of the year but as national icons,” he wrote in an email. “Promoting better living in our communi-ties through the ability to educate to all ages that disabilities can be overcome.”
Smiley’s social media pages have thou-sands of followers. George receives mail and emails from his fans from all across the world. The golden retriever has been to Queen’s Park to meet with former Lieuten-ant Governor of Ontario David Onley, he was invited to a reception on Parliament Hill where he spent an afternoon with the Governor General of Canada David John-ston and met Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
In addition, the Royal Canadian Mount-ed Police have given Smiley formal recog-nition as an honorary police service dog.
Others have been given the chain to wear by Altmann, including Sun-Tribune columnist Jim Thomas, during a night in his honour at Parkview Village in February, and Elijah Gardner, a St. Brendan School student who spoke at the inaugural meet-ing of the current council in November 2014 with the neckpiece on.
It’s not the first time this year that Alt-mann and Smith clashed on an issue. Earlier in May, Smith called Altmann a “smart-ass” during a meeting after Alt-mann told him he could not speak on a matter because he did not respond quick-ly enough.

The mayor’s getting hitched – and you’re invited.
Mayor Justin Altmann and Jenny Hillier are set to marry on Aug. 6 at 12:30 p.m. in Civic Square in front the Lebovic Centre for Arts & Entertainment, 19 on the Park in downtown Stouffville.
The couple will say their vows on the balcony in front of several VIPs, mayors from other towns, key representatives of York Region and other dignitaries from Stouffville.
But the whole town’s also invited as Altmann encourages all Stouffville resi-
dents and friends to attend his marriage ceremony.
Residents can watch the ceremony and extend their well-wishes in a receiving line following the ceremony.
They may need crowd control. An update on the event carried on The Sun-Tribune’s website was one of yorkregion.com’s most-read stories during the past week.
The Toronto media also picked up the story after a news release was issued.
Altmann and Hillier met in Novem-ber and were engaged three months later when the mayor proposed at 19 on the Park in front of family and friends, using “a break-in at the theatre” excuse to get
Hillier there. Altmann got down on one knee and
asked Hillier for her hand in marriage as her favourite song, Etta James’ At Last played.
“When we first met, everything was different,” Altmann told The Sun-Tribune in March.
Altmann was elected mayor in 2014. Hillier works in senior management with the Bank of Montreal in Toronto.
The couple has purchased a home in Stouffville in the downtown and are begin-ning renovations before they move in.
Residents who plan to attend can RSVP by email at [email protected]

ure signs you grew up in Stouffville: Back before the entrance signs – depending on where you enter – read
40,000 and something. When the village looked
liked Mayberry and your life was straight out of Happy Days, Family Ties or Leave it to Beaver.
A lot more people went to church in this then WASP enclave – far from today’s Stouffville, which is so much more representative of Cana-dian reality.
Stouffville and Whitchurch were separate entities back then.
You couldn’t get away with anything. Everyone knew you – and your parents were a four-digit phone call and a couple of blocks away.
You refer to the Stouffville Country Market as the sales barn(s) or flea market. Both references date you.
You square-danced your way through high school.
You learned to swim in an outdoor pool – during its three-month season.
You were a Clipper. You may have worn Cooperalls and a mouthguard.
You remember The Lion pub when it was a car dealer-ship, before it was the Steer-burger restaurant.
You bought pizza, coffee, donuts and hamburgers from local joints; the big chains didn’t arrive until the 1980s.
The clerk at the Beer Store knew every underage kid in town. And he worked every shift.
Or back when the burgh was dry and folks drove to Markham for their beer and spirits.
You tell your kids about the good old days sliding down the toboggan hill in Memorial Park.
You remember when there were banks, hardware stores and a supermarket in down-town Stouffville.
The GO train didn’t come
this far north. Same for the 404.
Canadian Tire was your general store. The Main Street site is now home to a vacant lot.
You went to high school on Edward Street not Hoover Park Drive.
Max Webster played your high school dance.
And future NHLer Keith Acton or TSN Radio’s Mike (Rehill) Richards was in your class.
You know where Orchard Park Public school was located.
You remember when Stouffville had a mall – the cur-rent LCBO plaza.
You may have been born in Stouffville’s own hospital – Brier Bush, which has been replaced by Spring Street, near Main and Stouffer.
Not that you attended, unless it was for a Boy Scout or Girl Guide badge, but town council meetings were held in what’s now the top floor of Nineteen on the Park.
The clock tower in Civic Square was home to a loud horn that blared during every fire department call, alerting all within earshot morning, noon and night.
Stouffville likely didn’t have a movie theatre when you were growing up.
Some things don’t change.

t’s a mission. But not impossible.
Ask Gene Paisley.For the 90-year-
old Stouffville resi-dent, the dream of building a hospital in the village of Carpenter, Ghana, on the west coast of Africa, could soon become a reality.
To date, more than $6 million has been raised or pledged towards erecting a facility costing an estimat-ed $10 million.
Adding an initiative to the challenge is the prom-ise by Vancouver humani-tarian James Pattison to match the project dollar for dollar with construction to begin once receipts reach the half-way mark.
Paisley recently returned from an eight-month Ghana visit where his son and daughter-in-law, David and Brenda Mensah serve as church directors and mis-sionaries. Health permit-ting, Gene plans to go back.
Without a hospital, ser-vices are provided in small clinics under shade trees or in school classrooms. Dr. Jennifer Wilson of Uxbridge has been a regular provid-er, travelling to Carpenter twice a year while husband Graham takes care of their five children.
Paisley is loud in praise of what Dr. Wilson has accom-plished along with other area professionals, includ-ing Stouffville optometrist Dr. Martin McDowell.
It was Dr. Wilson who, with Susan Fockler, also of Uxbridge, travelled to the United States and obtained life-saving pumps now used following child births. Previous to this, hundreds of babies were considered still-born, said Paisley “their bodies tossed away”.
He noted that, under proper surgical care, as many as 300 hernia opera-tions were performed dur-ing a period of 10 days.
Paisley describes as
“amazing” the number of professionals who willingly give of their time and tal-ents without charge, “even paying their ways there and back”, he said.
While seeking additional funds for the hospital, Pais-ley honestly admits people are continually “bombard-ed with charity requests from all directions”.
“It’s really wonderful what Canadians do,” he said.
As a second-time visitor, Paisley said he was won-derfully received.
“They made me feel like a king,” he said. “I’d never experienced such hospital-ity.”
Before leaving Canada, he made up his mind not to complain about the heat or the food.
“It doesn’t hurt a per-son to sweat a little,” he joked. “And I never missed a meal.”
It was March 9, 2014 that Gene’s wife Laura passed away. But residents of Car-penter did not forget. More than 1,500 attended a wor-ship service in her memory.
In a 2015 newsletter, Dr. Wilson wrote: “When we are faithful to do our part, others will rise up and do theirs. I could never have imagined the number of health professionals who were ready and waiting to be given an opportunity to help universally, looking
for a way to show mercy to their global neighbours through giving so gener-ously.”
Eugene ‘Kick’ Paisley is a Stouffville native, the son of T.H. and Lillis Pais-ley. In addition to daughter Brenda, Gene has two sons, Gary of Brechin and Grant in Vancouver, six grandchil-dren and six great-grand-children.
Because Summitview Public School and the Christian church were directly across the road, “mother could watch me go in and come out the doors of both,” he recalls. There were no opportunities for side trips.
Gene remembers receiv-ing the strap only once. Principal Cedric Watson administered the whacks, for what reason Gene didn’t reveal. “The soreness in my right hand only ended last week,” he said with a laugh.
The link between Gene and his son-in-law is a heart-warming story. It was Stouffville’s Vince Gallo who introduced the two. Gene invited David to serve as a hired hand on his Lincoln-ville farm.
A portion of his wages covered tuition fees to Ontario Bible College. Following graduation, David went on to obtain his master’s degree from Acadia University in Nova Scotia. Brenda was then a bank employee in nearby Kemptville.
“It was a union meant to be,” she agrees.
Several years ago, Gene and David travelled to Ghana together.
“The farm bought us our tickets,” Gene says. Since then, he’s continued to give that country assistance, both physically and finan-cially.

EvAN'S bEENAWAY. SOTHOMASHEREAGAIN...Glad Park teachers inspire philanthropy
With teachers and students on their summer vaca-tion, I am thankful for the facts and figures taught and learned this year, but most impressed by the generosity, mindfulness and philanthropy inspired by staff at Glad Park Public School.
This spring, Ms Morrow, Mlle. Alexan and Mlle. Gig-nac spearheaded the Glad Park Warrior Walk in support of Camp Oochigeas, a camp for children with cancer.
These amazing teachers, with the support of Ms Anderson and Ms Weafer, organized events during the month of May culminating in the Warrior Walk.
More than $5,000 was raised for Camp Ooch, sur-passing their goal of $3,500. Thank you for all the extra time and energy you give and for teaching our children how to be engaged, passionate and generous members of society.

No villains in tale of theatre company leaving Stouffville arts centre
Re: ‘Arts centre lost money on productions’ by David Parmer and ‘What really forced theatre company to move’ by Salvatore Amenta, letters to the editor, July 7.
First, let me start with my compliments to Mr. Par-mer for a well-written and informative letter about the experience of Nineteen on the Park with the Stouffville Theatre Company.
“The truth of the story lies in the details.” – Paul Auster, The Brooklyn Follies And let me say I see no villains in this, I doubt anyone
is happy that the local theatre company could not afford the rent. I understand the theatre company has found another venue to continue their striving for theatre – good for them – best wishes.
The second letter by Mr. Amenta I appreciate also in a different way.
Sir, you said many true things about art not always being appreciated for itself and being used for political, religious, or other purposes.
But even art, like all things, must be examined and accountable for what it takes and what it gives.
For, indeed art does take and it does give. But I do object to you calling us all “post-romantic,
phillistine North America.”Please, do not misunderstand, I do not mind being
called a Phillistine; but I am not post-romantic.Come Sancho, onward Rocinante, we have windmills
to fight.Too much sanity may be madness — and maddest of
all: to see life as it is, and not as it should be!And now the drama of life continues for us all until
our curtain closes – be we ready or not.

York Regional Police are looking for two male suspects following a break-and-enter at a Stouffville con-venience store.
Police responded to a call at approximately 4:40 a.m on Friday at Stouffville Variety at Main Street and Tenth Line.
On arrival, officers saw a single front door that was smashed. Some items, including a cash box, were stolen from inside the store.
Police are looking for “two male parties” and have no further descrip-tion, said Sgt. Kelly Bachoo.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact York police’s No. 5 District at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7500, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, by leaving an anon-ymous tip online at 1800222tips.com, or by texting the tip to CRIMES (274637) starting with the word YORK.
Strawberry Festival vandals frustrate park neighbour
The Strawberry Festival brought the town together and hosted thou-sands of guests, but one resident says it also brought increased vandalism.
Peter Mitchell woke up the morn-ing of Sunday, July 3, to find a town pylon placed on his wife’s new car, an egg thrown into his living room through an open window and anoth-er pylon on top of a neighbour’s car.The pylons left scratches on the cars.
“A York Regional Police officer told my wife they’d been overrun with vandalism calls this weekend from Stouffville,” Mitchell said. “We filed a report, but they never bothered responding.”
Mitchell’s Booth Drive home is near Stouffville Memorial Park where most festival events took place.
“We got a change in the people who run the Strawberry Festival,” he said. “It seems to me these people need to make a plea next year to council or the police to say there should be highly-increased police patrol in these neighbourhoods at the time the festival is ending.”
Mitchell has been a Stouffville resident for 40 years. He’s seen the festival from its beginnings and says “it’s definitely getting worse in terms of rowdiness and vandalism”.
Town employees removed the pylons the same morning.
“It’s unfortunate when vandalism happens in our community – before, during or after The Strawberry Fes-tival,” said festival co-chair Nancy Matheson.“Festival security is to deal with incidents that arise during the day and evening, and protects festival grounds overnight. Our paid security does not patrol residential areas. As at any other time of the year, any vandalism to property should be reported to the police.”

Immunizations up from 34 to 99%
BY LISA [email protected]
wo thirds of 17-year-old York Region students were at risk of being suspended for failing to be properly immunized, but have finished off the
school year with the proper shots, medi-cal officer of health Dr. Karim Kurji says.
Watch out, seven-year-olds, you’re next.
When the region checked in January, 8,900 of more than 13,000 17-year-old students in the region were either missing immunizations or had out-of-date records, putting them at risk of being suspended from school.
That works out to a 34-per-cent com-pliance rate.
Worried the students would head off to post-secondary school and the workforce without the proper immu-nizations, the region sent out reminder letters and held 54 extra immunization clinics on evenings and weekends.
By the end of the school year, more than 99 per cent of the students had complied with Ontario legislation requiring parents to provide proof of their children’s immunization status against nine vaccine-preventable dis-eases unless they are exempted for med-ical, religious or conscience reasons.
The province requires school-aged children to be vaccinated against diph-theria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), varicella (chickenpox), polio,
measles, mumps, rubella and meningo-coccal meningitis.
“We need to think about vaccinations as a health investment for the present and the future,” Kurji said in a statement.
“Immunization is the most effective way to protect individuals and the community from vaccine-prevent-able diseases like measles, mumps and meningococcal men-ingitis — now and for
years to come.” This fall, public health’s focus will
shift to seven-year-old students to ensure they have the proper shots.
In May, the province introduced legislation that would require parents seeking non-medical immunization exemptions to take a lesson on the benefits of vaccinations through public health.
The new law would also require health-care providers to tell public health units which shots have been given to children, which would help reduce the number of students being suspended from school for out-of-date immunization records.
York parents can report immuniza-tion information online at eimmuniza-tion.york.ca, by faxing documents to 1-866-258-2026 or by calling York Region public health at 1-877-464-9675, ext. 73456.

$3.6M for Southlake radiation treatment unit
The province is helping Southlake pay for a radiation treatment unit that has been in operation since winter.
Health Minister Eric Hoskins announced $3.6 million in funding for the Southlake Regional Health Centre’s Stronach Regional Cancer Centre, money that will help cover the cost of the $4.2 million radiation unit that opened in February. It became the fourth treatment unit for the hospital and more than 400 additional cancer patients will be able to utilize the technology each year.
“They can be more accurate, do it faster and more safely,” he said. “They can make it as comfortable as pos-sible. It’s really fantastic. This is the fourth such machine and we might not be finished yet. We have no doubt that, as the population continues to grow, we need to make sure we’re able to provide this high quality service as close to home as possible. This is an important investment.”

ON NOW AT THE BRICK!
SAVING YOU MOREFor more details go instore or online @thebrick.com.
I’m going to call it half a year where they’re going to get half a crop, more than anything else. Anything that is a shallow-rooted crop, it’s a tough go. I know that for sure. I have about 10 acres of oats. It’s a half a crop. There’s hardly anything there. There’s just no moisture,” he said.
“I find it very difficult to establish any plants, if you’re trying to transplant, because there’s just no soil moisture to start off with. And if you’re seeding sweet corn and stuff like that, it’s very difficult for germination just because it’s not there, the moisture. So, that’s tough.”
Even when it has rained a handful of times since the beginning of May, it has often arrived as torrential showers, which has made it difficult for arid land to absorb the water, Hulshof said.
“You need a gentle rain at first just to soften it up just to absorb some of the water. That’s the problem now, when you do get rain now, it just runs off, it doesn’t help at all,” he said, adding the mild winter meant little snow melted into the ground.
Last Friday night’s storm created severe flooding in the Holland Marsh.
On the positive side, the lack of humidity this season has meant less disease and fewer insects attacking crops, Hulshof said.
Phil Smalley, who owns a 1,400-acre farm in Mount Albert that produces potatoes, soy-beans, corn and wheat, said the dry weather is hurting production.
“It’s definitely having an effect on the crops. We do have some irrigation, but we can’t water every acre that we crop, maybe 15 per cent of that,” he said.
“It (the drought) is definitely going to have a yield effect, sure. You don’t really know until you harvest it, eh? But the corn yield is going to be down, and the soybeans. The wheat is not going to be as big kernels as normal. And that and the potatoes, the yield on them is going to be definitely going to be down by, I would say, compared to a normal year, the yield is going to be down by at least 25 per cent.”
Some areas are hurting from the drought even more than Mount Albert, Smalley said.
Environment Canada’s Phillips agrees, although he said most areas of York Region and southern Ontario are suffering from the dry conditions to some degree.
“Dryness is everywhere in York Region, with degrees of dryness varying between south and north,” he said.
For example, Canada Day storms brought only 3.5 millimetres of rain in Buttonville, while the unofficial total in Aurora was 11.1 mm. Last Friday night, only 2.8 mm fell at But-tonville, while the unofficial amount in Aurora was 12.5 mm. Pointing out how difficult it is for the parched land to absorb a quick del-uge of rain, Phillips said all areas need some steady precipitation.
“What we need is a four-day rainfall with 15 to 20 mm each day. Not all in one hour because most of it will not go to work for you. (The rains) fill the sewers and cause intersec-tion flooding but they don’t really get down to the root zone, ” he said.
“We’re not quite to the dog days of sum-mer, but people are already abuzz with how dry it’s been and how warm.”
At Buttonville, where there is an Environ-
ment Canada weather station, about 90 mm of rain fell in May, June and up to July 11, less than half the 188 mm that would normally fall during that time, Phillips said.
“Each of those months, those periods, was less than normal so it’s been consistently dry and it’s been really dry particularly in the last three or four weeks. Most of that rain that occurred in June was really in the first 10 days,” he said.
“It’s really been scorching in the last four weeks. The farmers are really hurting.”
From June 12 to July 11, less than 10 mm of rain fell at Buttonville, where there would nor-mally be 75 to 80 mm. There have also been 12 days in the region so far since May where the temperature has climbed above 30C, com-pared to seven days in a typical late spring and early summer, Phillips said.
“While the averages have been above nor-mal, they haven’t really been record-breaking at all,” he said.
“That is, if you stuck a thermometer into York Region for May, June, July, it certainly wouldn’t be any memorable temperatures (because there hasn’t been much humidity this year). It’s been more like a desert heat than a tropical heat, although that’s going to change this week because we are going to get some Caribbean air coming up.”
Last year, by this same time, York Region had had one day above 30C and 244 mm of rain had fallen at Buttonville compared to this year’s 90 mm.
“It’s an enormous contrast. It’s almost as if last year was too wet and too cool and this year has been too hot and too dry for too long. Last year, there was too much weather and this year, there’s been not enough,” Phillips said.
“This has been great beer drinking weath-er, but it hasn’t been great for people depend-ing on moisture from a growing point of view. There’s fire bans out there and watering bans, too…It’s good for youthful people who like to drink beer, the muscle shirt and tank top crowd.”
There were calls for rains late this week, although Phillips remains skeptical they will do much good, if they come at all.
“It’s only 40 per cent (chance), it’s not a done deal. We’ve had a lot of these, 30, 40 per cents and it just didn’t happen. Maybe it happened in your front yard but not your backyard,” he said, adding the rest of July and August will likely be warmer than normal.
“These are not the rescue rains that grow-ers really need, although they won’t turn their back on it.”
Which leaves Hulshof continuing to watch the sky for rain.
“Sometime, even with the prediction of 100 per cent rain, it just blows away. That’s the sign of a dry year a lot of times when that hap-pens,” he said.
SUN-TRIBUNE FILE PHOTO
There was more rain in 2010, when Jim Hulshof (left), Michael Grifoni (right) and David Beloff harvested cauliflower on the Hulshof farm on Bloomington Road.
You’re being asked to reduce water use
The drought has prompted the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority to ask residents and busi-nesses to lower their water usage.“Low rainfall since mid-April has contributed to drought conditions, which can put stress on munici-pal water supplies,” Tom Hogenbirk, manager of engi-neering, said in a statement.“While we did see some rain in parts of the water-shed this past weekend, it wasn’t enough to counter the effects of the hot, dry weather over the last couple months. Until we see enough rain to bring us out of the early drought stage, we’re encouraging all water users to conserve, including businesses, aggre-
gate operations, golf courses, water bottlers, farms and residents,” he concluded.Current conditions in the watershed meet the Minis-try of Natural Resources’ first level of low water condi-tions, which is the first indication of a potential water supply problem, the conservation authority said.Residents and businesses are asked to conserve water by following municipal outdoor water use bylaws, which restrict watering to specific days and times.Check with your local municipality to get those days and times. You can also find information on the websites for the provincial ministries of natural resources, environment and agriculture. Visit ontario.ca for the ministry site in which you are interested.

With more than 12,000 people on York Region’s waiting list for subsidized housing, an additional $23 million in funding from the provincial and federal governments announced Wednesday is welcome news, but not enough to solve the region’s afford-able housing challenges, regional chair Wayne Emmerson said.
“Mr. Minister (new Housing Minister Chris Ballard), we’re going to be asking for
more,” he said at the announcement at Tom Taylor Place in Newmarket. “We’re shovel-ready and shovel-worthy to go forward.
“It’s a good start. We can’t do everything… We will do what we can with it.”
The region also wants to review its wait-ing list to determine the need of everyone on it, Emmerson said.
The region will now determine how best to use the additional funding, community
and health services commissioner Adelina Urbanski said.
Some money will go to upcoming sub-sidized housing projects in Vaughan and Markham. A 160-unit building will be con-structed on Woodbridge Avenue east of Kipling Avenue in Woodbridge, while a 250-unit building will be constructed on Hwy. 7, west of Main Street, in Unionville.
Regional staff will analyze where other funds will be allocated, Urbanski said.
“The new ones are ones we are just talking about now, but they haven’t gone to council for approval yet,” she said.
“We’re always in various stages of planning with projects, so when we say we are shovel-
ready and we have projects ready to go, it means we’re in various stages of planning. Some haven’t come forward yet, but we’re looking at where property is available, how big might (the buildings) be, where is the next municipality. OK, we’ve built in Newmarket, we’ve built in Richmond Hill, we’re building in Markham — where’s the next location? Because all nine municipalities want afford-able housing, so we have to make sure we provide for all our citizens.”
The region will look at the needs in munici-palities such as East Gwillimbury, Whitchurch-Stouffville and King, which have little or no subsidized housing projects, Urbanski said.

Yorkregion.com – the York Region Media Group’s website – recently received photos of a child holding the moon, someone holding the Big Nickel in Sudbury between their fingers and more apparently strange phenomena.
Of course, nothing strange really hap-pened, the images were just entries in our forced perspective photo contest.
Congratulations to Markham’s Amanda
Yim for winning the readers’ choice award with her photo of the Big Nickel, which she dubbed, ‘Nickel eh?’. Her entry received the most votes from readers.
Congratulations to Greensborough’s Hetal Damania for winning the photographers’ choice award with his photo of his son reach-ing for the moon.
Thanks to everyone who entered.

Al Jones poses with his 1954 Ford Monarch at the Stouffville legion car show last week.
Cool cars, hot food at legionBy Ali RAzA
Auto enthusiasts, rejoice! The Royal Cana-dian Legion brings Stouffville’s roadsters and motor heads together every Tuesday night.
Stouffville Branch 459 is hosting its weekly Cruise Nights, where members and people from the community showcase their cars, trucks and motorcycles.
The nights also offer a barbecue, live music from WhiStle Radio and 50/50 draws.
“We’re getting a lot of people coming by with their families,” said organizer and legion member Tom Wheeler. “They walk around, look at the cars, and grab a bite to eat.”
In its fifth year at the legion, Cruise Nights began this summer at the end of May and continue until the end of September. Every Tuesday, Wheeler says, around 40 to 50 clas-sic cars grace the branch parking lot.
The event begins at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and runs until dusk. WhiStle broadcasts live on-site.
Visitors can grab a snack or refreshment from the legion’s barbecue, while the kitch-
en offers chicken fingers, French fries and Kawartha Dairy ice cream.
Auto enthusiasts who bring their prized whips enter a draw for prizes on arrival.
The reception is growing, Wheeler says. It’s his fifth year organizing the event and he believes “it’s getting better and better”.
The vintage cars from the 1940s to the ‘70s manage to attract crowds.
“We’re starting to get a lot more people coming, just wanting to see,” Wheeler said.
The Legion Cruise Nights is a legacy of a car show that took place in the Canadian Tire/A&W parking lots. Wheeler was a par-ticipant in the show and decided to host it at the legion when the run at the SmartCentres plaza on Hoover Park Drive ended.
Though Wheeler showcases his own ’74 Corvette, the oldest car the event gets is from 1929. But there’s a wide range of vehi-cles to see.
The event is sponsored by Canadian Tire, 410 Auto, WhiStle Radio, Pure Autographics and the Stouffville legion.
The legion is at 150 Mostar St.
Peter von Richter drove his 1976 Cadillac Eldorado to the Stouffville Legion Cruise Night.

Summer is usually a time when hockey teams are in hibernation.
But don’t tell that to Kenny Burrows.Hockey has been foremost on the mind
of the Stouffville Spirit co-owner and general manager who is fine-tuning his roster before the club reports to their main training camp next month in preparation for the 2016-17 Ontario Junior Hockey League season.
A case in point took place Friday when Bur-rows pulled the trigger on two trades.
One of which saw the Spirit send team cap-tain and Stouffville resident Spencer Roberts, 19, to the Cobourg Cougars.
In exchange, the Spirit received forward and Stouffville resident Justin Bennett.
The 18-year-old Bennett began last season with the Pickering Panthers, where he had six goals and nine assists in 36 games before he was traded to Cobourg.
While with Cobourg, Bennett had five goals and two assists in 17 games.
He also collected one assist in four postsea-son matches while with Cobourg.
The nephew of former National Hockey League forward Gary Roberts, Roberts had 18 goals and 20 assists in 47 regular season games for the Spirit, who failed to make the playoffs.
In trading Roberts, Burrows pointed out Cobourg had inquired about his services since early last season before the two clubs worked out what they feel is an amicable transaction. Cobourg is hosting the national Jr. A champi-onships next spring.
“It’s a good situation for (Roberts). He’s going to an RBC Cup team and he has an aunt that lives in Cobourg so it will be good for him,” Burrows said.
As for acquiring Bennett, Burrows couldn’t be happier.
“He wanted to play in Stouffville, he’s loyal, he’s a tough kid and he can score a bit. We’re definitely happy to have Justin. We feel he can be as good as Spencer (Roberts),” he said.
This is Roberts’ final year of junior eligibil-ity. Bennett has three years remaining.
In another transaction, the Spirit dealt for-ward Christopher Brill-Morgan to the Oakville Blades for cash.
Playing the last three campaigns with the Spirit, Brill-Morgan, 20, was the club’s second-leading scorer last season with 21 goals and 34 assists in 52 regular season games.
In trading Brill-Morgan, Burrows said he requested a move to live out in that area because he intends to enrol at the University

of Guelph this fall.In receiving cash from the Blades, Burrows
revealed he intends to put it to good use by acquiring a player.
“I’ll be using the money to buy a defence-man shortly,” he said.
He did say the trades may just be the tip of the iceberg as to the moves he intends to make — all with the objective to get the Spirit back into being contenders in the North Divi-sion and postseason.
Since winning the OJHL title in 2012, the Spirit has made the postseason once, failing to win a game in the 2015 playoffs.
“I’ll be making some more moves shortly,” he said.
“I’ll add another four or five players in the next couple of weeks. There will be lots of action on our side.
“We have a good goalie in Aaron (Taylor) and I think we can take a shot at making the playoffs this year.
“Some people might not like what we’re doing (in terms of making a lot of trades), but I feel we’ll be a better team.”
Stouffville resident Justin Bennett (right) joined the Spirit from Cobourg Friday.

The BMX course that was constructed at Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area two years ago will be put to the ultimate test Sunday.
That’s when competitors will put their cycling skills to the test on the 1,000-foot course with 13 to 14 jumps when the BMX Canada Ontario Provincial Series makes its stop in Stouffville.
With the tour comprised of seven stops, the event at Bruce’s Mill is new this year and marks the fourth event this season, cited
Brendan Arnold, tour spokesperson. To start at 10 a.m. and concluding at
around 2 p.m., Arnold anticipates a number of competitive BMX competitors ranging as young as three to four years in age up to some over 50, will compete in expert, intermediate and beginner categories.
“We will see some of Canada’s best riders in attendance,” he said. “It should be a good day.”

Paul Geiger concluded his college hockey career at Clarkson University earlier this year.
But the 23-year-old Stouffville resident and former Stouffville Spirit defenceman will be continuing his on-ice exploits.
Only this time he will be doing it at a higher level in the American Hockey League as a member of the Rochester Americans, who recently signed Geiger to a one-year, one-way AHL contract.
With the Americans an affiliate of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, Geiger attended the Sabres’ Summer Development Camp, which concluded Tuesday in Buffalo.
“You go there and you learn a lot,” he said of his time at the week-long camp. “It was hard work but it was good and fun.”
Signing an Amateur Tryout with the Albany Devils of the AHL after graduating from Clark-son, Geiger made his debut with the New Jersey Devils’ affiliate March 20. He played in nine games and had one goal and one assist.
AHL experience
While Geiger had an opportunity to return to Albany for the upcoming season, he noted a Buffalo Sabres’ scout watched him play while he was at Clarkson and with Albany.
A free agent after his Amateur Tryout with Albany expired, Geiger was presented with a contract by Albany and one from Buffalo.
He selected the Sabres’ organization, pri-
marily because of the potential ice time he can receive.
“I felt I had a better opportunity with Roch-ester since they’re rebuilding at the back end,” he cited.
Geiger feels he has a bit of a head start.“The games I had in Albany definitely give
me the confidence to play at that level,” he said. “I now have a sense of the style and speed of the game and I know what to expect.”
Spirit to cLArkSon
Hoping to crack Rochester’s lineup when the AHL regular season begins, Geiger knows it’s not a given that he will make it.
“I’ll be in the mix battling for a spot,” he said. “But I’ll have to go out there and play well and earn my spot.
“The only assurance will be is that I get my chance to show them what I can do.”
During his four seasons at Clarkson where he captained the club in his junior and senior campaigns, Geiger recorded 13 goals and 38 assists in 150 contests.
In his final season at Clarkson, Geiger had five goals and eight assists.
Geiger played with the Spirit for two sea-sons starting in the 2010-11 campaign and concluded it the following season where he played an integral role in helping the club win the Ontario Junior Hockey League title.
